Xiu Yi Owns National Mark Singapore Youth Olympic Festival
Gail Chia
Executive, Strategic Communications
Ho Xiu Yi created a stir at SAFRA Yishun Indoor Air Weapons Range on 26 June 2016 when she shot
420.3 points to claim the Women’s 10m Air Rifle National Record.
The Secondary 4 student-athlete was taking part in the 2016 Singapore Youth Olympic Festival when she
achieved this feat, which also helped her to comfortably win the Youth 17 gold medal.
In February 2016, Xiu Yi missed qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games by a mere 0.4 points when
she shot 417.6 points in the Asia Olympic Qualifying Competition. She came back stronger, recording a
Personal Best of 419.0 points at the 2016 Nanyang Technological University Invitational Shoot in March.
Three months later, Xiu Yi set a new PB – and rewrote the National Record of 419.8 points set by
Olympian Jasmine Ser in February 2016.
“Shooting a new Personal Best is a good indication that I’m moving in the right direction in my sport
development. Breaking the National Record is a bonus and motivation for me to continue towards
representing Singapore at the Olympic Games one day,” said Xiu Yi.
Despite several good performances recently, Xiu Yi is not resting on her laurels.
“My short-term goal is to be able to perform not only at local competitions, but at international meets
as well. To get there, I have plans to work on my pre- and mid-competition routines, to achieve
consistency in my mental state at competitions so as to perform my best. I was going through a rough
patch in my sport a few weeks prior to the SYOF. However, that made me stronger. Through the low
point in my sport, I learnt how to cope with bad shots and to persevere during tough times.
“These small successes which I have achieved in the recent months doesn’t give me an excuse to train
less than before. There will come a point in the future when the same effort I’m putting in now will not
be enough for further improvement. I may have to wait to see the fruits of my labour, but I look forward
to the day when the hard work I put in now comes to fruition.”
Altogether, Singapore Sports School’s Shooting Academy bagged 7 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze medals at
the SYOF. In the 12 events that were offered at the competition, Sports School’s shooters enjoyed clean
sweeps in the 10m Air Rifle Youth 15 Men’s and Women’s events.

Proof That Sports And Studies Can Mix
2016 May IBDP Examination Results
To give up their sport dreams and hole up to prepare for the IBDP November 2015 Examination or defer
the completion of their pre-university education by six months was not a difficult decision that
synchronised swimmer Natalie Chen Mei Qing and netballer Avelyn Leong Kit Yan had to make.
Natalie was looking forward to performing as part of Team Singapore at the Southeast Asian Games for
the second time, while Avelyn was in the running to represent Singapore at the 2015 Asian Youth
Netball Championship. Both were also confident that their teachers at Singapore Sports School would
help them to catch up on their studies after their competitions were over.
Both girls fulfilled their dreams with Natalie winning two gold medals at the Singapore 2015 Sea Games
last June and Avelyn returning with a bronze medal from Hongkong in December. They were also all
smiles when they received their International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Examination results on
6 July 2016 – Avelyn scored 40 points out of a possible 45, and Natalie was just 1 point shy from a
perfect score. Avelyn and Natalie are the only two student-athletes from Sports School who sat for the
May 2016 examination.
“I knew that I would be missing lots of lessons due to my hectic Sea Games training regime. As such, I
chose to defer my examination as that would give me the flexibility to pursue excellence in both sports
and studies,” said Natalie, who, at 14 years old, won 1 silver and 1 bronze medal at the Jakarta 2011 Sea
Games.
“My teachers were very caring and made extra effort to have consultations with me to help me catch up
on the lessons I missed. I was very confident that this was the best programme for me. I would not have
been able to score 44 points without the kind of support that I was given. I am grateful to the Sports
School for this,” added Natalie.
Avelyn, too, credited her good results to the strong support from the academic staff at the Sports School.
“The resources we have at Sports School are tremendous and I trusted the system enough to take the
risk. It is not easy to juggle sports and studies and we managed to only because we had a team of
dedicated teachers to guide and encourage us,” said Avelyn.
Besides contributing to the 2015 Asian Youth Netball Championship bronze medal, Avelyn was also part
of the team that finished runners-up at the 2015 Netball Super League.
Seven in 10 of Sports School’s first cohort of student-athletes who sat for the IBDP Examination in
November 2015 achieved 40 points and more. Among them were netball player Deborah Wong Weng
Ee, who at 17 years old in 2014, was selected for the National U21 netball team; Bernard Ong Soon Yang
who represented Singapore at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games; and Daphne Oh Xin Yi, President
of the Student’s Council, who won the 2015 Australia National Youth Cup Ladies’ division and 1 gold, 1
silver and 2 bronze medals at the 2015 Australia National Youth Challenge to help the Sports School win
the Overall Women’s Team trophy.
In June 2015, Sports School signed a Memorandum of Understanding with International Baccalaureate
Organization and World Academy of Sport, allowing selected student-athletes in high performance sport
up to four years to complete their post-secondary IBDP. Seven student-athletes who started on this
post-secondary programme on 4 January 2016 have opted for the longer pathway – three on the 4-year
track and four on the 3-year track.

General Manager, Badminton Academy
Singapore Sports School’s Badminton Academy participated in the Singapore Youth Olympic Festival on
2 July and 3 July 2016 when our girls and boys teams clinched both U17 titles on offer. Our U17 Girls
defeated Nanyang Girls High School and our U17 Boys beat Adventec – both 3-0.
Our U15 boys settled for silver after losing 1-2 to Nameless; our U15 girls failed to get past the quarter-
finals. Nonetheless, our student-athletes can be very proud of their performances at Jurong Sports Hall
as our coaches had sent a very young team to provide them an opportunity for exposure and
experience.
The Singapore Youth Olympic Festival celebrates sporting excellence in youths and gives Singapore’s
budding young athletes an important platform to improve their skills and pursue their sporting dreams,
with more than 70 teams participating in the competition.

Striking Gold On Home Soil
9th Singapore Sports School-Opulent International Bowling Championship
Nur Amirah Ng and Caitlan Lim Le Yi
Student-Athletes, Bowling Academy
The Singapore Sports School-Opulent International Bowling Championship U18 trophy has been retained
in Singapore – thanks to Secondary 4 student-athlete Jarred Lim Jia Le.
Jarred defeated classmate and Singapore Bowling Federation teammate Aidan Poh 234-191 in the last
round of the Stepladder Finals for the $5,000 cash prize.
“The AMF pattern was a tricky one, but I just told myself to focus on rolling the ball and not forcing it.
This way, I will not rush through my shots, and made sure that I closed every frame so as to keep a
decent score,” said Jarred.
Aidan kept himself in the top 4 during the Masters Final and eventually made it to face off Jarred. He
said his strategy was to just focus on the process and not think about the outcome. Indeed, it was a
good strategy as he achieved his first podium finish in four years.
Anis Shazlin Zulkhisham, who represented Hyster Malaysia, finished third. She was very consistent
throughout the 12-game Masters Final and eventually became the only female bowler to qualify for the
Stepladder Finals.
Round 1 of the Stepladder Finals saw Yeh Chen-Kuang from Chinese Taipei being pitched against Soh
Yong Ping and Timothy Theodore Tham Fu Rong – both post-secondary student-athletes and SBF
teammates. Chen-Kuang knocked down 197 pins to comfortably beat Yong Ping (183) and Timothy (181).
Round 2 saw Aidan top-score with 210 pinfalls, followed by Anis (199) and Chen-Kuang (177).
The Singapore Sports School-Opulent International Bowling Championship lapsed for a year in 2015
because the tournament dates clashed with the 28th Southeast Asian Games which was hosted in
Singapore. The 9th edition of the annual event returned this year from 15 June to 19 June and saw 66
bowlers from Brunei Darussalam, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, including a handful
from the National Training Squad, competing for the U18 title.
Previous winners from the Sports School are Marcus Kiew Jiawei (2014), Howard Saw Hui-Zhe (2012),
Muhammad Jaris Goh Ali Akbar Goh (2011) and Ng Chiew Pang (2008).
Daily reports were filed by Caitlin Lim, Ian Oei, Nur Amirah Ng, Pascal Ching Sarah Nahar Azmi and Quek
Lu Yi.
We would like to thank the many parents who came to encourage the bowlers and helped to host our
guest bowlers and their parents, coaches and managers.
Second Silver For Aidan
16th Chinese Taipei International Open Championships
Alvin Koh
General Manager, Bowling Academy
In back-to-back international competitions, Aidan Poh has struck his second silver, this time, at the 16th
Chinese Taipei International Open Championships, from 1 July to 9 July 2016.
The Secondary 4 student-athlete finished just 14 pins behind Chen Chia-Hsin from Chinese Taipei after 8
games in the Youth Finals, an U21 event.
“It wasn't the strikes but the spares that helped me to qualify for the Masters Final, and this led me to
realise just how important spares are,” said Aidan, who was the runner-up at the 9th Singapore Sports
School-Opulent International Bowling Championship in June 2016.
Two other Singapore Sports School classmates and Singapore Bowling Federation teammates made the
Youth Masters Final in Kaohsiung. Jarred Lim Jia Le, who was in the running for a podium prize, threw a
155 last game and finished 5th, while Oh Han Qin ended his campaign 15th.
In the Men’s Open Division, Jarred was the only Masters Final qualifier from SBF. He entered as the fifth
highest scorer in the Overseas Pool with a two-series six-game average of 214.83, and eventually
finished 36th out of 38 finalists.
FENCING
15 Medals In First Overseas Ranking Competition
Australia U15 and Cadet Fencing Championship 2016
David Chen Chien-Yuan
Coach, Fencing Academy
The Australia U15 and Cadet Fencing Championship 2016 is an event recognised by Fencing Singapore as
one of the ranking events in the new local ranking system. Being the first overseas ranking competition
for the 2016/2017 fencing season, the event saw many Singaporeans participating – besides Singapore
Sports School. It is also the first time since our Academy’s inception that we had 33 student-athletes
across five levels (Secondary 1 to IBDP Year 5), three coaches and one General Manager involved in one
event, making it the largest team in our Academy’s history.
Sports School fencers brought home 4 gold medals, 4 silver medals and 7 bronze medals. Secondary 1’s
Yu Sihan scored double gold in both the U15 and Cadet (U17) Individual Women’s Epee event, while
Secondary 4’s Nicole Wee Sher Tynn won the gold medal in the Cadet Individual Women’s Sabre event.
She then led the gold medal team consisting of Secondary 4’s Lee Kar Moon, Secondary 2’s Megan Au
Cheok Tung and Secondary 1’s Jean Koh. Our fencers’ next competitions are the National Cadet Fencing
Championships on 22 July and 24 July, followed by the Hong Kong U20 Open Fencing Championship
during the last week of July.
To help save costs and to enable our student-athletes to learn to be more independent, we decided to
stay in a hostel and relied on public transport to get to the venue each day, instead of chartering a bus.
Our student-athletes did their own grocery shopping, prepared their own breakfast and did their own
laundry. On a lighter side, the Fencing Academy had the chance to interact and train with Australian
fencers. We toured famous attractions such as the Sydney Opera House and participated in an exciting
jet boat ride at the harbour.

Holiday Camp Cum Learn To Fence Programme
Loo Zhao Rong Luan
General Manager, Fencing Academy
Singapore Sports School’s Fencing Academy hosted its inaugural holiday camp as part of its Learn To
Fence Programme from 21 to 23 June 2016. This year’s class was the largest ever, with 41 Primary 4 and
5 pupils attending the introductory programme since its inception in 2014.
Participants were taken through a curriculum designed by our team of coaches. The curriculum covered
fundamentals of the sport such as agility and coordination exercises, footwork drills, simple attacks and
simple defences. Fencing Academy student-athletes were also present to guide the participants through
each session – correcting movements and providing one-to-one coaching at times. Despite having to
perform physically-demanding drills from Day 1 of the camp, the budding fencers remained committed
throughout the three-day camp. We were most impressed with their enthusiasm and perseverance
despite being new to the sport.
On the final day of the programme, six teachers from Lianhua Primary School, who were in Sports School
to learn how to teach basic fencing to their pupils, joined in the camp. They, too, assisted our fencing
coaches and student-athletes in coaching and assessing the participants.
Before the camp concluded, Fencing Academy student-athletes performed demonstrations of all three
weapons – épée, foil and sabre – to the delight of the participants and their parents. In an informal poll
at the end of the programme, the majority of the participants indicated that they had enjoyed
themselves very much and would like to continue learning the sport, while parents were most eager to
know the next step forward for their children. Through the camp, several promising participants were
identified by our Sports School coaches to join the Fencing Academy’s Learn To Fence Programme
weekly advance classes to develop their skills and ability. Pupils who show potential in the sport at
Primary 6 may be invited to enrol at the Sports School the following year.

Post-secondary student-athlete Nicholas Mok Chee Yong took one step closer towards his goal of a
college scholarship in the USA when he won the Boys Championship at the Junior Tour of Northern
California Summer Series III.
He shot an even 144 to beat Thomas Hutchinson by one stroke at the two-day tournament on 20 June
and 21 June 2016.
Key to his victory was his performance on the second day, when the 18-year-old posted five birdies and
an eagle to card a final round of 69 at the par-72 Coyote Creek Golf Course in San Jose, California.
“It was a nice win, and I hope this will convince college coaches that I can play as well in the US as I can
in Singapore,” Nicholas said. “Perhaps I can land a spot in a college golf team and earn a scholarship.”

SWIMMING Sports School Duo Headed To Hawaii Singapore National Swimming Championships
Singapore Sports School will have two representatives at the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming
Championships after Maximillian Ang Wei and Ryan Wee Wei Hao met the “A” qualifying marks at the
Singapore National Swimming Championships.
Maximillian will be swimming in the 400m Individual Medley after clocking a personal best time of
4:33.26s to secure his spot. He will also be competing in the 200m IM.
“I am very excited and looking forward to the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. I am
especially keen to see how I will fare against my peers from the region,” said Maximillian.
Meanwhile, post-secondary student-athlete Ryan will also be racing in two events at the Junior Pan
Pacific Championships. He booked his ticket to Hawaii after clocking in a personal best time of 4:07.11s
in the 200m Freestyle. His time was good enough to see him qualify for the 4x200m Freestyle Relay as
well.
Singapore last sent swimmers to the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championship, an U18 swim meet, in
2005. All members of that 11-strong contingent, which included Sports School alumnus Ho Shu Yong,
went on to represent Singapore at various multi-sport Games.
The Singapore National Swimming Championships was also a good meet for post-secondary student-
athlete Benedict Boon Ji Chao. He was presented with the Most Valuable Swimmer Award after winning
the 200m Freestyle and 400m Freestyle events on top of his two bronze medals from the 50m Freestyle
and 100m Freestyle races.
Altogether, 36 swimmers from the Sports School won 4 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals, while setting
73 personal best times and 2 school records at the OCBC Aquatic Centre from 24 to 26 June 2016.

potential to go far,” she said.
Altogether, our student-athletes returned with 2 silver and 4 bronze medals and 4 personal best times.
Even though they were competing against older athletes and facing a strong head wind, our student-

Visit By MOE Malaysia
Singapore Sports School Principal, Mr Tan Teck Hock, hosted a 23-strong delegation of educators from
Malaysia on 15 July 2016.
Our guests included Mr Zainal Abas, Deputy Director (Sports Division), Madam Lucia Quek, Senior
Principal Assistant Director, Assistant Directors Mr Mohamad Nizam Ismail, Mr Sahrul Tahiri, Madam
Fauziah Ahmad, Madam Wan Ruslina Wan Hussin and principals from the various states of Malaysia.
The schools headed by the visiting principals are strong in sports such as archery, basketball, cycling,
football, hockey, judo, netball, rugby, sepak takraw, swimming and track and field, and the discussions
the principals had with our sports academies’ general managers proved to be interesting and beneficial
for both hosts and visitors.
Our guests saw how lessons were conducted at our IB Centre, toured the sports facilities, and had the
opportunity to watch bowlers, fencers, netballers and shooters at training. They also toured the NYSI
Hub @ Sports School and were briefed on how sport science supports high performance athletes. Their
visit ended with the experience of eating the same lunch as our student-athletes.
