He loo+ed *arefully round$ He had no idea at all !here the voi*e *a"e fro", (ut herather thou'ht it "ust (e so"e!here to the left of hi"$ All ri'ht, he !ould 'o
/uietly do!n the hill to the ri'ht, +eepin' to the trees if he *ould, so that they "i'ht
hide hi" a little$
He pi*+ed up his (oo+s, put his pen*il into his po*+et and stood up *autiously$ He
al"ost 0u"ped out of his s+in as the voi*e (ro+e out into *a*+les of lau'hter$ %hilip
for'ot to (e *autious and darted do!n the hillside to the shelter of a *lu"p of trees$
The lau'hter stopped suddenly$
%hilip stood under a (i' tree and listened$ His heart (eat fast$ He !ished he !as
(a*+ at the house !ith the others$ Then, 0ust a(ove his head, the voi*e spo+e a'ain$
Ho! "any ti"es have I told you to !ipe your feet
Then there *a"e a "ost unearthly s*ree*h that "ade poor %hilip drop his (oo+s in
terror$ He loo+ed up into the tree near(y, and sa! a (eautiful parrot, s*arlet and
'rey, !ith a (i' *rest on its head that it !or+ed up and do!n$ It 'a)ed at %hilip !ith
(ri'ht (la*+ eyes, its head on one side, its *urved (ea+ "a+in' a 'ratin' noise$
%hilip stared at the parrot and the parrot stared (a*+$ Then the (ird lifted up a
*la!ed foot and s*rat*hed its head very thou'htfully, still raisin' and lo!erin' its
*rest$ Then it spo+e$
6ont sni2, it said, in a *onversational tone$ Cant you shut the door, idiot .here
are your "anners
Golly said %hilip, in a"a)e"ent$ o it !as you tal+in' and shoutin' and lau'hin'
.ell you 'ave "e an a!ful fri'ht$
The parrot 'ave a "ost realisti* snee)e$ .heres your hand+er*hief it said$

holidays, havin' to !or+ at al'e(ra and 'eo'raphy and history, instead of havin' a

He li+ed the "aster, &r$ 9oy, (ut he !as (ored !ith the t!o other (oys there, !ho,
also o!in' to illness, !ere (ein' *ra""ed or *oa*hed (y &r$ 9oy$ One !as "u*h
older than %hilip, and the other !as a poor !hinin' *reature !ho !as si"ply
terri5ed of the various inse*ts and ani"als that %hilip al!ays see"ed to (e*olle*tin' or res*uin'$ The (oy !as intensely fond of all *reatures and had an
a"a)in' +na*+ of "a+in' the" trust hi"$
No! he hurried do!n the hillside, ea'er to see if another pupil had 0oined the little
holiday *olle*tion of (oys to (e *oa*hed$ If the ne! (oy o!ned the parrot, he !ould

fun than poor !hinin' Oliver$
He opened the 'arden 'ate and then stared in surprise$ A 'irl !as in the 'arden, not
a very (i' 'irl perhaps a(out eleven$ he had red hair, rather *urly, and 'reen eyes,
a fair s+in and hundreds of fre*+les$ he stared at %hilip$
Hallo, said %hilip, rather li+in' the loo+ of the 'irl, !ho !as dressed in shorts and a

(e *o"pany for one another ea*h day after tea, and !ent o2 on their o!n to'ether$
The (oys tal+ed of all the (irds and ani"als they had +no!n, and :u*y-Ann listened,stu"(lin' to +eep up !ith the" as they !al+ed$ No "atter ho! far they !al+ed, or
!hat steep hills they *li"(ed, the little 'irl follo!ed$ he did not "ean to let her
