Preface: How to use this report This University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service Plant Pathology Report was produced with two objectives in mind.
• To provide a detailed report on the numbers and types of samples that were received and processed through the Extension Plant Pathology Lab (EPPL) since its inception in 1991 (Table1) and expanded information on samples received during 2001 (Tables 2-10).
• To serve as a reference for people who need to know what diseases have been
identified and reported in their particular Wyoming county. There are 10 tables in this document which are generally sorted by type of host plant and then grouped by State or Wyoming county. This will facilitate selection of the data set that best suits individual needs.

University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service Plant Pathology Laboratory Report
Plant Sample Submissions and Diagnostics for 2001
The University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service Plant Pathology Laboratory (EPPL) extends from the university campus to the field and represents UW’s Extension Plant Pathology Program. Although considerable educational effort is focused on field research, demonstration and disease recognition, and/or training plots, a significant portion of the EPPL programming effort is directed towards a fee-based diagnostic service for plant samples submitted to the EPPL. Samples for Wyoming clients are submitted by Cooperative Extension Service educators and their clients, Master Gardeners, growers, landscape professionals, crop advisors, and organizations such as the Wyoming Seed Certification Service and the Potato Certification Association of Nebraska. Once diagnosis of the sample is completed, results and/or educational information is returned to the client. This information includes practical, sample- specific, disease management recommendations. Plant samples also are submitted from surrounding states by university employees, producers, and crop advisors for diagnosis and/or assistance with recommendations for disease control. In addition, the EPPL recently started receiving “virtual samples” submitted as digital images (indicated by a “D” following the sample number). Digital images are useful tools for keying in on certain plant problems. Use of digital images promotes regionalization of diagnostic efforts among neighboring states. The number of digital images submitted has increased each year since this service became available. We processed a total of 25 digital samples in 2001. Samples are also submitted in support of various pest surveys as part of the extension programming effort. For example, a survey is being conducted in Wyoming and neighboring states to determine the effectiveness of various fungicides for Cercospora beticola, the causal agent of Cercospora leaf spot of sugar beets. The survey includes infected sugar beets recovered from growers’ fields in Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Diagnostic results are being used to limit the use of ineffective products. Survey samples submitted during 2001 are listed as numbers 20001.319 to 2001.402. Diagnostic results are also being used in support of seed certification efforts (see 2001.150 to 2001.314 and several additional EPPL samples). This report summarizes statistics of the 410 plant samples and related diagnostic results for 2001. Various statistics for prior years (1991 through 2000) are summarized in Table 1 and are available at the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Web site or the UW bulletin room (see publication #B-1111). For additional information on the Cooperative Extension Service plant pathology program, contact Gary Franc at (307) 766-2397 ([email protected]) or the Department of Plant Sciences office at (307) 766-3103.

Table 1. Extension Plant Pathology Lab Total number of samples submitted from 1991-2001. The total number of samples recorded over the period of 1991 to 2001 was 2,830. A total of 410 samples were submitted in 2001. (Note: Sample types are denoted by letters where: F = field crops; S = trees and shrubs; G = home garden and house plants; T = turf; H = commercial horticulture; O = non-plant samples and plant identification; R = research samples; P = pest survey samples)

Table 9. EPPL high plains regional Cercospora survey 2001 Cercospora Leaf Spot Survey (sample numbers 20001.319 through 2001.403) A survey is being conducted in Wyoming and neighboring states to determine fungicide sensitivity of the fungus Cercospora beticola, the causal agent of Cercospora leaf spot of sugar beet. This disease is causing economic loss in the High Plains. Therefore, surveys include infected sugar beet recovered from growers’ fields in Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Diagnostic results are being used to limit fungicide usage to those products that are most effective in each particular production area. Samples submitted during 2001 for this survey are listed as numbers 2001.319 through 2001.403. For additional information on survey results, Gary Franc, at (307) 766-2397 ([email protected]). Previous survey results were published in the Journal of Sugar Beet Research (Fungicide sensitivity characteristics of Cercospora beticola isolates recovered from the High Plains of Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, and Wyoming. 1. Benzimidazole and Triphenyltin Hydroxide. S. C. Briere, G. D. Franc, and E. D. Kerr. J. Sugar Beet Res. vol 38:111-120).
