What is Electrical Engineering?Electrical Engineering — also called electrical and electronic

engineering deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics

and electromagnetism to design, build, test, and operate electrical devices and systems.

It includes planning, design, development, evaluation, measurement and operation of electrical principles, models and systems. Electricity: generation, transmission & distribution of Electrical energy Electronics: Information Technology & Electronic Control Electromagnetism: applied in both Electricity & Electronics

Electrical Engineers use electrical science developed over past hundreds of years to design, improve, manufacture, sell, install, manage and maintain electrical components, devices, instruments, and systems. The profession is extremely dynamic with new technologies constantly emerging, which profoundly affect our lives.

Electrical engineers are responsible for the design and development of radio and television transmitter and receiver, telephone networks and switching systems, computer systems and networks, electric power generation and distribution. Within the broad scope of these systems, the electrical engineer is concerned with a challenging and diverse array of design and developments.

The engineer, and especially the electrical engineer, has been on the cutting edge of this progress since the industrial revolution. New revolutions are happening in our lifetime. Digital technology based on the development, by electrical engineers, of extremely powerful and novel semiconductor devices is even today changing the fabric of our lives.

The department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is one of the largest departments in the faculty of Science and Technology at Mekele University.

Why the name Electrical and Computer Engineering? As there is a strong demand for Computer engineers in the national and global market, the department have started a new stream of study in Computer Engineering in the under graduate level to be followed by the post graduate program in the near future. Hence, the name “Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering”.

Where do you find Electrical and Computer Engineers? Research and Development :

Developing new products on existing or new technologies. Applied research on new technologies and improving

existing technologies. Design:

Designing of required systems and/or devices for indigenization(modifying)

Designing of interface unit to adapt existing devices with new systems.

Modifying existing system to enhance its utilization. Production/Manufacturing:

Supervising, modifying and optimizing manufacturing process to improve cost effective yields with quality.

Page 7: Engineerine Skills

Installation, operation, and maintenance: After understanding the procedures as given in the

manual of the manufacturer , the Engineer is able to install, operate and maintain the systems.

Analysis and testing: Analyzing and developing test set-ups for testing

system/devices to assess the quality, safety and reliability of performance of the system.

Trouble shooting and repairing the system. Sales, consultation, and purchase:

Sales person for National/International companies. Consulting companies to optimize the price-performance

of systems. Defining and justifying the requirements for sales and

purchase.

“There is the satisfaction of watching an imagination

through the aid of Science and Mathematics to a

plan on paper. Then it moves to realization in gases or

liquids or solids or energy. Then it brings jobs and

facilities to human and elevates the standards of

living. That is the engineers’ high privilege.”

Herbert Hoover
