INTRODUCTION• Arunachal Pradesh is one of the 29 states of

the Indian territory. Located in the north-east, it borders the states of Assam & Nagaland to the south and also shares international borders with Bhutan in the west, Myanmar in the east and china in the north.

• Arunachal Pradesh is also known as the ‘Orchid state of India’ and’ the Paradise of Botanists’. It is the largest among the north-eastern states commonly known as the’ seven sisters’.

HANDICRAFTS OF ARUNACHAL

PRADESHArunachal Pradesh is a land of beautiful

handicrafts . Most of the people here have a tradition of artistic craftsmanship. The handicrafts commonly found among the people of Arunachal Pradesh are as follows :-

• Weaving• Carpet making• Wood carving• Meenakari• Channapatta toys• Ornaments• Smithy work• Pottery• Ivory work

The availability of cane and bamboo in abundance have made Arunachal Pradesh famous for its cane and bamboo works. The ruins and remains unearthed from the state prove their high skill of craftsmanship of the inhabitants of this region.

Bamboo is used in making colourful baskets, hunting weapons, hats, furniture household utensils, smoking pipes ,etc. They are also used by the tribes to construct their dwellings.

There is a common procedure for the making of any kind of bamboo or cane crafts.

• The whole stem is cut with a hacksaw and split longitudinally with a billhook

• The cane is heated on a slow fire, generally with a kerosene lamp

• After the heating is done, the bamboo is soaked in water for about 6 hours to soften.

MAKING OF BAMBOO CRAFTS...

• Then the weaving process is done by hand or some simple tools.

• Finally the items produced are cleaned with sand paper for softness and polished with varnish for shine.

• The items are then dried for about 4-5 hours and are finally ready to be used.

• Competition from machine made goods
