Regional Association V for the South-West Pacific is one of six Regional Association of the

World Meteorological Organization (WMO). lt is one of the largest Regions in area, crossing both

the dateline and the equ"1or. Cook lslands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Niue, Tonga and

Samoa became Members of WMO over the last fevv years, increasing the Membership of the

2003) adopted resolution "A/REs/58/232-Agreement between the United Nations and the WorldTourism Organization" concerning transformation of the World Tourism Organization (WTO), anintergovernmental body, into a specialized agency of the United Nations.

As you are aware, weather, climate and water relate closely to human activities, includingtourism. ln this context, the Executive Council at its forty-fourth session in 1g92 establishedformal Working Arrangements with the World Tourism Organization. Since then, cooperationbetween the two Organizations was stregthened.ln the last decade,WMO has undertaken a numberof activities pertinent to tourism, including technical studies by team of experts, and publicationof their work in WMO reports. In addition, WMO co-sponsored several WTO meetings such as theFirst lnternational Conference on Climate Change and Tourism in April2003 in Tunisia.

Tourism is today one of the major industrial sectors in the world. In many countries, especiallyon tropical islands, tourism is the dominant industry. Most activities related to tourism andrecreation depends on weather and climate. The National Meteorological and HydrologicalServices (NMHSs) have been playing and will continue to play an eslential role in support of thetourism industry. In this connection, you may consider establishing or stengthening coilaborationwith the National Tourism Authority and other travel agencies concerned for furthei enhancingcooperation under the umbrella of the Working Arrangements between the two Organizations.
