Common errors in performance appraisals/evaluation
ENHANCING RELIABILITYSeveral test characteristics affect reliability
Enhancing reliability
Construct items and task clearly
Sufficient number of items or task in a test
Appropriate test difficulty
Enhancing reliability
Sufficient time limits in test
Less influence of extraneous events or factors
Continue assessment until result are consistent
Enhancing reliability
Use independent raters or observers who provide similar score to the same performance (NO BIAS).
COMMON ERRORS IN PERFORMANCE APPRAISALS/EVALUATION
Leniency/generosity error
• The tendency to evaluate all people as outstanding rather than true assessments of performance.
Severity error
• Tendency to evaluate all people as poor in the assessment performance. Usually has a high standard than the others.
Central-tendency error
• The reluctance to give extreme ratings, either positive or negative.
Halo effect error
• The tendency to make inappropriate generalizations from one aspect of a person’s job performance.
Contamination effect
• Happens when Raters include nonperformance factors like race, gender, hair color, etc. into an appraisal
