hank you to everyone who made the 16th Annual Art, Wine & Brew Gala such a smashing success! Over 300 people were able to sample cuisine from the best restaurants in O’Fallon, as

well as sampling brews from Krey Distributing including their newest lines of Purus vodka and Taste of Florida mixers. Major Brands distributing brought in wines from four of Missouri’s hottest wineries and some of their top selling liquors. Cedar Lake Farms was also on hand to sample and sell their tasty wines.

After our party-goers were fi lled to the brim with the delectable samples, My Friend Mike kept them on the dance fl oor upstairs for the remainder of the event. Not only were our attendees able to taste great food, sample from the best drinks available and dance the night away with a terrifi c band, they were also able to enjoy the artwork of some great local artists including a

caricature artist, who drew an estimated 100 caricature pictures of our guests. This spectacular event is held each year in order to promote our member restaurants as well as raise funds for the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce so that we can keep our membership dues at a level that is affordable to all of our businesses.

Thank you to the committee whose hard work made both of those goals a reality. his new program of the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce hopes to expose our members to

new thoughts and ideas from some of today’s top rated business and management books, while also fostering the open exchange of past experiences and opinions of our members so that we can learn from each other, and in turn, create a more successful business and workplace.

The fi rst book on our list is Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? , written by Seth Godin. “The only way to get what you’re worth is to stand out, to exert emotional labor, to be seen as indispensable, and to produce interactions that organizations and people care deeply about.”

In best sellers such as Purple Cow and Tribes, Seth Godin taught readers how to make remarkable products and spread powerful ideas. But this book is different. It’s about you - your choices, your future, and your potential to make a huge difference in whatever fi eld you choose.

There used to be two teams in every workplace: management and labor. Now there’s a third team, the linchpins. These people invent, lead (regardless of title), connect others, make things happen, and create order out of chaos. They fi gure out what to do when there’s no rule book. They delight and challenge their customers and peers. They love their work, pour their best selves into it, and turn each day into a kind of art.

As Godin writes, “Every day I meet people who have so much to give but have been bullied enough or frightened enough to hold it back. It’s time to stop complying with the system and draw your own map. You have brilliance in you, your contribution is essential, and the art you create is precious. Only you can do it, and you must.”

The Chairman’s Book Club will be hosting the discussion of this book on Monday, April 2nd at 9:00 a.m. at the Deer Run Library Branch, located on Main Street. To sign up for the group or to check out Linchpin contact Erin at the Chamber Offi ce, (636) 240-1818 or

[email protected]. Hard copies, e-reader copies and audio downloads are available.

Thank you to the Friends of the St. Charles City-County Library District for partnering with us for this program.

BUILDING BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH LEADS GROUPS

W e’ve heard it before. “It’s not what you know, but who you know.” It’s catchy, a

bit cliché, but it’s true. So how do you get to know other people? How do you make acquaintances that develop into business relationships and may even result in friendships? The answer is networking! And partnering its members with networking opportunities is one of the goals of the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce. In addition to the opportunities provided through our General Membership Luncheon (held monthly), our Business After Hours, and our Morning Schmooze events the Chamber also hosts two Leads Groups (with a third group in the works).

The Chamber Leads Groups have been referred to (in house) as “beginners BNI” (Business Network International©). They are similar to other groups in that they are composed of individuals from various industries, with only one industry representative per group, who commit to do business with those individuals in the group, refer others to their businesses, and pass along

contact information for potential clients or customers to each other. Some of the differences between the Chamber groups and others are that they meet the second and fourth weeks of the month instead of meeting weekly; members are allowed to miss up to two meetings per quarter, and agree two pass along two leads per quarter instead of one each week. Probably the biggest and most appealing difference is that the Chamber’s groups are just one of the numerous benefi ts of membership in the Chamber and do not include any additional fees or registration costs. The O’Fallon Chamber prides itself on the number of quality services it’s able to provide to its members without “nickel and diming” them at every turn.

If you’re not currently part of a networking group and would be interested in one of our three groups, we would love to talk with you more about the opportunities available and which group might be the best for you. Check out the information to the right about what industries are currently represented in which group.

hat better way to start your Fourth of July than enjoying Chick-fi l-a chicken sandwiches,

ice cream, popsicles, doughnuts, cookies, chips and salsa along with drinking beer and Monster energy drink? Of course, you fi rst had to wake up by 7am to run anywhere from one to six miles. But that’s exactly what eleven hundred people gathered at the T.R. Hughes Ball Park to do. And now that the sun’s rays have fi rmly implanted visions of summer in our heads, it’s time to start thinking about the 28th Annual Firecracker Run 5k/10k, 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk. Our committee

has already started meeting to plan this year’s race and we are eagerly anticipating upwards of 1,300-1,500 participants. The Firecracker Run is the Chambers biggest event of the year and both participants and committee members have a lot of fun in the process. If you would like to help with the planning committee, it’s not too late to get involved! The committee’s next meeting will be Friday, March 23rd at 12 Noon at the Chamber offi ces at 1299 Bryan Road. In addition to the committee there are also numerous opportunities to publicize your

business through sponsorships which range in amount from $250 to $1,000. Sponsorship includes things like logos on race shirts, banners, logos on websites and promotional materials, and a booth at the event, as well as entries in the race itself. To fi nd out more information about the race go to www.ofallonchamber.org/fi recracker or call the Chamber offi ce at (636) 240-1818. Also, be sure to like our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/fi recrackerrun.

Church in a Bowling Alley?O’Fallon Church Encouraging Families to Have Fun Together On Easter.“Kids, hurry up and get in the car! We’re going to be late for bowling and laser tag!’ Not exactly what you’d expect to hear as families rush out the door on Easter Sunday. But one O’Fallon church hopes to have something to say about that. “In a day when eating meals as a family has become a rare event in many homes, we want to provide a ready-made event for people.” says Pastor Sam Byers of Tree of Life Community Church. That’s why the new, non-denominational church will be holding it’s at 9:30am Easter service on Sunday April 8th at Brunswick Zone XL (located at 8070 Veterans Memorial Parkway in St. Peters). “Easter is about celebration. The Bible teaches that the only person to ever live a perfect life died and rose again defeating death, sin, and Satan and we believe that’s something worth celebrating. There are lots of ways to celebrate the kind of life that Jesus provides and we’re hoping some folks will do so by sticking around after our service to use free game cards, eat lunch together, and enjoy special rates on bowling and laser tag.” The community is invited to arrive early for coffee and doughnuts. Childcare will be provided for children ages six weeks through kindergarten. For more information check out the church’s website at www.treeofl ife.cc or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TreeofLifeCC or (636) 525.1569.

MARCH 2012 | BUSINESS CONNECTION | 15

How long have you been in the O’Fallon area?I am originally from Alton, IL. I joined the Army and left home at 18 years old. I traveled a little bit in my 9 years of service. I moved back to this area from Texas in July of 2005, so almost 7 years now.

Tell us about your family?I am married to a wonderful man who is also my best friend. We have four children, an 18 year old girl, a 12 year old boy, a 22 month old baby girl, and we are due again with another boy in May of this year. Yes I know, quite the age gap there. I suppose I will never have to worry about “empty nest syndrome”!

What is your educational background?I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice Administration. I started this degree when I was in the service and fi nished it once I completed my time in the service. Total time invested was just over three years. I received this degree through a lot of hard work and discipline at the University of Phoenix.

Tell us about your organization?Reliance Bank has been in the St Louis Metro area since 1999. We started as a small one branch organization on Manchester Road in Des Peres. Over the course of about 10 years we expanded to a 20 branch network. We are a St Louis Community Bank.

Reliance Bank is a full service bank offering all of the products of a large bank but with the small community bank atmosphere and feel. We take pride in knowing our customers by name and we answer our phones when you call our branches. We don’t believe in “touchpad run around”. We have 3 branches in St Charles County, 13 branches in St Louis County, and 4 branches just to the east in Illinois. All Reliance Bank branches are the same when it comes to customer service. I’m sure you hear other banks talking up how great their customer service is, but you really have to visit one of our locations to experience it for yourself! So the next time you are looking for a small business line of credit, a mortgage on your home, fee free accounts, or just some good old fashioned banking advice stop on by to see what Reliance Bank has to offer.

What is the mission/vision of your organization? To offer all of the banking products of the bigger banks at competitive prices and maintain that friendly hometown community bank atmosphere while delivering superior customer service as we serve our communities with top notch service and products.

How has that mission changed over the years that you have been in business?

Our mission has not changed over the years. Superior customer service, top notch products and satisfaction have been our goal since day one and we’ve consistently delivered such since we opened our doors back in 1999.

What do you do to get to know your clients best? We get to know our customers on a more personal level. We are interested in you as a person and not just a customer. We get to know your business, your family, friends, and pets! We listen to you and put you into products that will best fi t you, your business and your family’s fi nancial needs. We currently offer a “Business of the Month” recognition table where we pick one of our business customers to bring in wares and literature to advertise their business right inside our lobby! If you would like to display your business in our lobby, stop by and see me so we can talk about it!

What are you most looking forward to in the next 5 years for the company?I’m most looking forward to getting Reliance Bank’s name out there into the community. I want every person to know that if you are looking for the small town banking feel with the convenience of big bank products, Reliance Bank is your answer. We’re not just “another” bank, we’re THE bank! Once you come in and meet our staff you won’t want to bank anywhere else!
