Bulldozer line is constructed by blading the ground and removing flammable material down to bare soil. Dozer line can vary in width from a single dozer blade to many dozer blades wide, depending on the type of vegetation burning. Dozers can cut line at a rate of one to eight miles an hour, but typically cut line from one to three miles per hour depending on terrain, vegetation and conditions. This makes them a valuable resource for California’s emergency response needs. Throughout the state CAL FIRE has multiple models of dozers including the Caterpillar D5H, D6H, D6M, D6NXL and the John Deere 750J. While the specifications for each dozer type may vary, they all include an enclosed cab for operator safety. All CAL FIRE dozers are transported via dozer transports equipped with emergency lighting for Code 3 response. MANUFACTURERS Caterpillar/John Deere SPECIFICATIONS • Air Conditioned Enclosed Cab • Brush Guard Screens • Fire Curtains • Approximate weight of 25,000-31,000 lbs • 130-165 HP • 4-Cylinder or 6-Cylinder Engine • Most have 10-foot wide blades • Equipped with rippers or winch April 2021
