Geographical coverage
CATCIM will provide its services in Catalonia, Spain. Catalonia corresponds to NUTS2 level. The
reasons to consider a NUTS2 level region as the region to be covered are the Spanish
administrative organisation (Catalonia is one of the 17 Autonomous Regions); the size of the
region in terms of population, which corresponds to NUTS1 level; the number of companies
and existing networks and infrastructures; and its GDP in relation to the Spanish GDP.
Catalonia is located in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula on the Mediterranean coast, occupying
an area of 31,980 square km, with a population of 6,995,206 (in 2005), which is about 16% of
the Spanish population. The global GDP was 169.855 millions € in year 2005. The Catalan
contribution to the Spanish economy currently accounts for 19% of total Spanish GDP, with a
share of 28% and 29% of total Spanish exports and imports respectively. Catalonia has
about 605.000 companies, 74% located at the province of Barcelona and the rest at the
provinces of Girona (11%), Tarragona (9%) and Lleida (6%).
