Current research includes the policy dimensions of several topics, including energy policy; water resources management in the US and Mexico; socioeconomic aspects of biofuels development in the US, Sweden, and China; impact of mining on ecological systems; development and testing of sustainability indices; and the history of the management of nitrogen resources and pollution. Many faculty members are also working on solutions to climate change, analysis of the effectiveness of pollution reduction policies, and community-based risk perceptions. meeting a critical societal need Today’s environmental problems require the skills and insights of many people, including scientists, engineers, regulators, policy analysts, lay citizens, industry, and environmental groups. The Michigan Tech graduate programs in environmental and energy policy give students skills in social sciences, policy analysis, collaboration with a wide variety of groups, and understanding of socioeconomic and environmental systems. Graduates of this program become environmental policy specialists within government agencies, consulting firms, corporations, and private non- governmental organizations. Others have gone on to PhD and law degree programs at other top universities, and several have become university faculty members. The environmental policy program at Michigan Tech offers an innovative approach to environmental management through collaboration of social sciences, economics, ecology, engineering, and forest resources faculty. It is distinctive in its training in citizen participation and its interdisciplinary emphasis. The PhD program expands upon the master’s-level curriculum and uniquely combines interdisciplinarity in support of the national and international goal of sustainable development, with a strong focus on energy, as well as environmental policy problem solving. The doctoral program trains students to use the tools and approaches of multiple disciplines to solve research problems involving an integrated assessment of environmental and energy-related policy choices.
