Muscle and tendon strains, joint sprains and wounds are common injuries in equine athletes. Equine tissue like human tissue is highly vulnerable to repetitive stress and can be career limiting for the athlete if not treated properly the first time. Equine veterinarians across North America have discovered a medical technology that heals injuries on a cellular level, safely and effectively, without any discomfort to the animal. This new medical technology is known as the Theralase line of therapeutic medical laser systems.

The Theralase superpulsed laser system can penetrate up to 4 inches into tissue through all the hair and skin of an equine athlete to promote cellular regeneration at the source of the injury. Laser energy helps to repair damaged cells by accelerating several of the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Depending on the severity of the injury, the equine athlete can return to competition usually within a few weeks instead of many months of stall rest. This means that your equine athlete can be back to competing in a fraction of the time.

THREE CELLuLAR PATHwAYS

660 Nm - AdENOSINE TRIPHOSPHATE (ATP) PATHwAY: HEALinGTheralase stimulates the mitochondria of the cell to produce more Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP or basic cell energy) to accelerate tissue repair. (Proceedings of the National Academy of Science 2003)

Cells that lack energy are unable to participate in the healing process. Laser energy is delivered to injured cells, which are able to absorb the light and convert it into chemical energy, which is then used to accelerate tissue repair. Once cells are fully energized they are able to stimulate each other to rebuild and heal the injured area.

905 Nm - NITRIc OxIdE (NO) PATHwAY: inFLAmmATiOnindependent research proves that the proprietary Theralase 905nm superpulsed laser technology increases the production of nO by over 700%, increasing vasodilation and decreasing inflammation versus other competitive wavelengths. (Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 2009).

When tissue injury occurs, the inflammatory process is initiated to immobilize the area and prevent further damage to our body. This process is usually associated with pain caused by inflammation exerting pressure on nerve endings. In order to decrease inflammation in the particular region, the body produces Nitric Oxide (NO). Nitric Oxide has been proven to relax the vascular network, dilate the capillaries, improve vascular function, protect against cell injury and help rebalance the immune response. This process not only reduces inflammation but brings much needed oxygen and other metabolites to the injured tissue aiding in their natural healing.

905 Nm - LIPId AbSORPTION PATHwAY: PAinTheralase laser technology effectively removes the pain signal at source by rebalancing the sodium potassium pathway. (Harvard Medical School 2010)

Neurons use electrical and chemical signals to transmit information. The transmission of pain is primarily due to an expulsion of sodium ions (Na+) and an influx of potassium (K+) ions into the nerve cell across the cellular membrane, altering the electrical potential difference of the nerve cell. The peak absorption of lipids occurs in the near infrared wavelength range of 905 nm to 910 nm. Since the cellular membrane is a bilipid membrane, laser light in the 905 nm range increases the porosity of the cellular membrane. This increased cellular membrane porosity allows the reabsorption of sodium ions and the expulsion of potassium ions across the membrane rebalancing the sodium-potassium pump and removing the pain signal at source.

A STudY OF THE EFFEcTS OF LASERINg ON cHRONIc bOwEd TENdONS AT wHEATLEY HALL FARm LImITEd, cANAdAmckibbon and Paraschak, Lasers Surg med, march 1983

42 standardbred horses with chronic bowed tendon injuries received a single treatment with infrared 904 nm laser and were then evaluated for final race times, last quarter race times and class changes. A significant percent of these horses showed either similar or improved times and classes.

Conclusion: Lasering bowed tendons presents a safe and inexpensive alternative to traditional treatment methods which often require stall rest of up to 1 year.

uSE OF LASER LIgHT TO TREAT cERTAIN LESIONS IN STANdARdbREdSmckibbon and Paraschak, modern veterinary Practice, march 1984

35 Horses with check ligament injuries, 8 horses with plantar desmitis and 30 horses with pharyngeal lymphoid hyperplasia were treated using a 904 nm low level laser. The final and last quarter race times were analyzed before and after treatment. The results were significant with 60-90% of horses showing similar or faster race times and an ability to race in similar or higher classes after treatment.

Conclusion: Treatment of a variety of neuromuscular skeletal conditions using a 904 nm laser showed significantly positive results

Fourteen horses could not perform at expected standards due to chronic back pain of 4 to 48 months in duration. They did not obtain lasting improvement from other forms of therapy. They were treated by stimulating 9 acupuncture points using a low powered infrared laser (905 nm). After completing 11 treatments, performed weekly, pain was alleviated in 10 of the 14 horses. Of the ten horses who were training and competing, 4 went on to win. One year after treatment was discontinued, 9 of the 10 horses were performing at an acceptable standard for their owner .

Conclusion: Chronic back pain can be treated using laser acupuncture to achieve positive results both in the immediate and long term.
