MEETING THE CHALLENGE WITH A SMARTLAB®
“A SmartLab has no boundaries. A place with no boundaries means kids exceed anything you ever expected.”
-Courtney Miller, SmartLab Facilitator
The need to engage all students in STEM education is a critical challenge facing schools. In addition to meeting traditional academic standards, teachers and administrators look to integrate new ways to prepare students to succeed in a world that hasn’t been invented and in jobs that do not yet exist.
For schools or districts struggling to meet this challenge, Creative Learning Systems develops SmartLab® programs for elementary, middle, and high schools. This individualized, standards-aligned learning space increases the capacity for learning through engaged, active, and social problem solving. Everything – from the furniture and technology to curriculum and assessment – work together to support hands-on, minds-on learning.
A SmartLab® creates an environment where students:
• Take responsibility for their own learning and teachers become facilitators
• Master next generation skills, like communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking
• Apply a wide range of technologies to age-appropriate projects they design • Find mentors to solve real-world problems and build connections to local businesses and institutions
• Develop and share high-impact project presentations to include in future job or college applications

CREATIVE LEARNING SYSTEMS
OUR MISSION: ENGAGE EVERY LEARNER, EVERY DAY.
Since creating the first technology lab in a U.S. school in 1987, Creative Learning Systems has pioneered STEM and digital media arts programs in K–12 education. Together with our partner schools across the country, we put technology in the hands of students and engage them with personalized, problem-based learning.
Our academic mission is to provide pedagogical support and provisioning to sustain a rigorous, inclusive, and academically focused program for students K–12. There are four teams at Creative Learning Systems that support this mission and ensure success in our SmartLabs:
will grow up having careers that do not exist yet. Today, more than ever, it is crucial to prepare every student to have the confidence to invent the world they want to live in.OF STUDENTS

ONGOING SUPPORT TO ENSURE EVERY STUDENT’S SUCCESS
They have it all in one package: the professional development, the equipment, the training, and the support. We felt confident that they really knew how to integrate STEM into our classrooms and could make it possible without having to put all the pieces together ourselves.” “ Dr. Stoney Beaver, Assistant Superintendent

Students WillExploreThrough engaged, active, and social problem solving, SmartLab® curriculum is designed to teach students the most important skill to excel in college and a career: the capacity to learn. Students login to a secure interface, called the LaunchPad, where they explore a wide range of rigorous projects and applied technology. Students
can then choose their learning path with different challenge levels and activites they design. The result is a rich learning environment where collaboration and communication are core competencies, and students develop the next generation skills that will launch them into college and career success.

Learners use leading-edge technologies and are
empowered to shape their own learning.
Facilitators provide students with a road map and
are equipped to guide learners through a rotation
of project engagements.
Learning is focused on the application of
technology rather than on specific technology
skills that become quickly obsolete.
Every learner can develop next generation skills
with rigorous activities they design on their own.
WHY TEACHERSCHOOSE SMARTLABS:
Teachers can provide students with more choice
than ever before – with over 500 STEM experiences.
ePortfolio system provides a framework for

Young learners engage in authentic, first-hand experiences in STEM, building critical background knowledge and interest in STEM concepts. Students learn to develop project objectives and document their learning in ePortfolios, daily journals and project presentations. Activity cards: Students rotate through projects in upper elementary grades while whole-class, teacher-led activities provide age-appropriate guidance for younger learners.
K–2 Grades
3-5 Grades
5-8 Grades
As learners progress, the structure of the curriculum changes to allow for even deeper exploration and engagement. ePortfolio templates guide learners as they maintain daily learning journals, create project presentations, and reflect on their learning. Express Challenges: Designed for whole-class activities where all students engage in the same activity and use the same resources.
Students choose an appropriate challenge level, apply their own interests and learning styles, and explore questions of personal relevance through the eight systems of technology. ePortfolio expectations increase with grade level and experience. Project-based learning: Teams work in projects and apply a wide range of technologies as they rotate through a carefully crafted sequence of learning engagements.
9–12 GradesOur upper level curriculum is designed to facilitate the development of large scale projects with expert mentors who are solving community problems.
Professional portfolio: projects and outcomes are presented utilizing advanced digital media.

ONE PROGRAMMULTIPLE SOLUTIONS
Most educators recognize that new challenges require new approaches. Creative Learning Systems has experience supporting a variety of critical educational initiatives, including:
Boost students’ writing, communications, creativity, and organizational skills with a fully-
integrated video production system. Use the program to
expand outreach to your school community.
SmartLab® projects relate to students’ lives and are
open-ended to encourage curiosity and creativity. As a result, learners are intrinsically motivated to explore questions connected to their
interests.
A SmartLab® requires students to think critically as they define goals and problems to solve using
a variety of technologies. Projects are desiged to
foster new ideas, innovative solutions, and informed
decision-making.
With translation and text-to-speech features, students of all learning abilities can thrive in a SmartLab®. Facilitators can create a curriculum path that addresses required content
areas and supports IEP goals & objectives.
Increase STEM awareness with addtional programs,
such as camps or after-school programs. Now you can reach a wide
range of students who do not otherwise have
access to STEM learning opportunities.
Partner with companies on relevant SmartLab® projects to give students the opportunity to explore and solve real-world
problems. As they get older, they can explore topics in greater
depth, building career-related experiences and areas of
expertise.
