E&E Committee - 2011 Priorities

Note to reviewers: Need to define short term and long term priorities for 2011 Short term = first 4 months of 2011; Long term = balance of 2011

(1) Find a process to ensure that the Federal and Provincial governments are communicating effectively with a goal to: Harmonizing legislation between the Federal, Provincial and U.S. governments with respect to GHGs, CACs, water, waste and energy legislation. (Short term)

(2) Find a process to ensure that the Federal and Provincial governments are communicating effectively with a goal to: Managing the pace of environmental legislation changes while generating environmental improvements and maintaining industrial competitiveness. (Short term)

(3) Increase public awareness of the steel industry through the use of (i) Steel days, (ii) Environmental Performance report, (iii) other (Short term)

(4) Identify common issues, develop strategies with other industries – ISC3 Strategy Group. (Long term)

(5) Evaluate outreach options with ENGOs. (Long term)(6) Shape future climate change regulations to assure practicality and

competitiveness. (Long term)

(7) Maintain international engagement with AISI, SMA, APP (or successor) and Worldsteel to ensure consistent climate change regulations within steel producing countries. (Long term)

(8) Promote R&D collaborations between industry and governments – eg. Cdn Carbonization Research Assoc. (Long term)

(9) Ensure that domestic emission reduction requirements are equitably shared among all sources, not just industry. (Short term)

(10) Help and encourage CSPA members to improve environmental performance. (Long term)

(11) Participate in government studies to minimize multiplicity/duplication of reporting requests within/between federal and provincial governments. (Short term)

(12) Share knowledge and non-confidential information, incl. best practices among members with respect to environmental processes, technology and energy conservation. (Long term)
