Did you know....research shows that kids who do not read during the summer months are more likely to fall victim to the "summer slide" — the learning loss that takes place during the long break from school. Parents say summer reading helps their child during the school year mainly because it helps keep their kid’s brain active and that reading requires constant practice. In addition, “80% of children ages 6–17 agree that summer reading will help them during the school year.” —Kids & Family Reading Report™, 6th Edition In order to ensure all of our students have this advantage, summer reading is mandatory for all students entering grades K-5. Students Entering Kindergarten or 1st Grade ● Choose at least one book from his/her grade level’s book list to read with family. They will then complete an assignment on his/her book of choice. Students Entering 2nd-5th Grades ● This year, our summer reading is attached to Accelerated Reader. Students will choose books from the appropriate grade level book list to read over the summer. During the first two weeks of school, students will take an Accelerated Reader quiz (or quizzes) on the book(s) that he/she chose for summer reading.
