Thanks for picking up our guide to undergraduate study 2015.

The guide provides a list of courses we offer, details on how to apply and essential financial information.

It’s also a taster of what we’re all about and gives you an insight into what it’s like to be a student at our university.

To give you an even better idea of what it’s like to study at UWS, we asked two UWS students, Catherine Campbell and Rebecca Skinner, to share their experiences of studying at UWS.

You will see this symbol in our guide – download our free UWS app (available on iTunes and Google Play) to your phone or tablet, then use it to unlock their stories (pages 6 and 24).

If you’d like a copy of our 2015 undergraduate prospectus, which has full details of our courses, contact [email protected] or call 0800 027 1000 or visit www.uws.ac.uk/undergraduate

We hope you like what you see.

University is the next exciting step towards your future.

It’s the foundation to your career and at UWS, we know what it takes to get that all important foot in the door to land your dream job.

That’s why many of our courses feature practical experience options, professional recognition, and study abroad opportunities to make your CV stand out from the crowd.

You’ll get amazing support while you’re with us, both in and out of the classroom. You’ll have the chance to stay in our modern, on campus student accommodation; access to a great range of industry-standard facilities; and an exciting social life, courtesy of our award-winning Student’s Association.

There are 4 very different (but equally brilliant) campuses to choose from – Ayr, Dumfries, Hamilton and Paisley, based in the heart of the west of Scotland – all of which are easily accessible from elsewhere in the UK.

Our courses – which are designed with business, industry and the professions – span Business; Creative & Cultural Industries; Computing; Education; Engineering; Health, Nursing & Midwifery; Science; Social Sciences and Sport & Exercise. And advanced entry is also available across many of our 100+ courses, so if you’ve already gained a college qualification – or are working towards one – you may be able to use it for entry to the second or third year of a related UWS degree. We also offer advanced entry to those with relevant A-Level or equivalent qualifications. See our Undergraduate Entry Guide 2015 for more details.

“I was apprehensive about moving to a big city as it was my first time away from home in Derry, so I chose UWS Paisley Campus. The campuses are in smaller towns, and Paisley felt like home. I really enjoy living in the town, everyone’s so friendly and I’ve got everything I need within walking distance, it’s got a real community feel.

“I’ve always had an interest in maths and physics, so civil engineering seemed like the next natural step. I’m now in the second year of my course and it’s much more intense – but if I need any extra help the lecturers are always on-hand to offer support. I chose UWS as it offered a chance to study abroad via the Erasmus programme. For me, this is a great opportunity to get to know another culture, pick up a language, meet new and interesting people, travel and all while gaining a degree qualification.

“I’m really excited about next year as I’ve just found out I’ll be studying in France.

“The course is very versatile and I’m able to work part-time, and make regular use of the gym – and Glasgow’s just a ten minute journey away, so I’ll often jump on the train to shop and socialise.

“The University facilities are great, and with an internet café and well stocked library, there’s no excuse not to get work done.”

Catherine Campbell from Derry, studying BEng Civil Engineering at UWS Paisley Campus

HANDS ON EXPERIENCE

88% of UWS students in work or further study 6 months after graduating^

We prepare our graduates to thrive in a changing world.

It’s no surprise that over one third of jobs for new graduates are taken by those who’ve already had work experience with that employer*.

Our courses offer a range of practical experience+, including placement (some of which is paid), work-based/work-related learning and practice placements, giving you the chance to develop your skills, network and build your confidence – and putting you in a great position for your first job interview.

Hands-on experience doesn’t just make you attractive to potential employers – it also gives you the chance to learn more about your chosen profession and make invaluable industry contacts for the rest of your career.

We ask leaders from business, industry and the professions to help design our courses to ensure you have the right skills and knowledge to be able to make an immediate impact in the workplace. We listen to employers when they tell us what type of graduates they want and shape our courses around this.

We regularly invite experts from industry and the professions to talk to our students about their experiences – giving you a unique insight into your chosen profession, through lectures, workshops and project work.

A vast range of UWS courses are recognised or accredited by professional bodies – giving you a competitive advantage which helps enhance your job prospects. For example, our School of Creative & Cultural Industries has some of the UK’s highest levels of accreditation from Creative Skillset, and other professional bodies such as the Broadcast Journalism Training Council, Drama UK and JAMES. And our BA (Hons) Human Resource Management is the only undergraduate course in Scotland with CIPD approval.

The UWS community is made up of students from almost 70 countries across the globe, giving the University a vibrant and multicultural feel.

At UWS, you’ll be encouraged to take full advantage of our study abroad opportunities.

You can study for 3–12 months from a choice of 21 EU countries and the US, which will broaden your horizons and give you the chance to live and study in another country.

And don’t worry if you don’t speak a foreign language – many of our EU partners teach in English, so it’s not essential to be fluent in a language.

There’s also shorter opportunities to study abroad available – for example, UWS engineering students recently spent 2 weeks in China with one of our partner institutions, on a work shadowing and cultural exchange programme.

Even if you choose not to study abroad, our aim is to give you a global outlook to your studies, preparing you to work in an international context at home or overseas, when you graduate.

You can also choose to study a foreign language – French, German or Spanish – as an option on most of our courses and use this to enhance your job prospects by adding foreign language skills to your CV. GO

Needing help or advice with careers, placement, or on finding a job while you study?

Or perhaps you’ve got a question about funding or a personal issue? All you have to do is ask – our specialist teams, based on each campus, have the answer.

The Student Link is your first port of call if you need advice. Our teams can offer advice on funding, childcare, exams and assessment, wellbeing and health, effective learning and much more.

Our Careers and Employability Service – who provide assistance both during and after your studies – can offer careers advice; help with finding part-time/vacation work, or voluntary positions; and placement support. We achieved national accreditation for the quality of our guidance, against the ‘Matrix’ standard, an external national standard for information, guidance and advice services.

Invaluable advice is also available from our award-winning Students’ Association, SAUWS – named University Students’ Association of the Year at the NUS Scotland Awards 2013 – who provide a wealth of support; offer guidance on money, study skills, housing, health, childcare and more; and campaign on your behalf.

We’ve also been commended for our support of care leavers before, during and after their time at UWS, and have been awarded the Buttle Quality Mark in recognition of this.

REBECCA’S STORY

“After studying for a Higher National Diploma at college I joined third year of the BA Contemporary Screen Acting at the new UWS Ayr Campus. It was a really intense course and during that time I grew as both a person and an actor. It also made me realise that I love being behind the camera just as much as being in front of it. The lecturers have industry experience and often bring in their contacts to share their expertise. I’ve now moved on to a postgraduate degree in Creative Media Practice; the facilities at Ayr are excellent and studios are industry-standard. The residences are stunning and I’d recommend living away from home to anyone – it helps you find your feet and makes you independent.

“Away from my studies, one of my big passions is American football; I’ve been playing since I was a kid.

“I play for the UWS Pyros squad, the team spirit is great and I really enjoy the banter!

“Ayr is set on the banks of the river, there’s lots near-by: Ailsa Craig, the beach, the town centre and of course it’s Burns territory. It’s also close to Prestwick Airport, so it’s easy to hop on a plane to Europe or further afield and it’s cheaper than some of the city airports.

“UWS is a modern university, and when people see the courses, facilities and experience on offer, I’m sure they’ll do what I did and think it’s perfect for their needs.”

Rebecca Skinner, studyingMA Creative Media Practice at UWS Ayr Campus

Named by CNN as their top travel destination in 2014, Scotland is an exciting place to be.

Scotland has more world class universities per head of population than anywhere else in the world; the highest rates of student satisfaction in quality of teaching in all of Britain; and Scotland’s graduates have the highest rate of employment or further study in the whole of the UK+.

On average, students rate learning and living in Scotland better thanin the rest of the UK and Europe*.

The thousands of students who arrive in Scotland to study find a vibrant cultural life; a country steeped in history; dramatic untouched scenery; bustling towns and cities; a world renowned education system and most important of all, a student-friendly lifestyle - if you’d like all of this and a practical and career-focused study experience, UWS is the place for you.

Our campuses are based in 4 central locations in the heart of the west of Scotland – Ayr, Dumfries, Hamilton and Paisley – offering a gateway to the best of what Scotland has to offer.

Home to our £81m Ayr Campus, and just an hours’ drive from Glasgow, Ayrshire is known for sandy beaches, world-class golf courses and of course Ayr is the birthplace of Robert Burns.

Dumfries & Galloway is a region of rugged coastlines, sandy beaches and tranquil lochs.

Paisley, Scotland’s second largest town, is just 10 minutes by train from Glasgow, Scotland’s biggest city and arguably one of the UK’s most exciting places to be.

Hamilton, Scotland’s 5th largest town, is close to some of the most scenic parts of Scotland and offers a wealth of activities, sites of historical interest and superb scenery.

And Edinburgh – Scotland’s historic yet cosmopolitan capital – is never far away.

There are excellent transport links to all of our campuses from across the UK, whether you’re travelling by road, rail or air. What are you waiting for?

Tuition feesStudents who normally live in England, Wales, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Northern Ireland will pay an annual tuition fee. For the 2013/14 academic year this was £7,250 for full-time undergraduate students. Information on our fees for 2015/16 will be available on our website soon.

Students do not normally have to pay tuition fees upfront as the fees can be paid by a non-means tested loan which you will only repay once you have left university.

You should apply to your funding body to have your fees, or a portion of your fees, paid by means of a loan/bursary depending on your eligibility.

BursariesIn 2013/14, our full fee paying undergraduate students from England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man could receive up to £6000 to help with living costs while studying at UWS*. Bursaries for 2015/16 are still to be confirmed, see website for updates.
