CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT
Engineering Properties and
Structure Division Newsletter December
2018
Dear EPSDIV Members,
EPSDIV kicked off the 2018-
2019 strongly by reorganizing our activities under six committees. In addition to the
Technical Program Committee (TPC), we now have the
f o l l ow ing commi t t ee s : Outreach, Knowledge Sharing, Communications, Awards, and
Finance. By channeling our efforts on these top focus
areas, we are building and expanding on our technical
programming, networking beyond SPE, and are overall very enthusiastic about the
future of EPSDIV.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our membership and board
members for their dedication and commitment to EPSDIV.
Our newest board members, Duane Simonson (Research Support Instruments), Sean
Teller (Veryst Engineering), Mohammad Hossain (Texas
A&M – Kingsville), and Ying Shi (A. Shulman) have all brought in fresh perspectives,
and reinvigorated our division.
Duane plays an active role in
our Outreach Committee, and has been networking with
o t h e r p r o f e s s i o n a l organizations. while Sean is in our Finance committee, and is
also our treasurer-elect for
the 2019-2020 term.
Our TPCs Mohammad Hossain and Ying Shi have been
putting together our Antec 2019 program. We have an
exciting program with several invited speakers in store for you at the upcoming Antec,
which will be held in Detroit,
MI on March 18-21.
We are always looking for dedicated volunteers to join
the EPSDIV board. Our elections are coming up in
January, and I encourage our membership to consider taking an active role in our
board. Please reach out to one of our board members
with your interest, and look for the election ballots in our
January newsletter.
With the Thanksgiving behind as, and Christmas approach-
ing fast, I would also like to wish each of you Happy
As November rolls by, and the year’s end is almost here, I find myself in a
reflective stage, as I am sure many of you do, of looking back with satisfaction at what was achieved this year, and for the pending activities and new ideas
with the promise of a fresh start next year.
In 2018 we welcomed several new members to the EPSDIV board, and we continue to look for young professionals to join the board. Not forgetting the
more seasoned EPSDIV board members who have helped the new arrivals learn the ropes. Mentoring services are also being offered through SPE. Members can sign up as mentors, mentees or both, and avail of the vast knowledge base and
experience of the Society’s plastics professionals. In the Fall SPE Council meeting we also discussed ways to effectively bring incoming board members up to speed by leveraging best
practices and providing coaching. A good information source is the SPE online library which
houses among the listed >14,000 items, leadership resources as well as technical information.
This year the annual SPE technology conference, ANTEC, was held in conjunction with the NPE
trade show at Orlando, Florida. Overall, drawing from the benefits, and not limited by the unique challenges of co-hosted events, SPE had a very successful ANTEC conference with 550+
technical and business papers, 60+ marketing presentations, and various recognition, networking, and student promotion events. In keeping with past years, EPSDIV held several technical seminar sessions at ANTEC. EPSDIV’s very own Dr. Rajen Patel was awarded the
prestigious annual SPE Research and Engineering Technology Award. This year also saw a continued commitment to inclusion and diversity through venues such as the Women’s
Connection Breakfast, and the young professionals and student’s Crosslink Your Network session at ANTEC. The 2018 induction of Donna Davis into the Plastics Hall of Fame, only the
third women to receive this honor, serves as an inspiration not only to women but to plastics
professionals everywhere.
Going forward the plastics industry faces new challenges, and thereby opportunities, in the
sustainability arena. As the current discussion around plastics use, re-use, disposal and replacement ramps up, a coordinated effort from each and every member of the value chain,
from producers to legislators to consumers, is needed to define a successful path forward.
Above all a committed effort firmly grounded in education and innovation.
Throughout the year, the EPSDIV board members have discussed, debated and developed new
ideas to provide value to their members. As EPSDIV touches a multitude of plastics industry aspects, being at the crossroads of material structure-property-performance relationship, the
division is in a unique position to host events addressing diverse elements of the plastics industry value chain. Such events could be in the form of information exchange sessions around market mega trends and technology innovations, technical training sessions, or career events
at educational institutes. Joining forces with complementary SPE Divisions and Sections can further enhance the attendee experience. Next year the resolve is to turn these ideas into
actionable reality.
Thank you to all volunteers who give their precious time to educate, inform and promote the
plastics industry.
My best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season.
