    module you will learn how to decode words with suffixes.

    This module will help you form new words by adding the accurate suffixes. Suffixes give clues to the meaning of words.

    Suffixes

    A suffix is a word part added to the end of a word to change its meaning.

    -istA noun-forming suffix, -ist means a person who makes, does, or practices.

    -lessAn adjective-forming suffix, -less means without or lacking.

    -nessA noun-forming suffix, -ness means state or quality of being.

    -lyAn adverb- or adjective-forming suffix, -ly means when, how, like, or in the manner of.

    -fyA verb forming suffix, -fy means to make or cause to be

    or become.

    -izeA verb-formingsuffix, -izemeans tocause tobe or tobecome.

    Read the passage carefully.

    The treasure must be in here! yelled Brad. He and his sisterLauren stood outside the entrance of a cave. As Brad took a steptowards the darkness, Lauren touched his arm.

    Lets rest a bit, said Lauren, still breathless from running.Besides, it might be dangerous in there.

    Brad held up a tattered notebook that had Abigail etched faintlyon its cover. This diary we found says Abigail hid a treasure in here,he said. I want to find it before anyone else does. Brad turned andstepped inside the cave with determination. Lauren sighed andreluctantly followed her brother.

    Brad waved his flashlight impatiently around the cave. Momentslater, he cried, I see something! Brad stooped down and starteddigging in the earth with a rock. Lauren came to help. Soon the twouncovered a small wooden box. Brads hands shook withexcitement.

  • He took the box outside and opened it. Brad and Lauren gasped andlooked at the contents in astonishment. Inside were lettersaddressed to Abigail.

    Nothing but letters! moaned Brad with disappointment.Theres no treasure here at all. He sank to the ground feeling tiredand a bit foolish.

    Lauren stood with a thoughtful look on her face. If its anyconsolidation, she said slowly, we did find Abigails treasure.Lauren fingered the letters gently and continued, These letterswere written by someone whose friendship Abigail felt very stronglyabout. She probably put the letters in the cave for safekeeping.

    Some suffixes that change base words to adjectives are:

    admirable-ish characteristics of selfish, boyish, greenish, childish
