WHAT IS “ASHSHIFA - 500?”

The results were amazing. The affected kidneys of the albino rats beganto function normally. “ASHSHIFA-500” has been found useful in expelling urea,creatinine, etc. that are deposited in blood due to kidney failure. Further theexperiments at the Department of Bio-Chemistry of Madras University has alsoshowed that “ASHSHIFA - 500” has no toxic effect or any other side effects by itsadministration. It is also free from heavy metals.

CONSOLIDATED REPORT OF THE RESEARCHWORK DONE ON BIOCHEMICAL STUDIES ONTHE CURATIVE EFFICACY OF ASHSHIFA - 500

(AN UNANI FORMULATION) ON RENAL FAILURE

INTRODUCTION:

Our day to day exposure to drugs and chemicals has putincreasing demands on numerous organs of the body. Within theseorgans, the response of any given cell or tissue to an insult causedby a drug or chemical or it’s metabolites is determined by theinterplay of many factors. Because the urinary system is involvedin eliminating toxic and waste substances, both drugs and chemicalsmay either generally or selectively damage the urinary system asfiltration and excretion occur. Overt nephropathy, secondary todrug or chemical exposure occurs frequently and accounts forapproximately 5% of all nephrology consultations and 20% to 30%of all cases of acute renal failure.

TREATMENT OF RENAL FAILURE:When the renal failure occurs, the more commonly adopted

treatments in recent years are 1. Dialysis and in severe cases2. Transplantation.

Since dialysis and transplantation have got their own limitationsand drawbacks, search for new medicines, which cures kidneyailments, without any side effects still continues.

ASHSHIFA - 500 (UNANI FORMULATION)

Ashshifa - 500, a coded drug by Alkausar Unani Kidney Foundation,Vaniyambadi is a combination of herbs of 18 varieties and it isclaimed to have an antinephrotoxic potency against acute andchronic renal failure.

GENTAMICIN - A POTENT NEPHROTOXICAGENT

Gentamicin has been accepted as the antibiotic of choice in thetreatment of serious pseudomonas and proteus infections. But thisaminoglycoside shares the reputation of other aminoglycosides suchas streptomycin and kanamycin for being potentially nephro &ototoxic. Rats treated with high dose gentamicin develop nonoliguricacute renal failure characterized by proximal tubular necrosis,depression of GFR and proximal tubular dysfunction.

ACUTE RENAL FAILURE:-

GENTAMICIN DOSAGEIn the present study, acute renal failure was induced transiently

in rats by administering moderate and high dosages of gentamicinto decipher the antinephrotoxic potency of Ashshifa - 500. Threedifferent concentrations of gentamicin 40mg/kg bodywt twice dailyfor 15 days, 200mg/kg bodywt for 5 days, 400mg/kg bodywt for 5days were used to induce acute renal failure.

CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE:-

ADENINE DOSAGEAnimals with chronic renal failure were prepared by feeding them

an 18% casein diet containing 0.75% adenine for 45 days. The animalswere treated with Ashshifa - 500 from 30th day till 45th day with adose of 200mg/kg bodywt thrice daily.

The effective dose of Ashshifa - 500, to treatment renal diseasehas been derived as 200mg/kg body wt.

ASSESSMENT OF UREA, CREATININE & URIC ACID:Non protein nitrogenous waste products such as urea, creatinine

and uric acid which produce the clinical manifestation of uremia inrenal failure was assessed in the blood and urine of azotemia animalsbefore and after treatment with Ashshifa - 500.

The elevated levels of uremic toxins were found to be reduced inboth the acute and chronic renal failure after treatment withAshshifa - 500, due to the increased excretion of the same inthe urine.

The effect of Ashshifa - 500, on the accumulation of the lipidperoxide induced MDA content in the renal cortex and the activitiesof the free radical scavenging system such as SOD, CAT, GST andthe content of the total GSH was studied in both acute & chronicrenal failure groups.

Significant increase in the levels of lipid peroxides and decrease inthe activities of the antioxidant enzymes observed during renal failurewas found to be partly normalised after treatment with Ashshifa - 500.

HISTOLOGICAL STUDIES OFRENAL TISSUE REGENERATION:

Histological studies were carried out on the renal cortex of acute,chronic renal failure animals and compared with their correspondingAshshifa - 500 treated groups, to confirm the curative effect ofAshshifa - 500 and its regenerative capacity towards the necrotickidney tissues.

Increased percentage of renal tissue regeneration was evident fromthe renal histology observed after treatment with Ashshifa - 500.ASSESSMENT OFPATHOPHYSIOLOGICAL ENZYMES

The activities of the pathophysiological enzymes such as LDH,SGOT, SGPT, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase, whichwould reflect the extent of tissue damage was assessed in bothserum and in the renal cortex of experimental animals.

The regeneration was also evident from the results of thepathophysiological enzymes which showed increased activities inthe renal tissues after treatment with Ashshifa - 500.

The extent of regeneration produced after treatment with Ashshifa- 500 was also assessed by measuring the activities of the iontransporting and membrane bound enzymes such as Na+ K+ ATPase,Ca2+ ATPase and Mg2+ ATPase in the tissue slices of the renal cortex.

The activities of ATPases in the kidney tissues were found to beincreased after treatment with Ashshifa - 500.

The activities of the citric acid cycle enzymes, which are used asa measure of mitochondrial membrane integrity, such as succinateDehydrogenase, Malate Dehydrogenase, NADH Dehydrogenase,Cyt- C - oxidase, Isocitrate Dehydrogenase and ααααα - KGDehydrogenase

were also assayed in both acute and chronic renal failure groups.The citric acid cycle enzymes were found to be increased

compared to the toxic groups after treatment with Ashshifa - 500.Mitochondrial structural alterations observed during renal failure

were compared with their corresponding Ashshifa - 500 treatedgroups using electron microscopy.

Mitochondrial, Iysosomal membrane disruptions with myeloidbody accumulation observed during renal failure were minimizedafter the treatment period with Ashshifa - 500.

Mitochondrial oxygen uptake and respiratory control ratio wereexamined by using biological oxygen electrode in the experimentalgroups of acute and chronic renal failure.

Ashshifa - 500 produced an increased oxygen uptake and PCRwhen compared to the corresponding toxic groups.

Protein patterns for acute renal failure groups were obtained byPoly Acrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (PAGE). Electrophoretic studiesrevealed similar distribution pattern in Ashshifa - 500 and controlgroups.

ANEAMIC CONDITION:Severity of anemia was compared among the renal failure groups.

Anemia was found to be reduced after treatment with Ashshifa - 500.The correlation between proteinuric renal diseases and the

hyperlipidemia with corresponding alterations in the lipoproteinpatterns have been studied in the chronic group. The Alternationswere brought back to near normal condition after treatment withAshshifa - 500.

The glycoprotein levels such as Hexose, hexosamine, fucose andsialic acid were estimated in the renal cortex of chronic experimentalgroups. The levels were found to be decreased during renal failure,but upon treatment with Ashshifa - 500, the decreased levels werefound to be normalised.

Inspite of that, we have made good progressin our study on the anti cancer activity of one of your compounds you kindlysupplied us through my research assistant Mr. Mohamed Ali. I have been tryingto contact you for the last few days, but unfortunately had no success. In anycase, I am sending over an update on our progress with one of your herbalextracts.

Our preliminary studies have been directed at investigating the potentialanti-cancer activity, if any, of this herbal mixture. Initial results on establishedtumor cell lines indicated that the mixture had some biological activity. Thesestudies prompted us to characterize the active ingredient, and after many cyclesof extractions and purifications we have selected one particular compound fromthe herbal mixture for futher studies. If we are lucky this compound may turnout to be a novel agent which could be mutually beneficial for both yourself andmy laboratory. However, before we embark upon our next set of investigations,I would need some more information with respect to the nature and source ofthe herbal mixture we are working with.

Coimbatore Nov 24, Bharatiyar UniversityVice-Chancellor Rev.Ignasimuthu has told aseminar that most of the allopathic drugs for bloodpressure, cancer, asthma and heart ailments arebeing prepared by using herbal medicines.

Inauguration the two-day seminar, jointlysponsored by Avinashilingam Universtiy,Coimbatore and Society of Biological ChemistIndia, in the University recently, he said the uni-versity would make use of the experience of


Vaniyambadi Dr. S. Akbar kausar giant strides in curing cancer with Kasini powder.

Avinashilingam University Chancellor Rajammal Devadas, who presided over the seminar, claimedthat kasini leaves of Dr. S. Akbar kausar had led to a green revolution in the herbal world.A recommendation was made to the Tamil Nadu government to include kasini leaves in the nutritiousmeal programme, She said.

A paper research on the divine herbal kasini was released at the seminar by Rev. Ignasimuthu,which was received by Avinashilingam University Vice-Chancellor M. Chandiramani.

Bio-Chemistry Department head S. Saroja said Kasini was capable of curing the most dreaded ofdisease. This was revealed by the patients themselves who were interviewed during a trip to vaniyambadi.A scheme, as requested by Kausar, was formulated to conduct scientific research on kasini.

The research on kasini was divided into three parts by using kasini leaves, Kasini powder and kasinicapsule. Diabetics who had been taking allopathic drugs for several years, took upto Kasini and werefound hale and healthy after a year of treatment.

The results of the research also showed that diabetes was controlled and cholesterol kept under check.Kasini Leaves were found to have a power to check heart and cancer ailments. Results are being awaitedregarding the treatment of disease of the kidney with kasini, Saroja added.

As many as 450 scientists participated in the seminar. Several scientists from reputedinstitutions submitted research papers. An exhibition on kasini leaves and other herbal medicine was also held.

The useful medicinal properties of Kasini leaves, which is discovered andintroduced by Dr. Akbar Kausar, have been lauded by Ministers in the TamilNadu Legislative Assembly. The Ministers were responding to some queriesmade by the members of the Assembly on 13.5.99.

Mr. I. Ganesan (P.M.K): Kasini leaves have been described as a divine herb.Will the Government take initiative to propogate its medicinal properties and toencourage its increased cultivation?

Hon. Minister of Agriculture Veerapandi S. Arumugam: For the time being,there is no such proposal.

Mr. I. Ganesan (P.M.K): I would like to know whether Kasini leaves, which hasbeen described a great divine herb, is being cultivated at least in the herbalgardens?

Hon. Veerapandi S. Arumugam: In Tamil Nadu the Herb and Spice Board isworking under the aid of the Central Government and its aim is to introduceand propogate the important herbs and spices.

As regards to Kasini, at present the Agricultural Research Centre at Yercaud,Agricultural college at Thillikulam and the Agricultural Univerisity at Coimbatore,are cultivating 120 kinds of herbs like Kasini, sarkkaraikolli, Aswagandhi, Avuri,Nithya kalyani and Marunthu kathiri.

Dr. S. Govindasamy, Head of the Department of Biochemistry, University ofMadras has submitted a report on his research with the aid of the CentralGovernment regarding the effects of Kasini in curing the kidney ailments. Similarlythe Ultra College of Pharmacy, affiliated to the M.G.R. Medical University hasmade researches and found that Kasini contains inulin which controls Diabetes,

tannin which purifies blood and alkaloids which controls Arthiritis. In TamilNadu the part played by Dr. Akbar Kausar in introducing the medicinal propertiesof Kasini is laudable. He makes powder, capsules and sharbath from Kasini.

This explanation may prompt the agriculturists to start profitable Kasinicultivation. According some opinion it is said to yield Rs 5 lakhs profit from oneacre cultivation of Kasini, though I am not sure of it. The members of ourAssembly can propagate this in their respective constituencies and encouragethe farmers to start Kasini cultivation.

Dr. E.S.S. Raman: (Cong.): The Kasini which has recently become famoushas been considered a money earning herb. Infact, it is something which callsfor both research and controversy. The minister has told us about the availabilityof many herbs in Yercaud. There are a lot of herbs that can be commerciallyexported. Especially I would like to point out that in our southern districts likeTuticorin Avuri worth crores of rupees have been exported. I would like toknow whether the cultivation of these herbs would be separated from theagricultural department and a separate department would be instituted to makeherbs viable for commercial export.

Hon. Speaker: You are a doctor. Instead of telling your opinion about thisKasini you are digressing to something else. The relevant question is aboutKasini.

Dr. E.S.S. Raman: The opinions like kasini would cure Diabetes, Kasiniwould cure various diseases, it is a cure for all diseases, are wrong. It is withthis intention I said that it is an issue of controversy. Such medicinal propertiescan be ascertained only after much research studies. I would like to recordhere that such things should not be given to the people through this augustassembly.

Hon. Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam: I cannot accept the member’s opinion.Because the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicines, New Delhi hasmade several researches on Kasini and has given opinions about its usefulmedicinal properties. Similarly researches have been conducted in the Universityof Madras and have found out the medicinal qualities of Kasini. In the same wayit has got recognition in the M.G.R Medical University. Similarly the UnaniMedicine section of Arignar Anna Govt Hospital for Indian medicines has preparedsharbath etc from Kasini seeds and roots which are being prescribed to curevarious diseases. So all these were based on researches which have provedthat use of Kasini is good for health. This is what Dr. Akbar Kausar has developedin a better manner in the form of powder, capsules and sharbath.

medicines given by the Siddha and Unani. But in Siddha, Unani and other Indiansystems of medicines, Kasini has been widely used.

The researches conducted by the universities have also shown that Kasinihas certain medicinal properties and it can be used to cure certain diseases.So Raman should not create a wrong impression that Kasini has no effect at all.

At this juncture Durai Murugan Hon`ble Minister for Public Works explainedhis experience as to how he was cured of his Jaundice in a day by the herbaltreatment.

Today Kidney Failure has become the common disease affecting people from all walks of life. It is more fatal thanAIDS. The patients with HIV + in their blood go on living for many years in normal conditions. But the condition ofthe Kidney failure patients deteriorates every day and eventually they succumb to death. Even the modern medicineshave failed to contain the disease. The patients have to pull on with dialysis. The only way in the Allopathictreatment is the transplantation of the affected kidney. After the transplantation. thousands of rupees have to bespent every month for the maintenance of the transplanted kidney. Even then there is the risk of rejection of thetransplanted kidney. As such there has been no sure medicine to cure the kidney failure disease in the modernMedicine.

Dr. Akbar Kausar, the Director of Al Kausar Kidney Foundation functioning at 370, Mosque St. New Town inVaniyambadi. Vellore District in Tamil Nadu, has been treating the Kidney failure patients successfully through hisherbal medicines without dialysis or transplantation of the kidneys.

“ASHIFA - 500” a coded medicine is a combination of unani herbs. The herbal combination is the result of thecontinuous research done by Dr. Akbar Kausar for the last several year. The herbal combination has beenadministered to kidney patients and has been found successful in maintaining the affected kidneys without dialysisand transplantation.

The Bio-Chemistry Department of Madras University has taken up Dr. Akbar Kausar’s“ASHIFA-500” for an elaborate research project. The albino rats which have similar human anatomical conditionshave been used for the experiments. The kidneys of the albino rats were damaged through laboratory methods andthorough blood tests and other relevant tests were conducted. Afterwards Dr. Akbar Kausar’s “ASHIFA-500” wasadministered to the albino rats. The results were amazing. The affected kidneys of the albino rats began to functionnormally.

“ASHIFA-500” has been found useful in expelling urea, creatinine, sodium, pottasium etc that are deposited inblood due to kidney failure. Further, the experiments at the Department of Bio-Chemistry of Madras Universtiy hasalso showed that “ASHIFA-500” has no toxic effect or any other side effects by its administration.

The results or the researches about “ASHIFA-500” and consequently it has given a grant to the department ofBio-Chemistry of Madras University to continue further researches on “ASHIFA-500” showing its efficacy in manag-ing kidney failure patients without painful dialysis or expensive kidney transplantation.

Dr. Kausar Who is the Editor, in Chief for Mooligai Maruthu and Daiveega Marunthu medical Monthly journalshave contributed more than 2000 medical articles on different medical subjects.

Kausar-500 is another herbal drug invented by him in his 20 years practival experience with Unani Medicine. Thiswonderful herb is useful in the de-addiction of alcohol and drugs. In 1993 this drug was taken for research and trial onAlbino rats in the Bio-Chemistry department of Universtiy fo Madras. The scientist has proved in their research thatDr. Kausar’s Kausari herb is useful in the de-addiction of fortwin injection and kidney problem.

Akbar Kausar was giventhe responsibility of translating and compiling the Encyclopedia of Unani Medicine calledKithabul Adviya comprising the herbal medicines mentioned in Urdu,Persian and ArabicLanguages for the past several centuries. A special Govt.Order was issued in this regardwhere by Dr. Hakeem S. Akbar Kausar assumed the responsibility and carried out the workmeticulously.

He worked assiduously for five years to write this magnum opus and presented copiesto the Hon’ble state Health and family Welfare Minister, Govt. of Tamil Nadu and Directorof Indian Medicines and Homoeopathy who commended the work enormously.

It is to be noted that such a voluminous and excellent work which consumed a lot oftime and energy was done by Dr. Hakeem S. Akbar Kausar without any remuneration orsalary.

It is also observed that while he was translating from Arabic, Urdu and Persian works,he came across six very rare herbs which is a boon to the commercial sex workers. Whatevermay be the nature of sex diseases of men or women, these rarely found herbs are veryuseful in treating all kinds of diseases.
