August 9, 2019 Mr. Nels Strickland Assistant Director Department
of Housing University of Mississippi P.O. Box 1848 University,
Mississippi 38677 Re: Indoor Air Sampling for Mold Crosby Hall,
Stockard Hall and Martin Hall Dear Mr. Strickland:
This Indoor Air Sampling for Mold Report presents analytical
data for samples collected during
four separate sampling events conducted at Crosby Hall on July
23 and 24, 2019, Stockard
Hall on July 30, 2019, and Martin Hall on July 31, 2019. Each of
the buildings were
unoccupied. However, at Stockard Hall final construction cleanup
activities that included floor
and ceiling tile replacement, wall painting, etc. in various
were in progress on the sixth and
seventh floors owing to a serious water leak that was discovered
on the seventh floor during
June. At Martin Hall, final cleanup activities, i.e, floor
waxing and housekeeping and minor
repairs were in progress following the completion of the
installation of variable air ventilation
systems on each floor of the building. At Crosby Hall, limited
final housekeeping activities were
ongoing at various floors within the building as efforts to
ready the building for student
occupancy were underway.
METHODOLOGY
At each spore trap sampling location, a spore trap sampler
cassette was attached to an air
vacuum pump set at 15 liters per minute for a period of five
minutes yielding a filter media
sample impacted with 75 liters of sampled air. At the start of
each day of sampling, an outdoor
sample was collected so as to provide comparison of ambient
fungal species with those
identified during the indoor air sampling events. Samples were
delivered via overnight carrier
to EMLab PK Laboratories in Marlton, New Jersey. A copy of the
laboratory reports and chain
of custody documents are presented in Attachment 1.

DISCUSSION Background
The review of air sample results for fungi is generally limited
to the comparison of indoor air
sample results to outdoor air sample results; and, in many
cases, results from one area indoors
are compared with results from other areas that may exhibit
differences in air quality conditions
such as temperature and humidity and, consequently, the presence
of mold. Areas suspected
to contain high levels of fungi due to the presence of mold may
be compared to areas where
contamination is known to be absent. For the purposes of this
report, the word contaminant is
defined as any fungi discovered during the sampling process that
is indicative of active fungal
growth indoors.
Presumptive identification of captured spores on spore trap
cassettes, i.e., visual identification
through a microscope, is used to compare species of fungi in
each sample. In most
investigations, comparisons are made with samples from control
(uncontaminated) areas to
those from suspected contaminated areas. In these
investigations, if similar genera of fungi
are found in background samples from control areas as well as in
those samples from
suspected contaminated areas, then the quantity of fungal
material in the samples is compared
to determine differences. For instance, levels greater than 80%
of the control air samples
would indicate a possible amplification of the identified fungal
genus. Similarly, in these types
of investigation indoor samples are compared to outdoor samples.
If different genera are
identified indoors than those found in outdoor samples, it may
be concluded that there is a
reservoir of contamination indoors, but this conclusion also
depends on the significance of the
quantity of the measured fungal population. In areas where the
air exchange with outdoor air
is consistent, one would expect to find similar genera although
at much lower concentrations.
In the present investigation, indoor sampling was conducted to
provide a background data
base to demonstrate existing conditions prior to the occupancy
of the dormitory halls. Hence,
there were no control samples collected for comparison but
rather an evaluation of the data
among all collected samples. Nonetheless, collection of outdoor
samples was conducted as a
baseline for comparison with the indoor sampling data and it was
observed that outdoor total
spore counts far exceeded the greatest spore count observed
among any of the samples
collected indoors. Whereas outdoor concentrations were observed
at 8,500, 18,000, 23,000
and 27,000 Spores/M3, the indoor samples generally ranged from
53 to 960 Spores/M3.
Among the 215 samples collected, there were 12 samples that
ranged from 1,000 to 3,200
Spores/M3 and in three locations concentrations were observed at
4,200, 5,200 and 13,000
Spores/M3 as seen in the tabulated analytical results, above.
Although these differences in
total spore concentrations were significant from room to room,
in absolute terms they would not
be considered harmful to the general population.

RESULTS
Crosby Hall
Among 95 samples collected, the average concentration was
observed to be 313 Spores/M3
discounting the outlier concentration of 4,200 Spores/M3 that
was observed in Room 548. As
noted in Table 1, the concentration of Basidiospores (3,000
Spores/M3) was noted to be the
major contributor to the increased concentration. This genus
generally is characteristic of
outdoor fungi. A concentration of 16,000 Spores/M3 was observed
in the outdoor sample.
Though not noted during the sampling event, it may be likely
that a window was opened at the
time of sample collection. No other significant conditions were
noted in the room that would
have materially increased the concentration of spores in that
room.
Stockard Hall
Among 60 samples collected, the average concentration was
observed to be 627 Spores/M3,
discounting the outliers of 5,200 and 13,000 Spores/M3 that were
observed at rooms 819 and
606, respectively. As noted in Table 1, the concentrations of
Aspergillis (4,600 and 9,700
Spores/M3 observed in Rooms 819 and 606, respectively)
contributed to the increased
concentrations observed in these room. These genera are not
normally characteristic of
outdoor fungi. A concentration of 750 Spores/M3 was observed in
the outdoor sample.
Aspergillis is normally associated with moisture. Although no
significant conditions were noted
in the room at the time of sample collection, it may be assumed
that the presence of a source
of moisture contributed to the elevated concentration in Room
606 particularly.
Martin Hall
Among the 60 samples collected from Martin Hall, the average
concentration of all samples
was observed to be 229 Spores/M3. There were no significant
outliers among the observed
concentrations. It was noted that housekeeping activities were
nearly complete within the
building
CONCLUSION
Total concentrations of spores observed in spore trap samples
collected from the indoor
locations, in absolute terms, are low. The relatively higher
concentrations of total spores
observed in certain rooms were found to be the result of
increased concentrations of
Basidiomycetes and Aspergilllis. Both fungi are responsive to
damp conditions, however the
presence of Aspergillis is more indicative of interior
conditions as opposed to outdoor
influences found to contribute to the presence of
Basidiomycetes.
The highest observed value of Aspergillus (9,700 Spores/M3) in
terms of its absolute
concentration is not considered a health risk although it may
indicate the potential for growth
should a source of moisture be present. Concentrations ranging
from 20,000 Spores/M3 to
100,000 Spores/M3 and greater have been shown to indicate
accelerated mold growth activity

that could illicit a physical response (wheezing, stuffiness,
etc.) in the more sensitive human
population.
Based on the absence of mold on wall surfaces, it is recommended
that a thorough
housekeeping effort be conducted on the rooms exhibiting outlier
concentrations of mold.

MoldRANGE™, Local Climate; Extended Outdoor Comparison
¹EMLab Regional Climate codes are a climate classification
scheme for regional geographic areas containing multiple states.
The MoldRANGE™ Local Climate report uses the sampling location zip
code to identify the EMLab Regional Climate code in that area.
Using information available from the NOAA weather database, the
EMLab Regional Climate code sharpens the precision of the
MoldRANGE™reporting system, providing more reliable estimates of
the range and average concentrations of the different airborne
fungal spore types for each region. Additional information on the
EMLab Regional Climate code system can be found on the last page of
this report.
†The Typical Outdoor Data represents the typical outdoor spore
levels across the region's group of states for the time period and
EMLab Regional Climate code indicated. The last column represents
the frequency of occurrence. The very low, low, med, high, and very
high values represent the 10, 20, 50, 80, and 90 percentile values
of the spore type when it is detected. For example, if the
frequency of occurrence is 63% and the low value is 53, it would
mean that the given spore type is detected 63% of the time and,
when detected, 20% of the time it is present in levels above the
detection limit and below 53 spores/m3. These values are updated
periodically and if not enough data is available to make a
statistically meaningful assessment, it is indicated with a
dash.
‡ n is the sample size used to calculate the MoldRANGE™ Local
Climate data summarized in the table.
* The spores in this category are generally capable of growing
on wet building materials in addition to growing outdoors. Building
related growth is dependent upon the fungal type, moisture level,
type of material, and other factors. Cladosporium is one of the
predominant spore types worldwide and is frequently present in high
numbers. Penicillium/Aspergillus species colonize both outdoor and
indoor wet surfaces rapidly and are very easily dispersed. Other
genera are usually present in lesser numbers.
** These fungi are generally not found growing on wet building
materials. For example, the rusts and smuts are obligate plant
pathogens. However, in each group there are notable exceptions. For
example, agents of wood decay are members of the basidiomycetes and
high counts ofa single morphological type of basidiospore on an
inside sample should be considered significant.
§ Total Spores/m3 has been rounded to two significant figures to
reflect analytical precision.

Understanding EMLab Regional Climate CodesOutdoor airborne spore
concentrations are strongly influenced by climate and weather
patterns, often resulting in pronounced seasonal and diurnal cycles
(Burge 1995). The seasonal climatic changes directly affect the
growth cycle of plants, thereby influencing fungal growth, spore
maturation, and release cycles. By evaluating outdoor spore
concentrations across similar climatic zones rather than for the
state as a whole, it is possible to provide a more representative
estimate of typical outdoor spore levels and frequency of
occurrence for different airborne fungal spore types in a given
area.
The EMLab Regional Climate code system is a novel and patent
pending classification system that uses data from the NOAA -
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration database to define
unique climate zones. The following climate variables, for each
regional zip code, are obtained from NOAA and assigned a letter
code of A (above the regional average for that variable) or B
(below the regional average for that variable):
1. Annual High Temperature2. Elevation3.
Rainfall/Precipitation4. Monthly Temperature Range
The result is a 4-character code assigned to each statewide zip
code, referred to as the Regional Climate Code. Below are some
examples of decoded Regional Climate Codes:
AAAA = Above avg. Annual High Temperature, Above avg. Elevation,
Above avg. Rainfall/Precipitation, Above avg. Monthly Temperature
RangeAABB = Above avg. Annual High Temperature, Above avg.
Elevation, Below avg. Rainfall/Precipitation, Below avg. Monthly
Temperature RangeBBAA = Below avg. Annual High Temperature, Below
avg. Elevation, Above avg. Rainfall/Precipitation, Above avg.
Monthly Temperature Range
The actual outdoor air sample data from matching regional
climate codes in each group of states are then compiled in a manner
relating typical spore concentrations and frequency of
occurrence.
The data presented in this report is from the South Region which
includes the states of: AR, KS, LA, MS, OK, and TX
The NOAA regional climate variables were selected by mapping
data points from a subset of approximately 145,000 weather and
geographic database entries to over 80,000 outdoor spore trap
samples with known zip codes and assessing them using orthogonal
array experimental design techniques. The results were then
compared to the typical ranges of spore types found when grouping
zip codes using the Koppen-Geiger climatic classification system; a
commonly used climatic system that provides an objective numerical
definition in terms of climatic elements such as temperature,
rainfall, and other seasonal characteristics . The EMLab Regional
Climate codes showed improved granularity and refinement of the zip
code groupings, implying a better representation of the expected
range of spore types to be found within an individual zip code.
The values on this report were calculated by obtaining the four
variables listed above from the over 585 million data points of
weather and geographic information available in the NOAA database,
and determining the frequencies and percentile values of spore
types by utilizing over 180,000 EMLab P&K outdoor spore trap
samples with known zip codes.
This report groups regional zip codes in relation to these EMLab
Regional Climate codes and summarizes MoldRANGE™ data by month and
year within each EMLab Regional Climate code.
