Critical Perspectives #1: Reader-Response
Usually, when we read a text, we either read for enjoyment or because we have to.
In both cases, however, when we read, the main question we are asked, or ask ourselves is, “What did you think about it?”
However, there are many ways to read a text. These are called critical perspectives, or
critical lenses. One such example is the reader-response
lens.
Critical Perspectives #1: Reader-Response
This lens studies the way in which a reader interacts with the text.
People who believe in this perspective will say that a text is incomplete until it is read.
With this lens, the question of “What did you think about it?” is very important.
However, the question of what might others think about it is equally as important.
Our perspectives are influenced by our friends, family, culture, experiences, etc.
Today, we saw that the same text can have very different meanings for different people.
