March 6th, 2014 – Term 1 Week 6 Croydon Hills Primary School

Principal’s Report Every Day Counts

We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day.

Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school.

There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes.

Coming to school every day is vital, but if for any reason your child must miss school, there are steps you can take to ensure they don’t fall behind:

Speak with your classroom teacher to find out what work your child needs to do to keep up.

Develop an absence learning plan with your school and ensure your child completes the plan.

Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school for an extended period, speak with your classroom teacher as early as possible.

In Victoria from 1 March 2014, new laws will mean that parents can be fined for not sending students to school without an acceptable reason.

It is also important that parents inform the class teacher regarding the reason for an absence. This can be done by note or email or the link from the school website currently. This is also a legal requirement. Where a child is absent for more than 3 days without the school knowing why, we are required to make contact with the family.

Compass

This year we have commenced using a student management system called Compass. Some parents will be familiar with it, as it is used in all government secondary schools in the area. It is currently being used by staff to mark the electronic roll and to keep track of information regarding each student. Later in the term we will be requesting that parents sign on to Compass. We will be adding more functions during this year, but it will enable parents in the first instance to track and authorise absences. Later in Term 2 it will be providing the mid year reports to parents and will provide a way of receiving, authorising and paying for school activities and excursions. We look forward to this being a one stop location for many of the functions which currently require the shuffling of paper back

and forth to school.

National Ride2School Day

Wednesday March 19th is the day where the national focus on riding to school. It is a school community event that encourages

all modes of active transport: walking and cycling. Students, parents and teachers are all welcome to participate.

Riding or walking to school has many benefits:

Students gain regular physical activity and feel fresh and alert.

Fewer cars on the road, reducing congestion, parking issues and air pollution around the school.

Students feel happier, are healthier and perform better at school.

School community has pride in improving the safety, atmosphere and civic connectedness of the local neighbourhood.

We would encourage as many people as possible to ride or walk on this day. .

Sports News Interschool Sports Last week we played sport against Kalinda PS. Well done to all the teams for the way they have been conducting themselves whether they win or lose their games. Their good manners have been noticeable, so keep it up kids, you are doing a great job. Results: SPORT

Two of our teams have ‘forfeit’ results each week because we have boys in our girls’ teams, due to the fact that we don’t have enough girls in the seniors to fill the teams. If these Mixed teams win the games, they still have to forfeit, as the rules only allow for girls. Its great though that they are getting the practice and experience of playing against other schools, as many of these players are Year 5 students.

Team Vic Trials This week we have started the Team Vic Trials and have completed Basketball and Football. Children who are selected to compete at the District level will come up against the best in other schools in our Division. There are 29 schools in the area

who may or may not send their representatives. Once they compete, they will be tested for their skills and if successful, they progress to the next level. After many progressions, the successful athletes are selected to represent Victoria in a National Competition in the 4 main sports of Football (AFL), Soccer, Netball and Basketball. We will be having the Soccer trials on Friday and the Netball trials next Tuesday. Thankyou to all those children who have tried out so far. It’s great to see those who know they are capable having a go. Thanks also to the staff who have been assisting with these trials.

Tennis Hot Shots Last year our school became involved in the Tennis Victoria Hot Shots program, where we had Sue Saliba from the Yarrunga Community / Parkwood Tennis club come and give some lessons during her clinics in class time. We have also been granted some equipment, lots of new bright tennis racquets, low compression balls and some nets. Students and / or parents have also been able to log onto the web to claim their FREE T-shirt and there have also been gifts coming with these t-shirts. I have received a large shipment of t-shirts, which were ordered at the end of last year and early this year. Some of these have also come with a SpongeBob Square pants back pack. These are going to be organized ready for distribution by some helping parents on Friday. Thank you to Kate Wilson and Jenny Ball and any other parents who can assist these ladies to help sort them out. Anyone who has not yet ordered their FREE t-shirt can still order it online as the school gets a rebate for each t-shirt ordered right up until June this year. If you would like to support our Tennis program and order a FREE t-shirt, and receive a FREE SpongeBob Square Pants backpack for a limited time, copy and paste this link into your URL. -

CHAPS NEWS

If you have a child in Foundation or Junior levels, look out for a flyer coming home today about the school disco. This will be held on 28th March and is always great fun for the kids. We will be hosting a get together in the staff room for the parents while the children are dancing, away which will be a great opportunity for the parents to get to know each other a bit better. We have finalised our fundraising/social events for the years and will provide details soon but in the meantime, we will be having a trivia night later in the year and are looking for donations of prizes. If you or anyone you know are able to help out with some great prizes perhaps in exchange for some business advertising please let me know. 2014 CHAPS membership forms have gone home but if you have misplaced your form and wish to join one is attached to the newsletter for your convenience. Our next meeting is on Monday 31/3 at 9.00am in the conference room. We had some new faces at the last meeting and we would love to see some more at the next one. If you have never been to a meeting before it is a great chance to meet new people and have your voice heard. In the meantime if you have any questions at all about CHAPS, please do not hesitate to contact me.
