Learning Outcome• At the end of learning process student must be able
to;
– Describe characteristic of Enterobactericeae– Describe the specific characteristic for Klebsiella,
Salmonella and Shigella– Understand the role in disease for Klebsiella,
Salmonella and Shigella.– Explain the significant laboratory diagnosis for
Klebsiella, Salmonella and Shigella identification.
Characteristic
Klebsiella
Salmonella
Shigella
Confirmatory test• Microscopy of stool samples show manu white blood cells
but few if any organism• Culture and biochemistry show no motility, no gas from
glucose and no lactose fermentation.• Serology distinguishes serotypes of all except S. sonnei.
Laboratory Diagnosis
Laboratory Diagnosis
In most laboratories a metronidazole antibiotic disc is placed at the juction of the primary and second streak of the anaerobic blood plates (78a).The plate is incubated in an anaerobic cabinet and examined at disc identifies anaerobes, and a report is issued stating ‘anaerobes present; metronidazole sensitive’ (78b).
