I ENSEM BLE I MU SIKFA BRIK I 2015/2 I SEI TE 2 I

Dear Friends of Ensemble Musikfabrik,
In our current seasonal brochure, you are going to come across many new ideas result- ing from a discourse about the past.
“As a composer, I want to express something that we as a people lost long ago,” says Toshio Hosokawa about his works. In light of this, Hosokawa remembers the traditions of his homeland through the pieces selected for his portrait CD, to be presented by the Edition Musikfabrik this Fall. Read on page 10 how he explores this cultural heritage through his compositions, looking for commonalties
between European and Japanese musical understanding and sentiment.
How much of ourselves are influenced by our genes and the unconscious beliefs passed down through generations is a question that Ensemble Musikfabrik and the Cologne Opera will get to the bottom of in April 2016. That’s when the premiere of Liza Lim’s opera “Tree of Codes” will be celebrated, taking us on a journey into the existential, reflecting on bloodlines and memory, time, erasure and illumina- tion. (Pg. 28)
With regards to his piece “Film”, which will be premiered during the 57th concert of our “Musikfabrik in WDR” series, Enno Poppe remarked: “Nothing contributes more to the standardization of sound as does the instrumentation of the ensemble.” Learn on page 24 how Poppe, along with the help of Ensemble Musikfabrik and an armada of synthesizers, will take on what he calls “the symphony of the late 20th century” and challenge the concept of ensemble composition.
We hope you enjoy discovering our projects and concerts over the upcoming months,
Your Ensemble Musikfabrik

RW Mit ihrem neuen An-

I ENSEM BLE I MU SIKFA BRIK I 2015/2 I SEI TE 20 I
akademie Musikfabrik is inviting skilled young instrumentalists between the ages of 11 and 14 to join musicians of Ensemble Musikfabrik in an Expedition
into New Music through its new workshop program.
What kind of a course is taken on such an exped- ition? The first part of the journey is an intensive exchange with the soloists of Ensemble Musikfabrik, who will teach their young instrumental col-leagues contemporary music playing techniques through individual coaching sessions. Using their own instruments, new facets of music mak- ing will be explored under the constant direction of the professional soloists, working together, step by step, to learn the basics about the preparation of contemporary music repertoire. The instrumen-tal coaching sessions provide the first contact with alternative playing techniques. Through play- ful experimentation, completely new nuances and realms of sound will be coaxed from the famil- iar instruments. Continuing on from there, the next stations on the journey are the tutti rehearsals for selected works, where newly learned tech-niques can be used and developed in chamber music formations. Short exercises in between the stations allow room for improvisation and ex- change. The newly learned skills will be shared with family and friends in a final presentation on the last day of the expedition.
Akademie Musikfabrik wants to help encourage young musicians early on to get the most out of the many possibilities of their instruments, explor- ing them with ingenuity, creativity, curiosity and most importantly, without inhibition.
The workshops are made possible through the generous support of the Annelie & Uwe-Hoffmanns Foundation and the North Rhine-Westphalian State Music Council, using funds from the Ministry of Families, Children, Youth, Culture and Sports NRW.

Jahrhunderts“ bezeichnet. In diesem Ausdruck schwingt

I ENSEM BLE I MU SIKFA BRIK I 2015/2 I SEI TE 26 I
in a text that I wrote years ago, I described compositions for ensemble as “the sympho-nies of the late 20th century.” There are two different things alluded to in the phrase: on
the one hand, the wonderful moment when a new genre is created, where everything can be im-agined and expressed in a new way; a genre that is so potent, that new groups are founded every-where in order to pursue exactly that form. The concept of ensemble composition not only brings forth new works, but also creates new ensembles and structures. A similar thing happened as symphony orchestras were formed parallel to the development of the symphony. On the other hand, this developing compositional form also contains
a standardization found in the term “symphony” as well. The longer I am involved with ensembles, the clearer it becomes to me that an epochal genre has developed that exists independently from composers, founded on the idea, structure and organizational form of the ensemble.
I am trying to look for ways to infiltrate this style in my new piece for Ensemble Musikfabrik, “Film.” The starting point questions the term ensemble. The original idea was to write 16 solos for the soloists of Ensemble Musikfabrik, pieces that could also be performed simultaneously. The idea wasn’t feasible for me, as solo pieces need an entirely different architecture and syntax than a collective does. That is, unless all the musicians play the same solo piece, either simultaneously
or offset from one another. This process of melting and coalescing, the heterophonic acceleration and deceleration will allow me to create a sound world that is both complex and simple at the same time. Not clean, but plausible.
The second step regards the question of instrumentation. Nothing contributes more to the standardization of sound as does the instrumentation of
the ensemble. Ensemble Musikfabrik, with its unparalleled curiosity, will help me to break through these norms. In addition to the usual instruments, percussion and, most importantly, virtual synthesizers will play a decisive role in the piece. By each musician receiving their own computer and being responsible for its use, the electronics will be removed from the typical hierarchy of external “sound projectionist” – which anyway has most often been used by composers as an instrument of control over conductors. Each musician will work with a local computer in combination with their normal instrument collection to create a world of sound that, while less clean and less perfect, will none-
I SEI TE 27 I 2015/2 I ENSEM BLE I MU SIKFA BRIK I
theless contain a greater vitality. The virtual synthesizers will have simulations of historical instruments (Moog, Hammond organ, etc.), and the colors of the synthesizer will be extremely enriched through the use of microintervals. Wolfgang Heiniger will undertake the develop-ment of the software programming.
A film can be about anything, anything can be a film. The images in my piece will be directly transferred into music, not shown. The dramatic composition of films is closely related to the dramatic composition of music, often very similar. Film doesn’t need to illustrate, as the images themselves are the story. Music doesn’t need to accompany, as the sounds themselves are the story. And anything that runs under an hour is a Short Film.
»A FILM CAN BE ABOUT ANYTHING, ANYTHING CAN BE A FILM.«

Im Vordergrund erzählt TRee Of

Michael Rebhahn
“An opera about bloodlines and memory, time, erasure and illumination.” This is how the Australian composer Liza Lim describes her recently finished work TRee Of COdes, in which she searches for the human essence of being, becoming and having become:
“How do the inheritances of our genes, our stories and the uncon-scious beliefs passed down through generations, shape who we are, our desires, our curses?,“ questions Lim in the introduction to the score.
This music-theatrical journey into the existential is based on an unusual work of art by the Ameri-can author Jonathan Safran Foer, the title of which Liza Lim used for her opera: TRee Of COdes is on the one hand a book, but through a special technique of omission, is also a sculptural object. Foer took a text from the Polish author Bruno Schulz - a collection of short stories pub-lished in 1934 entitled The StReet Of CROCOdiles – and cut out the majority of the words. In this manner, a cut-out was created in the truest sense of the word – a book where the deletion of words brings forth new narrative associations.
Liza Lim seizes on the idea of omission, creatively using the addition of emptiness and transpar-

ency in her composition. The subtitle of TRee Of COdes is Cut-Outs in
time, which describes a fundamen-tal element of her opera. Instead of following a linear narrative flow, the plot takes place in non-time: “during an extra day grafted on to the continuity of life.” The boundaries between the worlds of the living and dead are dissolved, the past, present and future fall into disarray, the transitions between reality and fiction become fluid. A peculiar world-between-worlds emerges: “Dead matter is animated and learns to dream, to speak, to sing...”
On the surface, TRee Of COdes tells the story of a child who views his father in complete awe, sees his rise and subsequent fall, and finds himself in the end in the very same position. At the same time however, creatures with a ahybrid shape or identity appear on the scene, most often musically represented by the double-belled brass instruments of Ensemble Musikfabrik. The stage design of the Swiss artist Massimo Furlan emphasizes this moment of simultaneity and mutability by seizing upon the style of Jonathan Safran Foer’s sculpted book: the stage is constructed out of “look-through-able” platforms upon which the singers, actors and musicians perform.
“Reality is only as thin as paper behind the screen saw dust in an empty theater,” is declared in the last act: Liza Lim’s opera TRee Of COdes is the story about the ambiguity of an assumed tangible reality and the ephemeral essence of time.

»Creating spaCe, enCOurag- ing experimeNtatiOn«
From the very beginning, the Arts Foundation of North
Rhine-Westphalia has enabled Ensemble Musikfabrik to
create and produce contemporary music. What are your
feelings when you look back on the past 25 years of this fruit-
ful cooperation?
We are immensely proud that the Foundation’s commitment
has made a significant contribution to Ensemble Musik-
fabrik becoming one of the leading soloist ensembles
in contemporary music on an international scale. The
Musikfabrik im WDR concert series, an Arts Foundation
NRW initiative, provides through the awarding of
commissions to composers a consistent and sustainable
expansion of the contemporary music repertoire. At
the same time it positions the ensemble in collaboration
with its international cooperation partners as special-
ists in world premieres whilst ensuring the presence of
Ensemble Musikfabrik in North Rhine-Westphalia.
A series of CDs released on the WERGO label, Edition
Musikfabrik , with distinctive artwork by the artist
Gerhard Richter, guarantees the international dissemin-
ation of the concert highlights. The curated concerts
that we staged in 2013 and 2014 in association with the
Düsseldorf and Berlin art academies are further illus-
trations of how successful intelligent collaborations can be.
Many of our sponsorships have in the past secured the
ensemble's presence at internationally renowned festivals.
Last but not least, the Arts Foundation NRW has enabled
Ensemble Musikfabrik to develop into an ensemble whose
scope extends into musical theatre and stage acting:
Harry Partch’s Delusion of the Fury – which received
frenzied acclaim in New York recently – and Krazy Kat
are doubtless the most convincing instances of what
Ensemble Musikfabrik can achieve today when appro-
priately funded.
The generous support by the Arts Foundation of North
Rhine-Westphalia for the Campus Musikfabrik research and
development project has provided Ensemble Musikfabrik
with the opportunity to invite promoters, academics and artists
from different disciplines to Cologne’s Mediapark. This has
already led to many inspiring encounters and been the driving
force for the generation of new works of contemporary music.
One example of how a project can develop and grow in such a
fruitful environment is the Tree of Codes opera project (p.28),
for which Liza Lim and Massimo Furlan were guests at
Campus Musikfabrik in March of this year. What is
the motivation behind your generous support for this par-
ticular project?
The Campus project, which will receive annual funding
of 250,000 Euro from the Arts Foundation NRW from
2015, provides scope for reflection and interdisciplinary
exchange. By bringing artists together, Campus Musik-
fabrik opens up a dialogue that has the potential to create
new artistic and aesthetic experiences, not only with
regard to music. The Campus concept is therefore an ideal
match for the Foundation’s approach to funding: it creates
space for and encourages experimentation in the arts. It is
vitally important to the Arts Foundation NRW that this
idea of laboratory, research and development is first and
foremost “pure” in the sense of having no specific objective.
Not everything that deserves sponsorship has to end in
a concrete project.
What are your visions for the future?
We are convinced that contemporary music – however
abstract it might be – is a place where things are negotiated
that speak about the present and concern us all. Looking
ahead, it will be essential to achieve a fundamental consen-
sus, together with sponsors, other supporters and in
association with the state and local authority, regarding
the framework in which the ensemble will work in future,
to enable it to expand and strengthen its artistic work
on an international level. Only in this way can the certain-
ty of artistic planning be achieved that is urgently
needed to secure outstanding soloists for the ensemble
in the long term. We are therefore delighted to be
involved and look forward to our continued, artistically
fruitful collaboration.
