2. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

2.1 THE PROJECT

The Lessee proposes a production of 153 TPA of Feldspar,61 TPA of Quartz,46 TPA of

Mica Scrap minerals over an extent of 4.87 Ha (12.05 Acres) in Sy. No. 535/P of

Gokulabrundavanam Village, Sydapuram Mandal, SPSR Nellore District of Andhra

Pradesh. The lease area is proposed to be worked by open cast manual mining and

without using any machinery.

The lease area is between 14 11' 48.9" N - 14 11' 52.2" N and 79 43' 29.7" E -79 43'

35.5" E ,The area is located at a distance of 1km from Gokulabrundavanam village and

Sydapuram 07 km from , the Mandal head quarters.

2.2 NEED FOR THE PROJECT

In order to meet the statutory requirements the lessee intends to obtain Environmental

Clearance from Statutory Authorities.

2.3 TOPOGRAPHY:

The Nellore Mica belt area is a flat terrain with minor undulations, few edges and a

number of hillocks of quartzite tending NNW-SSE. The prominent hillock of the region

is Sangam hill, Allikonda (Gaddala thippa), Utukur hil, Narasimha Konda.

A major water course in the region is river Pennar flowing from West to East bifurcating

the Nellore mica belt at Sangam. A number of village tanks are there in the region.

With respect to the subject area, it is observed that the area originally gently slope

towards North. There are no perennial water courses in and around the area. The surface

rain water flows through the slope of the area and joins the seasonal nala. There appears

to be sufficient vegetation all around, when annual variation of atomospheric temperature

recorded 18o C in winter season, 40

o C in summer months. The recorded rainfall varies

from 500 mm to 900mm. There is an agricultural land and citrus plantations adjacent to

the proposed Mining Lease area on Eastern side and Western side.

2.4 GEOLOGY

2.4.1 REGIONAL GEOLOGY:

The rock type of Nellore Mica belt has been stratigraphically grouped y Geological

Survey of India as per the sequence which is summarized below.

Alluvium

Cuddalore Sandstones

Rajmahal plant beds.

Granite : With associated veins and lenses of pegmatite and Quartz.

Granite gneiss: with inclusions of basic rocks quartz schist, chlorite schist, etc.

-- Period of Diastrophism –

Precambrins : Kandra volcanic consisting of dolerite, tuff, epidiotite, hornblend schist,

chlorite schists etc.

Schistose series consisting of quartzite, quartz schist, quartz-mica schist, Mica schist,

Biotite schist. Muscovite-Biotite schist, Hornblend schist, chlorite schist, phyllites etc.

Pegmatite and quartz veins are mostly intrusive in to schistose series of rocks along the

foliation planes or structurally weak zones. These intrusive are also subject to subsequent

structural disturbances.

Mica deposits are confined to these pegmatites and their concentrations within the

pegmatite have varied mineralogical and structural controls. Consequently, the mica

mining activity has been broadly concentrated in the following sections of the mica belt.

Gudur Zone : Around Chennur, Patragunta Village

Sydapuram Zone : Sydapuram, Thurpu pundla, Anathamadugu,

Utukur Zone : Utukur, Kalichedu, Turimerla, Jogipalli,

Chaganam villages,

Talupur Zone : Talupuru, Degapudi, Mudhigedu etc.,

Thatiparthi Zone : Thatiparthi and around.

2.4.2 LOCAL GEOLOGY:

REGIONAL STRUCTURAL FEATURES :

i) The final pegmatite solution forced its way into the inflated schists along the foliations

and along other lines of weakness and thus forms the vein quartz and pegmatite. Nellore

pegmatites are generally emplaced in mica biotite schist, hornblend schist, keynite

staurolite schist and quartzites. Pegmatite occurs adhere as mostly lensoid discordant

body with slips and fractures planes within and have wavy wall rocks i.e., schistose. This

structural phenomena many a times leads to the variable dips of the wall rocks in some of

the pegmatites.

ii) The regional trend of the schistose series of rock which occupy a major portion of the

mica belt varies between NNW-SSE and NNE-SSE with westerly dips varying from 45o

W 60o W.

iii) The trend of axis of the Nellore schistose synchlonorium is parallel to the trend of

eastern edge of the Kadapa basin. The series of number of isoclinals folds are also

interpreted to variation of strike and dip.

iv) Structural controls: The size and shape of the pegmatite bodies has got coherent

relationship with the nature of the country rock, mostly the schists. This is probably due

to the structural features that control the emplacement of pegmatites. The development

of pegmatite bodies are mostly controlled by the structural features like bedding planes,

foliations, noses, limbs of folds, slip or fracture planes.

v) Control of Mica mineralization: Mica distribution in the pegmatite bodies is controlled

generally by the factors of lithological structural and mineralogical assemblage. In

Nellore mica belt it is mostly based on structural control and mineralogical control and

out of this structural control appears to be more significant.

3.2.3 LOCAL GEOLGOY :

The proposed lease area and the contiguous area to its north and south have been through

intense mining activities for several decades and all the outcrops of pegmatites have been

worked. The strike direction of the deposit is N 61oE. With the physical ground

conditions it is clear that the shape of the pegmatite is a lensoid body. The average strike

length and width of the pegmatite appears to be 170m and 25m respectively. When under

ground workings were extended, the waste rock was dumped over and around the open

quarry, leaving intact only the ingress and egress to the mine. Due to the spread of dumps

as well as soil cover which is generally less than a meter in thickness, no outcrops are

visible in the area. The surface features have been obliterated to the extent that it is also

difficult even to infer the contacts of the pegmatites with the country rocks. The

pegmatite in this applied area has not been opened nor approachable for a study of the

pegmatite and its constituent minerals mica, quartz and feldspar at this stage. However, to

have an idea attempt has been made to collect the mica flakes samples from the existing

old dump in the applied area; therefore it is evident htat the occurrence of mica in the

water logged pegmatite body. The vermiculite occurrences in this field are generally in

the form of pockets often localized near or at contact with vein quartz in the country rock

of biotite schist. The indications in the soil covered area will be by way of admixture of

flakes of vermiculite with soil and such sections will be excavated to locate the deposit

and evaluate by drawing samples and analyzing them. The soil is reddish ferruginous

with less than a meter thickness supporting shrubs of the acacia variety.

DETAILS OF EXPLORATION:

Already carried in the Area:

There is one pegmatite is exposed in three pits in this lease area which was worked

previously by underground method of mining up to a shallow depth only. The dimension

of this pits are 15m x 15m, 45m x 25m & 25m x 15m this lease area consists of 1 m soil

thickness and followed by pegmatite. The existing mine dumps consisting of Feldspar,

Quartz, Mica scrap and schist. To find out the contents of Feldspar and Quartz in the

dumps 3 Nos of pits of 1.5m x 1.5m x 2m were excavated and the material was studied.

Page 14: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN - …environmentclearance.nic.in/writereaddata/FormB/EC/EIA_EMP/... · 4.8 Implementation of Environmental Management Plan 19 List ... -- Period of Diastrophism

Global Enviro Labs, Hyderabad 8

The marketable Feldspar having 12.5mm plus size is sorted out. It is found the dumps

contain 10% of Feldspar, 4% of Quartz and 3% of Mica scrap of marketable grade.

The volume of excavated material in the above pits is weighed and found to be 2.4 tons

per cubic meter of dumps material. After sorting out Feldspar, Quartz and Mica scrap the

bulk density of loose material is found to be 1.6 tons per cubic meter.

2.5 GEOLOGICAL RESERVES

The reserves of the pegmatite body present in the proposed lease area are not now

estimated as the mine is water logged. According to the guide lines provide by Indian

Bureau of Mines for preparation of mining plan for mica mines, it is evident that the

present position is not ripe now for an attempt on reserve estimates. This can be done in

due course after dewatering the mine and systematic geological mapping are carried out

and the different parameters properly recorded.

The reserves of the existing dumps are calculated as follows:

Pit No.1 dump: 40m length x 12.5m Avg. width x 2.5m Avg. height = 1250 m3

Pit No.2 & 3 dump: 47.5m length x 17.5m Avg. width x 2.5m Avg. height = 2078 m3

The dump near the Pit No.2 is very small and not considered.

Total volume of dumps is 1250 m3 + 2078m

3 = 3328 m

3

The Feldspar reserves are taken as 10% of the dump volume.

The Quartz reserves are taken as 4% of the dump volume.

The mica scrap reserves are taken as 3% of the dump volume

Therefore, the Feldspar reserves are 3328 m3 x 10/100-333m

3 = 833T

Therefore, the Quartz reserves are 3328 m3 x 4/100 =133m

3 = 333 T

Therefore, the Mica scrap reserves are 3328 m3 x 3/100=100m

3 = 250T

Category Mica Feldspar Quartz

Proved 250 T 833 T 333T

Vermiculite deposits are yet to be identified in the proposed mining lease area to estimate

the quality and reserves.

LIFE OF THE MINE:

Mica:250 T/46 TPA = 5.4 Years

Feldspar : 833 T/153 TPA = 5.4 Years

Quartz : 333T/61TPA =5.4 Years

2.6 MINING:

The proposed method of mining is conserving of marketable Mica scrap, Feldspar and

Quartz available in the old dumps which are 10%, 4% and 3% respectively of the dump

by opencast method. Only dump of the mine is planned during this plan period. this mine

has been in active mining for the last so many years. The present work is only re working

of old dumps, the exploration was made to find out the volume of mine dumps by pitting

the old dumps.

The dumps are dry and consolidated material due to long standing. Drilling and blasting

are not required. The material after picking marketable mineral is loaded in half ton tubs

running on rails and waste are dumped adjacent to the dump area. Pumping is not

required for dumps handling.

Picking of Feldspar and Quartz are done by hand sorting. Recovery of Mica flakes is

done by running the dump material in a tube screen of 1” mesh. As mica scrap is light

and flaky the mica scrap is retained in the tube screen.

It is planned to start the excavation from the top edges of dump by benches of 1.5m x 5m

widths and sorted out material to be stacked in the dump yard. Apart from the dump

mining the pits will be cleared by dewatering and systematic surveying will be carried out

during 2nd

year of the plan period after the entire infrastructure has been put in place.

EXTENT OF MECHANISATION: All mining operations will be conducted manually,

except ore transportation by trucks. Digging, sorting and sizing will done by manually

and also stacking and lading are all done by manually. No machineries are used. The

loading of the ore from the working face is done by manually into 10 tonnes and sent to

3. EVALUATION OF IMPACTS

3.1 INTRODUCTION

Opencast mining activity causes some adverse impacts on the surround environment

unless proper environmental management plan is adopted. Selecting suitable sites for

mining and adopting the guidelines prescribed by the Ministry of Environment & Forests

(MoEF) and Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), one can minimize the major possible

impacts.

In this chapter, an attempt has been made to quantify the possible environmental impacts

on various features such as air, water, noise, land, ecology and socio-economies. The

following aspects have been studied to identify the possible impacts while achieving the

total production of 153 TPA of Feldspar,61 TPA of Quartz, and 46 TPA of Mica Scrap

minerals .

The magnitude and significance of the environmental pollution caused by mining

depends on method of mining, scale and concentration of mining activity.

3.2 AIR ENVIRONMENT

The impacts on air environment from a mining activity depend on various factors like

production capacity, machinery involved, operations and maintenance of various

equipments and vehicle. Apart from these, there will be other activities associated viz

transportation of mineral and waste, stocking facilities and dump management within the

mine lease area that may contribute to pollution.

3.2.1 SOURCES OF DUST EMISSION

Mining is carried out by open cast Manual method with no drilling & blasting. Based on

the various operations involved in the production of minerals, the various emission

sources has been identified as given below.

a. Area sources.

b. Line sources.

Page 18: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN - …environmentclearance.nic.in/writereaddata/FormB/EC/EIA_EMP/... · 4.8 Implementation of Environmental Management Plan 19 List ... -- Period of Diastrophism

G.Bharath

Global Enviro Labs, Hyderabad 12

Extraction of mineral from mine, are considered as area sources. Transportation of

material from mining benches to various end points are considered as line sources. The

impact of above sources on air environment is discussed below:

a) Extraction & Loading

Extraction & Loading will be done manually Loading activity of mine operation is

contributing to the area source emission and the extent of influence of this operation is

about 100 m2.

b) Haulage &Transportation

In the operating mine, the excavated material form mine face to the consumers is

transported by lorries/tippers. The tippers will be well maintained so that exhaust smoke

does not contribute abnormal values of noxious gases and unburnt hydrocarbons. The

other sources of air pollution is due to the dust generated during the movement of tippers

on the haul road.

In the operating mine, the excavated material form mine face to the crusher is transported

by tippers. The tippers are well maintained so that exhaust smoke does not contribute

abnormal values of noxious gases and unburnt hydrocarbons. The other sources of air

pollution are due to the dust generated during the movement of dumpers/ tippers on the

haul road.

The above sources, which include excavation, haulage for transport of mineral will

contribute to dust pollution in the air.

The dust generated in the operating mine is that of silica sand.

3.2.2 ANTICIPATED IMPACTS

The impacts envisaged due to mining activity are evaluated based on various factors. The

emission inventory of the pollutants is as follows, the main air pollutant would be dust or

particulate matter generated by handling and transportation of ore. But the impact of

mining operations on air quality is minimum as mining involved opencast manual method

by without using drilling & blasting and as the production quantity is very less i.e. 0.51

TPD of Feldspar,0.20 TPD of Quartz, and 0.15 TPD of Mica Scrap minerals .

3.2.2.1 Dust Generation and Control

The air pollutant would be dust or particulate matter generated by handling and

transportation of ore. The maximum concentration of Particualte Matter (PM10) recorded

in Mine Lease is 30 µg/m3. The envisaged production of minerals is only 0.51 TPD of

Feldspar,0.20 TPD of Quartz, and 0.15 TPD of Mica Scrap minerals . Predicted levels of

PM10 were found to be within permissible limits. Anticipated impact is assessed by

considering increase of 10% in core zone on the PM10 levels due to the mining

operations. Predicted levels of PM10 were found to be within permissible limits. The dust

generated due to mining operations will be controlled by water sprinkling through water

tankers.

3.3 NOISE ENVIRONMENT

Noise will be produced at the mine is due to drilling, blasting, movement of vehicles and

other machinery. The noise generated by the mining activity is dissipated within a small

zone around the mine. There is no major impact of the mining activity on the vicinity

however; pronounced effect of above noise levels will felt only near the active working

area and on the personnel working in the vicinity. The impact of noise on the villages is

negligible as the villages are located far from the mine site.

3.4 WATER ENVIRONMENT

The Mining activity will be carried out on hill slope will not have any effect on the

ground water and the static water table in this area is below 15 m.

3.4.1 Impact on Surface Water

There are no major streams and rivers, which can get effected by the mining. Hence,

there will be no effect on the surface water

The rainwater drains the slopes of the area and joins to seasonal nallahs, which is running

in out side the area.

Page 20: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN - …environmentclearance.nic.in/writereaddata/FormB/EC/EIA_EMP/... · 4.8 Implementation of Environmental Management Plan 19 List ... -- Period of Diastrophism

3.4.2 Impact on Ground Water

Mining activity will be above the BWL (15m). Hence, there will be no effect on the

ground water regime.

3.4.3 Impact on Water Quality

Water quality in the buffer zone have indicted that the ground water is free form heavy

metal concentration and this mining activity will not interference on the water quality.

3.4.4 Water Consumption & Wastewater Generation

The water requirement for this proposed mining activity will be 7.0 KLD. Breakup

details are:

Sl. No: Purpose Quantity (KLD)

1 Dust suppression purpose 5.0

2 Domestic purpose 1.0

3 Greenbelt purpose 1.0

Total 7.0

There is no generation & discharge of wastewater from this mine.

3.5 LAND ENVIRONMENT

Various components of land environment have been identified for study of impact of the

mine operations. Details of the same are given below:

3.5.1 Solid Waste Generation

About 1270 TPA of Waste will be generated The total dump volume to be handled in 5

years will be 2857m3. The waste generation will be 3166 T. Taking 1.6 as loose material

bulk density (after sorting Feldspar, Quartz and Mica scrap). The volume of waste is

3166 / 1.6 = 1979 cum. The dumping sites proposed are 20m x 30m = 600m2 (near the

south eastern side boundary) and 10m x 40m = 400m2 (near south west corner) and

Page 21: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN - …environmentclearance.nic.in/writereaddata/FormB/EC/EIA_EMP/... · 4.8 Implementation of Environmental Management Plan 19 List ... -- Period of Diastrophism

therefore the total waste dumping area will be 1000m2. The height of the dump will be

maintained at 3m.

The site for stacking the sub grade material is near the South East corner of the applied

area. The area is 500m2 (50m x 10m). The dumping site and subgrade stakcing so

selected in the grazing land which will not be use for any mining activity or some other

purposes. During this plan period only 50 T sub grade quartz will be generated as the

mining is proposed for dump mining. By keeping the dump slope at 45o angle and slopes

of dumps will be stabilized with the help of boulders of waste rock.

3.5.2 Impact on Land use

The mine is located in an area of 4.87 (12.H Acres)ha. No forestland is involved. The

mining lease area is not a part of any type of forest. Most of mine lease area is non-

agricultural and sparsely vegetated, hence all the impact on land use is positive because

of high afforestation activities will be carried out by mine proponent

Due to opencast mining activities, the landscape may not gets changed. There may not be

much effect on the aesthetic environment of the lease area due to mining. The aesthetic

beauty can be maintained by proper reclamation programme. Since this is an opencast

mining proposal the land use on surface will not affect in any way.

3.6 BIOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT

There is no adverse impacts are anticipated due to the mining activity on biological

environment. However, with the implementation of the environmental management

measures, there will be improvement in the parameters of biological environment.

The tree species found with the core zone represent the common type of flora species

along with small shrubs and bushes. Due to mining activities community structure of the

vegetation will not change. Where as diversity of plant species and food web index of the

area reduced to certain extent.

However, if the proposed reclamation of the mining area and dumped out area using

proper re-vegetation techniques and development of green belt around the ultimate limit

Page 22: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN - …environmentclearance.nic.in/writereaddata/FormB/EC/EIA_EMP/... · 4.8 Implementation of Environmental Management Plan 19 List ... -- Period of Diastrophism

and roadside there shall be an improvement in the species diversity and food web index

compared to the existing level

3.7 SOCIO- ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT

3.7.1 No Rehabilitation

The mine area does not cover any habitation. Hence the mining activity does not involve

any displacement of human settlement. No public buildings, places, monuments etc. exist

within the lease area or in the vicinity. The mining operations will not disturb/ relocate

any village or need resettlement. Thus no adverse impact is anticipated.

3.7.2 Improvement in Socio Economic Status

It will be obvious to assume that the activities of the mining operations have to be

produced some improvements in the socio-economic levels in the study area.

The Lessee is providing employment to local population and it will give preference to the

local people whenever there is requirement of manpower.

The mining activities are providing employment to persons of different skills and trades.

The local population is the largest plausibility among these employees. The employment

potential ameliorated economic conditions of these families directly and provided

employment to many other families indirectly who are involved in business and service

oriented activities. This in-turn will improve the socio-economic conditions of the area.

3.7.3 Occupational Health and Safety

The mine is going to be developed mainly opencast method. No major crushing or

pulverization will be done here. The small-scale mining will not have any ill effects on

the health of labour.

Excessive dust and noise are the chief health hazards for the miners. As already

mentioned these causative factors are well within the safety limits and the proponents

will strictly implement the prescribed safety measures. The health of the workers will be

regularly checked and suitable medical facilities should be created on or close to the site.

Highest safety will be ensured in the working conditions of the miners.

4. ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN

4.1 INTRODUCTION

The mining development in the study area needs to intertwined with judicious utilization

natural resources within the limits of permissible assimilative capacity. The assimilative

capacity of the study area is the maximum amount of pollution load that can be

discharged in the environment without affecting the designated use and is governed by

dilution, dispersion and removal due to natural physio-chemical and biological processes.

The Environmental Management Plan (EMP) is required to ensure sustainable

development in the study area.

This chapter covers the genesis of pollution, the principal sources of pollution, the nature

of pollution, the proposed measures required for meeting the prevailing statutory

requirements of gaseous emissions, wastewater discharge characteristics, noise levels etc.

for environmental management purpose in connection with the mining and mining related

activities in the study area.

This section discusses the management plan for mitigation/abatement impacts and

enhancement of beneficial impacts due to mining. The Environmental Management Plan

(EMP) has been designed within the framework of various Indian legislative and

regulatory requirements on environmental and socio-economic aspects.

Environmental Management Plan giving the environmental protection measures at mine

to meet the stipulated norms of IBM/MoEF are as detailed.

4.2 AIR POLLUTION CONTROL MEASURES

The present ambient air quality measurements in the mine area are well within the limits.

Due to the proposed production of 153 TPA of Feldspar,61 TPA of Quartz,46 TPA of

Mica Scrap minerals, there will be marginal increase in dust concentrations.

Mitigative measures suggested for air pollution control are based on the baseline ambient

air quality monitoring data. From the point of view of maintenance of an acceptable

Page 24: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN - …environmentclearance.nic.in/writereaddata/FormB/EC/EIA_EMP/... · 4.8 Implementation of Environmental Management Plan 19 List ... -- Period of Diastrophism

ambient air quality in the region, it is desirable that air quality should be monitored on a

regular basis to check it vis-à-vis the standards prescribed by CPCB and in cases of non-

compliance appropriate mitigative measures shall be adopted.

The following dust prone areas are identified for adopting proper control measures in the

mine area.

i) Excavation

ii) Transportation

The environmental control measures which will be implemented to control the fugitive

dust released from the proposed production are given below:

Water sprinkling arrangements such as specially fabricated tankers mounted on

tipper are deployed at mine site to control the fugitive dust generation from the

haulage roads.

Regular grading of haul roads and service roads to clear accumulation of loose

material

Excavation operations are suspended during periods of very strong winds.

Avoiding over filling of tippers and consequent spillage on the roads

Massive afforestation for control of dust

Spraying of water on sub grade stacks

The vehicles and machinery are kept in well-maintained condition so that

emission of fugitive constituents is minimized.

Plantation of wide leaf trees, creepers, tall grass around working pit, along roads

will help suppress dust.

Tall trees with an average height of 5 m will be developed all along the boundary

of the lease area to minimize the dispersion of the dust from the mining.

Periodical monitoring of air quality to take steps to control the pollutants.

Page 25: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN - …environmentclearance.nic.in/writereaddata/FormB/EC/EIA_EMP/... · 4.8 Implementation of Environmental Management Plan 19 List ... -- Period of Diastrophism

4.2.1 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY MEASURES

All the precautions would be adopted to prevent dust generation at site and to be

dispersed into the outer environment. However, for the safety of workers at site, engaged

at strategic locations/dust generation points like drilling, loading and unloading points,

etc., dust masks would be provided. Dust masks would prevent inhalation of RSPM

thereby reducing the risk of lung diseases and other respiratory disorders. Regular health

monitoring of workers will be carried out.

4.3 NOISE POLLUTION CONTROL MEASURES

The ambient noise level monitoring is carried out in and around the proposed mine shows

that ambient noise levels are well within the stipulated limits of CPCB.

Noise generation may be for an instant, intermittent or for continuous periods, with low

to high decibels. Periodic inspection and checks of the risk prone areas and equipments

have to be conducted.

To control noise pollution during the proposed mining operations following steps will be

practiced.

The workers employed should be provided with personal hearing protection

equipment, with earmuffs and earplugs combined, as a protection from the high

noise level generated at the plant site.

The provision of green barrier along the boundary will further reduce the

propagation of noise level generated.

Limiting time exposure of workers to excessive noise.

Speed of trucks entering or leaving the mine is limited to moderate speed of 25

kmph to prevent undue noise from empty tippers.

4.4 WATER POLLUTION CONTROL MEASURES

The action program for minimizing adverse affects on water regime is to prevent wash-

off of mine water and uncontrolled run-off water during monsoon. Proposed measures for

this are as follows:

Page 26: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN - …environmentclearance.nic.in/writereaddata/FormB/EC/EIA_EMP/... · 4.8 Implementation of Environmental Management Plan 19 List ... -- Period of Diastrophism

a) Building/extending of retention/toe walls at the foot of the dumps

b) Construction of Garland drains along the slopes to divert the rainwater course

away from the dumping areas.

c) Covering of dump slopes with grass plantation to stabilize and prevent erosion.

d) Plantation of trees along the ridges and slopes.

e) Stabilization of worked out slopes by planting appropriate shrub/grass species on

the slopes to prevent material wash off.

4.5 LAND ENVIRONMENT

The Environmental Management Plan of land environment is divided into the following

three components.

a) Solid waste management

b) Reclamation of degraded areas

c) Afforestation/plantation/Greenbelt Development

4.5.1 Solid Waste Management

About 1270 TPA of Waste will be generated The total dump volume to be handled in 5

years will be 2857m3. The waste generation will be 3166 T. Taking 1.6 as loose material

bulk density (after sorting Feldspar, Quartz and Mica scrap). The volume of waste is

3166 / 1.6 = 1979 cum. The dumping sites proposed are 20m x 30m = 600m2 (near the

south eastern side boundary) and 10m x 40m = 400m2 (near south west corner) and

therefore the total waste dumping area will be 1000m2.

4.5.2 Reclamation of Mined out Areas

Land degradation is one of the major adverse impacts of opencast mining activities and

effort to control adverse impacts would be incomplete without appropriate land

reclamation strategy. Since the quarry is active with mining activity no reclamation

measures are possible in next 5 years

4.5.3 Plantation Programme:

The reserve forest area is atleast a 1 km away and has poor tree density being mainly

shrub and cactus growth. The surrounding areas are covered with Eucalyptus plantation

for the most part with localized patches for other seasonal crops. There is no tree growth

in the lease area. The programme of afforestation is as follows:

Year Extent in

Hect.

No of Plants Survival

Rate

Remarks

I year 0.18 180 80% Eucalyptus

II Year 0.18 180 80% Eucalyptus

III Year 0.18 180 80% Eucalyptus

IV Year 0.18 180 80% Eucalyptus

V Year 0.36 360 80% Eucalyptus

Total 1.08 1080 - -

A total 1080 plants will be planted and survival rate is 80%, thus finally 864 plants are

estimated to survive. The applicant proposes to afforest an area of 1.08 Ha. in the buffer

zone, along the approach. The proposed mining lease area is a patta land and no Forest is

existing. Therefore, compensatory afforestation does not arise in this case.

4.6 SOCIO ECONOMIC BENEFITS

There is positive impact on socio-economics of people living in the villages. The villages

in buffer zone depend upon agriculture. Mining operations in the subject area has positive

impact by providing direct and indirect job opportunities. There will be indirect

employment opportunities in transportation of ore to destination.

4.7 POST PROJECT MONITORIN

The Lessee will monitor the environmental parameters as per APPCB/IBM/CPCB

guidelines.

4.8 IMPLEMENTATION OF EMP & MONITORING PROGRAMME

The environment management plan is detailed on the basis of impact assessment. Control

and mitigation measures for the adverse impacts envisaged. As the major environmental

attributes have been confined to the project area alone, implementations of the proposed

control measures and monitoring thereof will be undertaken on the regional basis. The

Lessee will ensure the implementation of the measures within the mine area and carryout

efficient monitoring. In order to implement the measures suggested for mitigating the

adverse impacts on the environment, it is suggested to monitor the environmental

parameters regularly.

A detail of investments to carry out the regular monitoring and pollution control

measures is given below in table -2.

Conclusion

Based on the EMP study it is observed that there will be a marginal increase in the dust pollution,

which will be controlled by sprinkling of water and transportation of mineral in closed trucks.

There will be negligible impact on ambient environment & ecology due to mining activities, moreover

the mining operations will lead to direct and indirect employment generation in the area.

Hence, it can be summarized that the development of these mines will have a positive impact on the

socio-economics of the area and lead to overall sustainable development of the region.
