168 YEARS OF HISTORY

• 1971: The City of Birmingham Polytechnic is created through the merger of five colleges:

– Birmingham College of Art - formed in 1843

– Birmingham School of Music – dating from 1959

– Birmingham School of Commerce – formed in the early 20th Century

– South Birmingham Technical College – established 1961

– North Birmingham Technical College – created in 1966

• 1992: The Polytechnic becomes the University of Central England in Birmingham

• 2007: The University changes its name to ‘Birmingham City University’

The Faculty of Technology, Engineeringand the Environment was formed in2009 and based at Millennium Point
