GARBAGE COLLECTION IS TWICE A WEEK !

GARBAGE COLLECTION

Your twice-a-week collection is a level of environmental service that many communities are not offered. Keeping our community clean and beautiful is part of what makes Martin County a great place to live, work, and play. That’s why it is important to take advantage of our many environmental services.

Please refer to the Martin County MaP insert to

for garbage and yard waste.

Set out time is 7:00 a.m., or the night before is okay, too. Please remove cans and bins from the curb after collection. You can set out as many 32-gallon cans (with lids) or plastic (tied tops) bags as needed. Each can or bag can weigh up to fifty (50) pounds. Be sure to check that lids and ties are securely on containers. This helps prevents domestic and wild animals from tearing bags and upsetting containers which can create litter problems and make waste pickup more difficult.

REGULAR YARD WASTE

What is vegetative waste? Any cut limbs, palm fronds, branches, bushes, twigs, or grass clipping are considered “yard waste.” Follow the basic preparations below to help you correctly dispose of your yard waste.

Small clippingsGrass clippings, leaves and small twigs or branches must be placed in containers with lids that are no larger than 32 gallons in size or be in a biodegradable container. The clippings should not weigh more than 50 pounds lbs.

Large branches and limbsBranches, limbs and other cuttings should be stacked neatly and should not exceed six inches (6”) in diameter, five feet (5’) in length or weigh more than fifty (50) pounds. Vegetative waste piles up to eight cubic yards will be collected one time per week on Wednesdays. All piles larger than 8 cubic yards but less than 20 cubic yards will be collected within seven (7) days of your regularly scheduled yard waste collection day. Piles that are not collected on your regularly scheduled day will be “tagged” with an information card notifying you that the pile was too large and has already been scheduled for pick up. All piles greater than 20 cubic yards will be collected 20 cubic yards per week until the entire pile is removed.

Please donot use plastic bags to contain

yard waste.100% of yard

wasteis mulched at the

county landfill. Plastic bags

contaminate the mulch!

For safety reasons,

please remove refrigerator and

freezer doors before placing

outside for collection so that

children can not crawl inside and

become trapped.LAND CLEARING DEBRIS, CONTRACTOR GENERATED WASTEWhole trees as well as cut up trees larger than six inches (6”) in diameter are not part of the Residential Solid Waste Collection Program. Disposal of this material is the responsibility of the homeowner.

CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION DEBRISConstruction and Demolition (C&D) Debris is considered a Special Item and

requires additional fees and special handling by Waste Management or another licensed hauler. Residential customers can

make arrangements with Waste Management or another licensed hauler for collection and disposal services for C&D material. Homeowners also have the option of transporting their C&D debris to the landfill on their own

and paying a disposal fee at the landfill.

BULK TRASH COLLECTION - For Single Family Homes

What is bulk trash? Bulk trash, also referred to as “bulky waste” or “white goods” includes non-vegetative items which cannot be containerized, bagged or bundled. Bulk trash includes items such as broken or discarded refrigerators, ranges, toilets, washers, dryers, bath tubs, water

heaters, sinks, bicycles, and other similar appliances, household goods, and furniture. All bulky waste should be placed curbside on your regularly scheduled collection day. Bulky waste not collected will be “tagged” with an information card notifying you that it has already been scheduled for pickup. All bulky waste will be collected within five (5) days of your regularly scheduled collection day. Bulky waste does not include cars, boats, or engines. These items must be disposed of through other methods.

SINGLE STREAM RECYCLINGBeginning in October 2007, a NEW and convenient way to recycle is being offered to Martin County residents. “Single-stream” recycling lets you commingle all of your acceptable materials together in one bin. There is no longer any need to separate recyclable paper from plastics, glass, aluminum or steel containers. The convenience of Single-stream recycling makes it easier than ever for residents to participate. Through the program

we can recover up to 30 percent more recyclable materials which prevents these items from

ending up in a landfill.

Single-stream also allows us to operate our fleet more efficiently, cuts down on the number of specialized recycling collection vehicles and reduces the energy

required during the collection of the material.

“Think globally, act locally.” As a Martin County resident, one simple way you can do your part to help protect and preserve our finite natural resources is by recycling. Many of the products we purchase and use on a daily basis can find new life by being recycled into new materials.

RECYCLABLE ITEMSBelow is a list of acceptable materials as well as materials that should not be recycled because they can cause problems or hazards for workers or processing equipment. If you are uncertain about a particular item, just give us a call at 772-546-7700.

Materials NOT Accepted, include but are not limited to:

Steel Tip

A 60-watt light bulb can run for over a day on the amount

of energy saved by recycling one pound of steel. In one year in the

United States, the recycling of steel saves enough energy to heat and light 18,000,000 homes! A typical family consumes 182 gallons of pop, 29 gallons of juice, 104 gallons of milk, and 26 gallons of bottled

water a year. That’s a lot of containers – please

recycle them!

Glass Tip

Glass never wears out -- it can be recycled forever.

The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt

light bulb for four hours. It also causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less

water pollution than when a new bottle is made from raw materials. Producing glass from virgin

materials requires 30 percent more energy than from crushed, used glass.

Plastic Tip

Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour! Most of them are thrown away! Plastic bags and other plastic garbage

thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1,000,000 sea creatures every year.

If every American household recycled just one out of every ten HDPE bottles

they used, we’d keep 200 million pounds of the plastic out of

landfills every year.

Aluminum Tip

More than 50% of a new aluminum can is made from

recycled aluminum. There is no limit to the amount of times aluminum can be recycled. An aluminum can

that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now! Recycling one ton of aluminum is equivalent to not releasing 13 tons of carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) into

the air.
