Schriever AFB received a visit from Lt. Gen. Larry James Jan.
22. The 14th Air Force commander and his wife, Susan James, met
with Col. Cary Chun, 50th Space Wing com-mander and toured several
areas of the base before returning to Peterson AFB to catch a
flight to Vandenberg AFB, continuing their tour of Air Force Space
Command bases.
General James began his tour of Schriever by meeting Colonel
Chun and base leadership at the 50th SW, followed by a tour of the
new housing construction area. Mrs. James toured numerous Force
Support Squadron facilities including the Child Development Center
and the Airman and Family Readiness Center.
“I’m very proud to show the progress and improvements the base
has made since General James was here last,” said Colonel Chun.
General James was immediately impressed with the amount of
changes occurring on and around Schriever AFB since his tenure as
the 50th SW commander from April 2001 to June 2003.
“It’s amazing to drive out here and see all the housing popping
up,” General James said. “This isn’t your father’s housing either,
the Air Force is certainly taking care of its people,
providing comparable quality or better than similar housing in
the civilian sector; folks are getting the complete package
here.”
While on the tour of base housing, Ed O’Gallagher, deputy, 50th
Civil Engineer Squadron, briefed General James on the progress of
the base housing construction project.
The general then made his way to the 3rd Space Operations
Squadron, where Lt. Col. Brent McArthur, 3rd SOPS commander,
highlighted the automated procedures the squadron has
implemented via software, which has reduced the operational manning
from a 15 person crew to a five person crew over the past three
years.
Lt. Col. Erik Eliasen, 1st Space Operations Squadron Commander,
briefed the general on the new Space Based Surveillance System
being readied for launch April 30.

Welcome!
Colorado State University-Pueblo has been a strong supporter of
our military and their families as well as other non-traditional
students for over 20 years. To this end, we offer multiple Bachelor
of Science programs in Colorado Springs through evening courses at
three locations in Colorado Springs – The Citadel, Ft. Carson, and
Peterson AFB – with convenient scheduling designed around a
traditional work schedule. Our classes are conducted primarily on
an eight-week term with two terms in the spring and fall and a
separate summer term. Most of our classes are offered one night a
week, but we do offer day courses as well as weekend courses.
Weekend courses use a condensed format of one, two, or three
weekends depending on content and total credit hours of the
class.
To specifi cally address the needs of our deployed troops, or
those about to deploy, we also offer Independent study courses.
These courses consist of guided instruction with instructors
available by phone, fax, or email. Most are offered as a
traditional correspondence course; however, we have a growing
number of Internet based online courses.
A complete listing of all our courses and schedules are
available at any Colorado Springs offi ce, our Pueblo campus or
on-line at www.colostate-pueblo.edu.
We look forward to serving you in preparation for your

Commentary by Col. Cary Chun50th Space Wing commander
Today’s Air Force is the premier air and space power in the
world. To maintain this role, it is imperative that Airmen maintain
a high level of skill and preparedness. At the heart of today’s
Airman is the need for continued personal development and the
growth of our Airmen through education and training.
Fortunately, the Air Force provides all Airmen with a multitude
of opportunities to obtain higher education as part of their
continuing professional growth. The Air Force offers professional
military educa-tion courses, Air Force sponsored degrees, the
Community College of the Air Force, as well as tuition
assistance.
Along with education comes training — the two work hand-in-hand.
Education may teach us how to think and analyze problems, but
training shows us what to do. Effective training is tempered by
experience which is often handed down from Airman to Airman.
Training is also a team effort. By work-ing together, we can
produce the best-trained Airmen, who are prepared to defend our
nation. We are responsible for building our Air Force, and we need
skilled and ready Airmen to do that.
Let’s recognize that training and educa-tion aren’t just pieces
of our Air Force ca-reer that benefit us as individuals. Training
and education bind us together and serve as the foundation for all
Airmen and is key to the Air Force’s success.
Education and training: Developing Airmen today...for
tomorrow
Col. Cary Chun, 50th Space Wing commander.

“The amount of resources being invested into the expan-sion of
Schriever AFB is a true testament to the importance of the mission
here,” General James said. “The Air Force sees that and is
committed to its people and the mission.”
General James and wing leadership concluded with a tour of the
Geodesic Dome Phased Array Antenna Advanced Technology
Demonstration, housed in the large white hangar near the Colorado
Tracking Station.
Kip Turner, Air Force Research Laboratory, provided an overview
of the phased array demonstration initiative, in-cluding the new
technology and the potential improvement in capabilities and
maintenance benefits it could bring to the Air Force Satellite
Control Network.
“It’s really great to come back to Schriever AFB and see this
progress,” General James said.

Top weight lifters competed Jan. 16 to determine the stron-gest
athlete on base. In the end, Col. Cary Chun, 50th Space Wing
commander, claimed the competition title, eclipsing the field by
nearly a full percentage point.
With a successful bench press of 325 pounds, Colonel Chun lifted
50 more pounds than any other competitor, and finished the
competition with a 4.14 percent weight-to-lift ratio. Staff Sgt.
Jeremy White, 22nd Space Operations Squadron, claimed second place
among the men with a 3.63 percent total.
First Lt. Caitlyn Diffley, 2nd Space Operations Squadron, earned
the women’s title after bench pressing 125 pounds and dead lifting
215.
Competitors could start at whatever weight they thought they
could lift. Then they tried to improve by 10 pounds with each
successful lift. Capt. Jeremy Brown, 4th Space Operations Squadron,
dropped out after lifting 245 pounds and Gene Mooty, Missile
Defense Agency, cleared 255, but no more. Then Sergeant White
topped the group as he pushed 275.
As it turned out, Sergeant White’s final lift was 275 pounds.
Colonel Chun started his bench press at 300 pounds. After clearing
that weight easily he moved on to lift 315 pounds, then 325, and
attempted 330 pounds. Colonel Chun ulti-mately capped the
competition with a lift of 325 pounds.
Weighing in at 169 pounds, Colonel Chun also dead lifted 375
pounds, taking second only to 221-pound Air Force rugby player 1st
Lt. Joe Riedesel, 2nd SOPS.
Brenda Lewis, 50th Network Operations Group, took run-ner up
honors among the women thanks to a bench press of 165 pounds. First
Lt. Gary Goff, 3rd Space Operations Squadron, snagged third place
among the men, combining a dead lift of 370 pounds with a bench
press of 205.

“We wanted to show them something they hadn’t seen. The
man-to-man defense really worked to our strengths.”
Banks led 3 SOPS out of the gate, scoring on a couple of
medium-range jump shots. Along with a couple of post up hoops from

But, 4 SOPs answered with a 3-pointer and a fast break layup
from guard Christopher Dempsey. By the midway point of the first
half, 4 SOPS had come all the way back and actually took its first
lead (14-13) when Dempsey raced down court for another layup at the

That’s when Banks called for a timeout and 3 SOPS took over.

face. Make him put the ball on the floor, and force them into bad
decisions.”
Banks hit a bucket, drew a foul and sank the free throw to give
3 SOPS the lead for good at 16-14. He followed with short jump shot
and Frye drew a crowd then dished to Jay Worrell for an easy bucket
a couple of minutes later as 3 SOPS led 26-18 at halftime.
During the break, 3 SOPS players spoke mostly of defense.
“Three pointers had been killing us all season,” Frye said.
That’s what had been keeping opponents in games against us.”
Four 4 SOPS players combined to hit five 3-pointers in the first
half, but only one in the second.
Meanwhile, Frye scored 18 of his game-high 31 points in the
second half. As he dominated in the paint, Michael Kinslow found
his range from the perimeter. Kinslow’s first 3-pointer of the half
gave 3 SOPS a nine-point lead midway through and effectively sucked
the life out of any 4 SOPS rally.
“They had things go their way and we had a few unlucky bounces,
but they played a great game and closed us out,” 4 SOPS captain
Tyler Kimes said.
4 SOPS entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed, but knocked off
No. 1 seed 11th Space Warning Squadron in the semifinals, and was
hoping for a second upset in the final.
“We played well throughout the tournament, but we couldn’t quite
get into a rhythm today and shots weren’t falling for us,” Kimes
said.
Late in the half, Frye put the finishing touches on the win. He
stole an inbounds pass, stepped to his right, twisted in mid air
and shook the backboard with an authoritative slam dunk.
“He was huge,” Banks said of Frye. “We just tried to give him
space and let him do his thing. It’s a huge plus to have a guy like
that on our team.”
Following the game, 3 SOPS players donned their champion-ship
t-shirts and Col. Cary Chun, 50th Space Wing Commander, presented
them with the championship trophy.

Entering this season’s playoff basketball tournament, the 3rd
Space Operations Squadron had posted a respectable 8-3 record. The
team had one of the league’s best post players in former Air Force
Academy standout John Frye, and proven scorers at every
position.
What the team was most disappointed in was defense. But, that
all changed Jan. 23 in the Schriever Intramural Basketball
Championship against 4th SOPS.
A switch from a zone to a man-to-man scheme proved to be the key
for 3 SOPS as it clinched the league title in a 53-37 victory.
“When we played 4 SOPS during the regular season they took us to
overtime,” said 3 SOPS captain Marvin Banks.
