Environmental Science (061ES)Environmental awareness has increased dramatically in recent years. New legislation

requires that industry must be aware of the role it plays in monitoring and controlling

the environment on a local and global basis. This course provides a broad

understanding of environmental science together with an awareness of the technology

required to monitor the environment.

Progression

CIT: students may progress into the first year of the Bachelor of Science in Biological

Sciences, Applied Physics and Instrumentation, Analytical and Pharmaceutical

Chemistry, and Herbal Science.

Students may also apply to a range of Higher Education Institutions through the

Module Description

The aim of this module is to enable students to develop their word processing skills on a personal computer. The student shall understand and be able to accomplish basic operations associated with creating, formatting and finishing a word processing document ready for distribution. The students shall also demonstrate their competence in utilising the more advanced features associated with word processing applications such as creating tables and tabs, manipulating pictures and images within a document, producing attractive documents to mailable standard and applying mail merge tools.

The modes of study will be theory and practical work.

Assessment:

Examination: (Theory – Based) 50%. This exam is 2 hours duration. It will examine

a range of specific learning outcomes in units 1-4.

Learner Record 25%:. Each student will keep a personal laboratory notebook. It will

include at least 5 practical investigations undertaken by the student. The lab report

will describe all stages of the experiment from set-up to analysis and conclusions. The

primary record of results/ observations will be included.

Skills Demonstration 25%: The student is observed carrying out at least 5 practical

investigations.

ASSESSMENT REGULATIONS FOR STUDENTS

General Regulations− Students must observe deadlines as notified by the college for the submission of

coursework for assessment.− Students must attest to the fact that all projects, assignments, learner records and

collections of work/ the portfolio of assessment/ portfolio work presented for assessment is their own original work.

− Where group projects have been undertaken, all students must indicate which part of the work is their own and should record each individual’s contribution to the group task.

− Students must not interfere with or damage in any way the work of other students.

Examinations/Skills Demonstrations− It is the candidate’s own responsibility to note carefully the days, hours and

locations of all exams.− Students are required to be in attendance at the exam centre prior to the

commencement of the exam.− Students will not be admitted to the exam centre after thirty minutes from the time

at which the exam began.− Students will not be allowed to leave the exam centre until 30 minutes has expired

from the time the exam began.− Students may not be allowed to leave the exam centre and return during the exam

period unless the supervisor is satisfied that the candidate’s need to leave is genuine. A candidate who leaves the exam centre shall not be re-admitted during that period unless the candidate has been in the care of a representative of the centre or in the care of the attendant during the entire period of the absence.

− The student must hand the answer book/assessment item and question paper to the supervising teacher on leaving the exam centre; the supervising teacher will record the time(s) of absence and the reason for absence.

− The time lost by the candidate will not be compensated for at the close of the exam.

− Students who leave the exam centre must surrender the exam paper/assessment item to the supervising teacher.

− A candidate should raise a hand to attract the attention of the supervising teacher during the exam.

− A candidate must enter any details required e.g. exam number/name on the paperwork accompanying a test item. The candidate’s exam number should be entered on every piece of stationery used.

- shall not write on the exam paper (except where answers are to be written on the exam paper itself) or any of the mathematical instruments allowed to be brought in

- shall not write in the answer book anything that is not directly connected with the subject matter of the questions to be answered

- shall not remove from the answer books any leaf or part of a leaf- shall not take out, or attempt to take out of the exam centre any answer books,

whether used or unused- shall not bring into the exam centre or have in their possession or under their

control, or within reach within the exam centre any book, notes or paper (except those supplied by the supervising teacher)

A student shall not, while in the exam centre- use or attempt to use, any book, memorandum, notes or paper (except the exam

paper and such answer books, etc. as shall have been supplied by the superintendent)

- aid, or attempt to obtain, aid from another student- communicate or attempt to communicate, in any way, with another student.- A student shall not damage the exam centre or its furniture, documentation or

equipment.- The use of non-programmable electronic calculators is allowed.- Students who have finished their work during the last ten minutes before the time

appointed for the conclusion of the exam should remain in their seats until the superintendent has collected the answer books/test items and they should not then leave the exam centre until the time appointed for the conclusion of the exam, unless permitted to do so by the superintendent.

- At the conclusion of the exam, students should stop writing and remain in their seats until the scripts.

- Students shall not access files on a computer or network which are not part of the exam, nor shall they access any other student’s files.

- Students shall, in all matters relating to the exam, submit to and obey the direction of the superintendent.

- Students may be expelled from the exam centre if their behaviour, in the opinion of the supervising teacher is such as to jeopardise the successful conduct of the exam. Students should note that the centre will keep on file records of any disturbances.

Penalties for Violation of RegulationsWhere the Council is of the opinion that any student has- violated any of the assessment regulations- attempted to obtain a result to which the student is not entitled- claimed or attempted to claim such a result- furnished incorrect information in relation to their candidature.- aided or attempted to aid another student, except where group work is required- obtained or attempted to obtain aid from another student, except where group

work is required.Such a student shall be liable to be
