Englischunterricht für Lernerinnen mit schwierigen Voraussetzungen -
fremdsprachendidaktische und sonderpädagogische Perspektiven (für Studierende der
Sonderpädagogik) (Module 5/6) (Joachim Appel & Iris Füssenich)
Kompaktseminar: Termine (jeweils ganztägig): 01.12.06; 15.12.06; 12.01.07;
26.01.07; plus eine Nachbesprechung , Termin nach Absprache)
Das Thema Lernschwierigkeiten wird von der Fremdsprachendidaktik wenig zur Kenntnis
genommen.
statt.

Introduction to the linguistic analysis of the English language (Module 1a)
Di 17.30-19.00 (and two extended sessions 19.00-20.30 to be arranged).
Linguistics is about the description of languages. Knowledge about language and the ability to
analyse language are essential tools for the language teacher. This course aims to give
students such tools by looking at various aspects of English: sounds (phonology), forms
(morphology), sentences (syntax), meaning (semantics, pragmatics), texts (discourse analysis)
as well as language variation (sociolinguistics).

learning, learning styles and strategies, theories of language acquisition, the history of
language teaching, teaching receptive and productive skills, teaching and learning a foreign
language in primary school, teaching vocabulary and grammar, practical considerations in the
classroom (planning, evaluation, classroom management). Regular attendance and active
participation are expected.

specific features of discourse analysis, etc. A second direction of thrust will be to isolate and
analyse modal features in discourse, in particular the role played by modal verbs and their
contribution to broader categories of pragmatic interaction. Basis for the seminar will be the
following works, which participants are asked to acquire beforehand and bring to the first
session (selections from further literature on the topic will be recommended and/or distributed
in the course of the seminar):

vocabulary, idiom and grammar, comparing and contrasting them with the equivalent German
phenomena. The purpose of the course is not only to improve students´ everyday command of
the language, but also to increase their awareness of language issues in areas relevant to
teaching. Attention is also paid, in a broader sense, to selected cultural aspects of target-

Classroom Research (Module 4b, GHPO )
Do 8.15 – 9.45 (14-tägig)
This seminar provides the opportunity to gain some experience in qualitative classroom
research.
Participants, working together in groups, will observe lessons in a second grade and record it
on video. Further video data of this class are available and can be used additionally for
investigating specific issues of a theme-oriented, holistic and playful way of teaching young
learners.
Every student is expected to keep a study journal. At the end of the term the groups will
present their findings to the course.

Primary-Specific Ways of Teaching (GS) (Module 3b, GHPO neu)
Mo 10.15 – 11.45 (Group One)
Starting from the theoretical foundations of early foreign language learning and the key
principles of teaching English to young learners aged 6 to 10 this seminar will then focus on
the following methodological aspects: learning words and grammar, storytelling, acquiring
literacy, the use of hand-puppets and other teaching materials, testing and assessment and the
transition from the primary to the secondary level.
We will also be dealing with the question of how we should plan, organise, carry out and
evaluate our lessons. Reports from the students' teaching practice and video recordings will
offer valuable insights into 'real' classroom interaction that will then be analysed and
discussed. Furthermore, the sessions will involve demonstrations, discussions and
presentations in small groups.

Introduction to the Teaching of English, (Module 1c)
Mo 8.15 – 9.45
This course is designed to give an overall view of the theoretical foundations of language
learning and teaching. We will also discuss pedagogical applications and implications and
take a retrospective look at our previous foreign language learning experience. We thus hope
to increase our awareness not only of what we do and how we do it, but also what effect it
will have on our learners. The following issues will be dealt with: beliefs about teaching and
learning, learning styles and strategies, theories of language acquisition, the history of
language teaching, teaching receptive and productive skills, teaching and learning a foreign
language in primary school, teaching vocabulary and grammar, practical considerations in the
classroom (planning, evaluating, classroom management). Regular attendance and active
participation are expected.
Registration: Please sign up on the list on my notice board.
The following books are recommended as preliminary or follow-up reading to the issues dealt
with in the course:

developing your skills in pronunciation, presenting a topic, discussing or leading a discussion.
You will have the opportunity to spend some time in the multi-media lab where you can work
individually or in groups with various audio/ audio-visual materials accessed via the Internet
or from CDs and audio-/video tapes. You can tune into discussions/documentaries on a
variety of themes, which we can continue to discuss in class.
Topics will include:
• pronunciation (including use of phonetic transcriptions) with some background phonetic
and phonological theory,
• “gambits” – those useful phrases in discussion, debate and presentations which give
important signals to your listeners, introducing, linking, slanting and generally organizing
what you want to say.
You will present various topics and lead a discussion on them. In addition to regular classes,
you will have to attend some conversation classes with a native speaker. The final
examination will consist of a written (use of phonetic alphabet) and an oral test.

doing this. The following issues will be dealt with: basic principles for preparing and
delivering your presentation, outlining and putting it into words, using audiovisual aids,
criteria for evaluation, how to help pupils develop skills for giving successful presentations at
school.
Regular attendance, active participation and a presentation which will take into account what
we have learnt in the course of the seminar, are expected. The number of participants will be

Secondary-Specific Ways of Teaching (RS), Module 3b
Do 13.45 – 15.15
The course is based on a series of teacher training modules which aim to develop practical
skills in teaching English as a foreign language. The training sessions will involve
demonstrations, discussions and pair/group work. We will focus on the following areas of
methodology: planning a lesson, presenting and practising vocabulary, presenting and
practising structures, using a reading text, reading/writing/listening activities, asking
questions, giving instructions and communicative activities etc.
I would strongly recommend the students on school practice at the Realschule Korntal-
Münchingen to join this course since it will offer the opportunity to try out the principles of
teaching that we have discussed during the course. A series of articles offering theoretical and
practical background knowledge will be presented and discussed in small groups on a weekly
basis (continuous assessment). There will also be an end-of-term test.
Registration: Please sign up on the list on my notice board.

Contemporary British literature in the classroom – a project-based workshop.
Mi 10.15-11.45
Fifteen-year-old Christopher has a photographic memory. He understands maths. He
understands science. What he can’t understand are other human beings. When he finds his
neighbour’s dog lying dead on the lawn, he decides to track down the killer and write a

The course objective is to learn how to make the challenge of reading authentic literature
accessible and motivating for learners, how to arouse their interest, how to engage their
minds, interests and feelings and how to help them to experience the story from the inside out,
not from the outside looking in. We will read the novel during the course and try out various
processes and approaches related to teaching literature for adolescents.
Students must have the following book by the beginning of term and bring it with them to the

valuable insights into ‘real’ classroom interaction that will then be analysed and discussed.
Furthermore, demonstrations of short teaching units on specific topics will help students to
gain a clearer understanding of their own implicit assumptions and their teaching strategies.
