Engineers Week (February 16-22, 2020) is a national, annual celebration of how engineers make a difference in our world, with goals to increase public dialogue about the need for engineers and to bring engineering to life for students, educators, and parents. This year, WVU’s Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources is sponsoring a design competition for West Virginia elementary school students. A state winner will be selected from each grade level. ENGINEERS WEEK 2020 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROBLEM SOLVING COMPETITION Problem Solving Prompt (Kindergarten-5th Grade) The 2020 Engineers Week theme is Pioneers of Progress. Think about a challenge that West Virginia will face in the next ten years. State the problem, research the problem, then design and draw a device or process that will solve this challenge to make West Virginia a better place. Include a technical drawing with all parts labeled and a detailed description that communicates the idea behind your engineering design/ solution. Make sure to do your research and think outside the box! Criteria •Must be a student in West Virginia in Kindergarten-5th grade (public school, private school, or home schooled). •Must include labeled drawing and description of solution. •Designs will be judged on creativity, problem solving technique, and explanation of solution. •To be eligible for judging, students must complete attached information form with submission. •Sources must be cited.
