What is Gaming?
• Gaming Technique:
Human in the loop activity applicable to simulate decision making processes;
Experts are ‘around a table’ playing different roles as they were living real processes (AOCs, Pilots, AMC, Network Manager,...);
Every role has a particular scope, objectives and strategies during the process;
Scenario running in real-time (or even slow time);
Promoting non-routine thinking, thus enabling out-of-the-box thinking.
Gaming is …

Clarification of the concept; Qualitative assessment of processes feasibility:
- detection of bottlenecks and shortcomings; Clarification on roles and responsibilities:
- E.g. gaps and overlapping; Identification of solutions to fix the showstoppers; Identification of the information flows among actors; Exploration on supporting tools requirements.

Quantitative assessment; Limitations:
- Without an adequate guidance the Gaming session may turn into an Expert Group;
- Results obtained during the game are dependant on the participants (expertise) and platform limitations.

Process Description
What-if ToolSRM
Current Situation
The What-if tool analyses the future situation in terms of complexity, safety, workload and detects a demand-capacity imbalance.
Based on that, the tool proposes its better solution à Fixed Routes
The conclusion is that for offering the capacity demanded, a transition back to fixed route structure is needed while the unusual meteorological conditions remain.

Entry/Exit Points
Parametres: - Workload: - Complexity: - Safety: - DCB: OK
Entry and Exit points are defined, as well as the directions of the flows.SRM should communicate this information to the users implied, because they are who has to decide which flow follow which direction and how to accomodate the new RBTs according to the fixed routes and the new sectorisation, if needed.

game master with the use of cards, tokens and predefined indicators (delays, extra flight time, fuel consumption,…).
The actors participation can be done through the web.

Paper based vs SW Platform based
Paper based Cheap effective mean
for definition and clarification of concept and processes;
Suitable for early stages of concept maturity;
Recommended for getting familiar with the technique;
Lays foundations for further investigations, i.e. focusing the scope of the platform-based sessions.

SW Platform based Illustration of 2020 concept
providing realism on environment, process and actors performances;
It provides indicators in real time to support the decision making;
Potential link to other techniques for performance assessment objectives (the platform stores data);
Actors behaviours models may be plugged into the platform.

Addressing the Concept Validation
Concept clarification and operational
feasibility of processes
Paper-based
• Concept layered phases: All phases can be covered by gaming (Planning and Execution
Phases). - In case of Short term and Execution phases, time pressure is a
constraint factor for decision making in the real processes. Suitable for clarification on components of the concept better
than for global concept.

Expert Groups should be combined with gaming sessions as good practice to promote non-routine thinking;
The actors should combine: - Hands-on knowledge on operational aspects ;- Detailed knowledge on SESAR concept;
Representatives from all relevant stakeholders.

Recommendations on Gaming (1/2)
• Clear definition of the scope of the gaming session;
• The degrees of freedom of roles during the gaming are constrained by the level of maturity of the topic to deal with;
• Game Master is the key driver of the game to ensure the rules and objectives accomplishment;
• Training of the actors/players on the gaming technique and tools is essential before starting the sessions;
• The execution process should be iterative: The conclusions obtained from an exercise should feed the
following one.

Recommendations on Gaming (2/2)
• Start the games just using cards to get familiar with the gaming technique by itself and the process to be analysed;
• Use the gaming paper-based for early stages of concept maturity and later gaming platform based;
• Develop actors behaviours models to be plugged into the platforms to emulate roles;
• Repeat same games with different groups of actors in order to identify potential diverse interpretations;
• Explore definition of quantitative indicators to check feasibility of processes.
