Successful speakers

• Be yourself– Do not imitate

– Talk with the listeners, not at them

– Be informal

• Never speak without preparing– Eight steps for preparation

Preparing to speak

1. Select the subject2. Gather ideas and information3. Organize the material4. Plan the beginning5. Plan the ending6. Practice7. Control stage fright8. Present

1. Select the subject

• Pick something that YOU love

• Pick an “expert” area

• Choose a topic and BECOME knowledgeable

2. Gather ideas and information

• Left brain– Logical– Linear– Sequential– Organized – Planned

• Right brain– Creative– Artistic– Spontaneous– Intuitive– Ideas

Left brain, right brain

3. Organize the material

4. Plan the beginning

• Grab the audience’s attention– Ask a question– Give a SINCERE compliment– Tell a story– Cite amazing statistics– Read a relevant quote or passage– Display a visual– Avoid telling jokes (unless the joke is on

you!)

5. Plan the ending

• Tell the audience that you are concluding – Summarize

– Repeat the main points

– Point to the future

– Call for action

– Do not apologize

– Do not add in forgotten points

6. Practice

“Does practice make perfect?

No, PERFECT practice makes perfect!”

Sensei Luis Fernandez, 1993

6. Practice

• Practice mentally, not aloud ***

• Use note cards (power point) not a script

• Go through the whole presentation

• Do not over practice (3-6 times)

• Do not practice in front of a mirror

• Timing is everything (PPT timer)

6. Practice

• Practice ideas NOT words

• Worst choice of practice: memorization– Difficult to deliver with sincerity and

warmth

– Miss a word and stumble

• Do not read from a script– Difficult to sound convincing

7. Control stage fright

• Can be paralyzing

• Can be controlled

• You are NOT alone

• You appear more confident than you are

7. Control stage fright

• Its not about you

• Send your message to the audience– Inform

– Teach

– Inspire

– Entertain

• You are not a victim

7. Control stage fright

• Experience reduces stage fright

• Your audience wants you to succeed, not fail

• Remember: WHAT you say, not HOW you say it

7. Control stage fright

• Relaxation techniques

– Talk about it…..or not

– Breathing and stretching exercises

– Pacing

– Allow yourself to be nervous
