THE LAST TIME THEY MET ...

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – The Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team led the

nation’s No. 1 team, Oklahoma Wesleyan, 79-77, with 22 seconds remaining in regulation.

On the next possession, the Eagles completed a three-point play after a controversial foul

call on a made basket. OWU escaped with an 80-79 victory in the quarterfinals of the NAIA

Div. 2 national tournament.

“To have the game taken from us not 100 percent by the other team isn’t right,” EOU head

coach Ryan Looney said. “I’ve watched the game tape three times and I have come to the

conclusion that we finished our season 25-7, not 25-8.

“Our guys played that second half to the best of their ability. Their careers at Eastern should

not be remembered by those final minutes.”

The Mountaineers led by as many as seven points after trailing by as many as 10 points.

The lead went back and forth between two of the country’s best teams. The game featured

11 ties and 10 lead changes.

After trailing 43-35 at halftime, EOU opened the second half on a 12-4 run tying the game at

47.

Eastern’s Dan Stafford made a pair of free throws with 12:02 remaining in regulation to give

the Mountaineers a 60-53 lead.

The Eagles responded with a 7-0 run over the next minute.

The teams traded baskets over the final 10 minutes. OWU had its largest lead of 68-64 with

6:41 left and EOU led 77-73 just under two minutes.

Steve Briggs scored a career-high 42 points to lead Oklahoma Wesleyan (33-2). He had 25

in the first half. His eight made three pointers were two shy of a school record. He finished 8

for 19 from behind the perimeter. The junior shot 28 of the Eagles’ 60 shots from the field,

making 15.

Briggs is the tournament’s leader in scoring with 87 points in three games. Sadiel Rojas

added 14 points and nine rebounds for Oklahoma Wesleyan.

Senior Neil Fryer finished his career with a team-high 16 points to lead five double-digit

scorers for Eastern Oregon.

“The tournament was a great experience,” Fryer said. “I got the chance to play with such

great guys. The final minutes were just surreal. It’s hard to believe the four years are over.

“I’ve been proud of the guys every single day this year. They worked so hard. My career

was everything I could have asked for.”

Kris Groce had 14, Dan Stafford added 12 and Jordan Gregg finished with 11. Paul Carollo

ended his career at Eastern with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

“I think if you identify our seniors as when they got here they were tough and had the right

attitude,” Looney said. “Throughout their time here they have been able to continue that.

They will be hard to replace.

“But with success comes attention and that brings recruits.”

Oklahoma Wesleyan entered the game as the nation¹s leading rebounding team and EOU

outrebounded them 29-28.

Eastern (25-8) ends its season one win shy of tying the school record. This was the first

national quarterfinal appearance in EOU history and only the second time the school

advanced past the first round. Before last season, the Mountaineers had not made a trip to

the national tournament since the 1950’s.

Eastern Oregon was the final of the four Cascade Collegiate Conference teams in the

national tournament.
