The game is changing. Business is now more distributed; it is time that employee engagement catches up. Dispersed workforces are influencing:

• how we do business;
• how we communicate;
• how we seek out information;
• how we process knowledge; and
• how we define competition.

Virtual collaboration is on the rise.

• The number of virtual workers has increased by 800% within the last 5 years.

BenefitsofOnlineTrainingManagingInformationOverload:Asinformationissharedmorefreelyandmoreabundantly,knowledgeisnolongerpower.Theabilitytofilterandbeagileiskey.Itisestimatedthatthedigitaluniversedoublesevery18months.10Aswemovefromtheinformationagetothewisdomage,powercomesfromdistillinginformation,applyingittopressingchallengesandinnovatingnewsolutions.

LowCostTraining≠LowQualityTrainingWithmorechoices,moredistractionsandmoreincominginformation,facilitatorsmustadapttheirapproachtovirtuallearning.Tobeeffective,virtualtrainersmustbecompellingin:

• whattheyteach;• howtheydeliverinformation;• whylearningiscritical;and• mostimportantly,whotheyareintheengagement.

Virtuallearningnecessitatestrainers“arrive”preparedtodeliverwithexcellence.Instructionmustbemoreprecise,timely,andrelevant.Theymustfocuslearning:Thisentailstargetingtherightindividuals,designingimpactfulcontent,anddeliveringwithclarity.Onlinetrainingnecessitatesgreaterattentiontoestablishingtherightspeed,withtherightvalueandwithclearrelevance.Andthisnecessitatesthefacilitatorbegameready.Wewillfurtherexplainthefourreasonswhynewbusinesschallengesareleadingtonewtrainingchallenges. Thefacilitatorwaspersonableandprecise.Thetrainingwasexecutedwithexceptionalfocus.Hedeliveredhigh‐valueinformationthatwasappropriatelytargetedfortheaudienceinrelevance,paceanddetail.Hethoroughlyaddressedthekeycurriculumideaswithoutbelaboringpoints.Heofferedtailoredexamplesthathighlightedthelearningpoints.

Ifoundmyselftooengagedtobedistracted.Myemailinboxwasoverflowing,mystomachgrowlingandmyfiancétextingme,andIwasstillcaptivated.Highvalue,highimpact,highrelevance.Myinnernerdwasexperiencingnirvana.

Andthencametheicingonthisintellectualcake.Thetrainingendedprecisely30minutesafterbeginning.Nohooks,nosalespitch,nocreditcardsrequired.Pickyoursportsanalogy‐itwasatripleplay;a3pointer‐allair,norim;aholeinone;aperfect10.

And,therewasmore.Thepresenterconcludedwithagenuineno‐strings‐attachedoffer.Inthefinal1.5minutes,thepresenterofferedlistenersafreeassessment.Again,nohooks,nosalespitch,nocreditcardrequired.Purevalue.

Speed:Everywhereweturn,throughoutorganizations,wehearindividuals,teamsandleaderslamentingthespeedofbusiness:toomuch,toofast,toomanydemands,toomanyexpectations.Multi‐taskinghasbecomeourmodusoperandi‐thedefaultstrategytostaycompetitive,tomanagethedemandsandtoavoidbeingoverwhelmed.Withoverloaded“todolists,”onlinetrainingsmustcommunicatevalue‐proactively.Participantsneedtoknowtrainingbenefitsbeforecommittingtoattendingthesession.Focus:Amidthefastpaceofbusiness,ourattentionisconstantlybeingdiverted.Weareconnected24/7.Outoftheofficenolongermeansawayfromwork.Email,cellphoneandtextmessagingfollowuseverywhere.Accomplishinganythingnecessitatesthatweexerciseanewabilitytofocus.Onlinetrainingmusttargetspecificrelevantissuessothatparticipantsdeletedistractions,turnoffchatsessionsandgivetheirfullattentiontolearningathand.Filter: Weareconstantlybombardedwithnewinformation;developingnewstrategiesfordeletingare

essential.Withalmostunlimitedaccesstoinformation,wefacenewchallengesofsortingthroughthevolumes,differentiatingthevalueandintegratinginsightsintoourover‐fulllives.Withlowcostsofentry,anyonecanpostonthewebandoffer“expert”training.Effectiveonlinetrainingswilldistillcriticalinsights,offerappropriatereferencesandsaveparticipantstheheadacheofsortingthroughreferences.Value:Amidthespeed,pace,andoverloadofbusiness,truevaluecomeswiththecapacitytoofferhighvalueandhighimpactlearningwithlowcostsoftimeandresources.Throughonlinetraining,organizationscanoffermoretouches,morefrequently,andwithmoreresponsivenesstochangingmarketdemands.

TennisvsRacquetball OldvsNewBusiness ClassroomvsVirtualTrainingTennisvsRacquetballWithalongregalhistory,tennisisanexquisitecombinationofelegance,foresightandathleticism.Skillandprecisioncantameyouthandfitness.Youthfulathleticismdoesnotnecessarilytrumpskill.Tobesuccessfulintennis(andold‐schoolbusiness),youneedgamesmarts,skillfulstrokesandfocusedattention.Youropponentiskeptatadistance,acrossthenet.Ifyoustayonyourtoes,lookstraightaheadandkeepyourheadinthegame,youcanbeatyouropponents..Businessusedtobeliketennis.Racquetballoffersanintensitythatparallelsbusinesstoday.Enclosedwithinasmallspace,speed,agility,andresponsetimecanmakeorbreakagame.Tobevictorious,onemustbealwayson,alwaysmoving,alwaysstrategizing,andalwaysthinkingonestepahead.Dancingwithintheconfinedspace,youareconstantlyassessingandrepositioningyourselfinrelationtoyouropponent.Wheretopositiontheshotforthegreatestimpact?Wheretophysicallypositionyourselfwithinthecourttooptimizeresponse?Wheretodirectthenextoffenseattack?Whichofthe4wallsshouldtheattackcomefrom?Ascompetitionincreases,asthespeedofbusinessincreases,asdistributedworkforcesincrease,businessisbecomingmorelikeracquetball.

OldvsNewBusinessBusinesswastennis.Businessisnowracquetball.Speed,agility,andresponsetimeareessential.Thegameisfaster,moreconfined,morephysicallydemanding.Gamechanging“balls”cancomefromanydirection.Thementalandphysicaldemandstostaycompetitiveareexponential.Competitioncancomefromanydirection.Strategiesareconstantlyadaptingbasedonchangingcontext.Complexityabounds:Racquetballhasmorerules.Theballcanbehitoffmoresurfaces.Thecompetitiveadvantage,orbounce,canbelostmorequickly.Thecostsofstandingstillorbeing“hit”canhavegreaterimpact.(Askanyonewho’sbeenhitbybotharacquetballandtennisball).Tryingtoplayracquetballwithatennisballcanfeellikeawildgoosechase.Toomuch,toofast.Tocompeteatracquetball,youneedtobefocused,adaptingandadjustingquickly.Applyingracquetballskillstobusiness,youmustdevelopspeed,agilityandfocus.Thosepeoplewhoarestillplayingtenniswiththeirbusinessorwhoarepresentingtheirvirtualpresentationswithafuzzyballwillnotachievethedirectionoraccuracythattheirracquetball‐playing counterparts exhibit.Jumpintothegamenow.

ClassroomvsVirtualTrainingWhatweusedtodoonthetenniscourtsissimilartohowwetrainedintheclassroom.Attentionwasfocusedinonedirection.Trainershadcaptiveaudiences,greatervisualcues,longerperiodsofresponsetimeandthus,greaterabilitytoadaptandrespondtoparticipants.Directcontactandin‐persontrainingsareveryhumanizing,offeringmoreopportunitiestorecoverfromchallenges.Dissatisfiedparticipantsmustdisrupttheirpeersiftheydecidetooptoutofthelearningenvironment,forexample,byleavingorbycheckingemail.Social/peerpressurekeepsthemintheroomandoffersthefacilitatortheoptionofre‐engagingthem.Virtualtrainingislikeracquetball.Participantshavenumerousdistractions,comingfromallangles,themajorityofwhichthefacilitatorcannotsee(orimagine/anticipate).Themajorityofparticipantsaredistractedandinperpetualmotion‐checkingemail,eatinglunch,

cleaningtheirdeskorthinkingthroughtheirafterworkplans.Thereislesssocialpeerpressuretostayengaged.Onceaparticipant“checksout”itisnearlyimpossibletore‐engagethem.Facilitatorswiththerightpreparation,withtheproperagility,withtheessentialfocus,andthepreciseintensitycandeliveroutstandinglearninginlesstimeandwithgreaterimpactonline.Justlikeagameofracquetballdemandsgreaterintensity,moreprecisionandgreateragility,virtualtrainingscanoffersignificantlymorebangforthebuck‐ifthefacilitatoris“inshape.”

Highvalue,highimpact,highrelevance,andlowercostthananticipated.

Deliveringinstructioneffectivelyfromadistancenecessitatesfacilitatorsbe“inbettertrainingshape,”perfectingboththeirinnergameofhowtodeliverandtheirouterorexternalgameofwhattodeliver,longbeforegameday.Virtualtrainingsmustofferhighervaluecontentthatconsistentlyengagesparticipants.Withgreatercompetitionforparticipants’attention,moreprecisionisneededinwhat,why,howandwhodelivers.

TheNeedforMoreEngagingTrainingThe“traininggame”ischanging.Gonearethedaysofdryintellectualtheory.Gonearethedaysofdegreesequatingtoexpertise.Educationhasmorphedinto“Edutainment.”Contentmustbemorecompelling,focused,impactfulandrelevant.Ideasmustbepackagedassoundbites.

Learningmustbeengaging,shouldleveragediverselearningmodalities,andideallyoffermultimedia‐allwhilesimultaneouslyofferingevenmorevalue,morequickly.Withnumerousdemands,infinitedistractionsandshorteningattentionspans,deliveringeffectivemessagesnecessitatesgreaterprecision.

“Pop‐culturalattentionspan”seeks“globallydifferentiatingbusinesswisdom.”

Although“anyonecanteach,”deliveringimpactful,highvaluelearningpreciselyisanartform.Successfulvirtualtrainingdemandsanewgamestrategyandnecessitateshigherstandards.

What:Withmoreinformationavailable,contentmustbebothmorefocusedandimpactful.Why:Withmoredemandsforattention,relevanceandapplicabilitymustbecommunicatedclearly.How:Withmoredistraction,deliverymustbepreciseandengaging.Who:Withmoreaccountability,authenticity,credibilityandtrustworthinessaremoreessential.

In the past, knowledge was power. 

Today, knowledge is free. Value drives power.

SecretstoDeliveringEffectiveVirtualTrainingsWhatYouDeliverMatters:Knowyourmaterial:Participantsvotebygivingtheirattentiontowhatmattersmosttothem.Increasedconnectivitymeansdecreasedresponsetime.Similartotheracquetballgame,ifyouhavetothinkabouthowtohittheball,youattentionisdivertedfromthecompetition.

Onlinefacilitatorsmustknowtheircontentcold;theirfocusmustbeonengagingandconnectingwithparticipants.

Time is money:Addvaluequicklyandconstantly.Thisstartsbeforeyoubegin.

Agility is essential:Knowyourmaterialsodeeplythatyoucanteachthesameconcept4differentwaysto4differenttypesoflearners.

Expect curve balls:Onlinetrainingallowsyoutoreachmoreindividualsfrommorediversesettings,whowillhavemorediverseneedsandmorediversequestions.

Differentiate yourself:Electroniccommunicationhasnearlyerasedthecostofenteringthetrainingworld.Moretrainingisofferedbyindividualswithlimitedexpertise.Over‐deliver,before,duringandaftertheprogram.

KnowyourmarketandF.A.D.:Exceptionaltrainersleverageresearchtoknowtheirmarketwithprecision.Segmentandknowyourmarketsothatyoubecomeatrusted,

go‐toadvisor.Withmoredemands,moreinformation,morecommunication,asaculturewearemorestimulated,moredistracted,moreoverextendedthaneverbefore.

Filter to Focus: Knowwhatmatterstothemanddelivercontentthatisontarget,ontopic,ontime.

Attention is the new scarce resource:Respectyourparticipantsandtreattheirattentioncarefully.Withmoretodosthanthereistimeintheday,cherishyourparticipants’attentionbydelivering.

Differentiate yourself: Withmorecompetitionandmoredistraction,deliverhighvalue,quickly.Separatenicetoknowfromneedtoknow.

Withvirtualtrainings,wehavebroughtteamstogether,conqueredconflicts(someover20yearsold)andimplementednewsystemsglobally.Withvisualaidsandclearinformation,theteamachievedtheirgoalswithinafewmonths.
