Energy can MOVEMOVE from one place to another (like lightning)!

This is called Energy TRANSFERTRANSFER

Energy always transfers to a place that has LESSLESS energy.

Think of it like sharing: giving energyto a place that doesn’t have as much.

The ice has LESS thermal energy, so the drink TRANSFERSTRANSFERS energy to the ice, causing it to melt!

There are 3 ways to TRANSFERTRANSFER energy:

1) Conduction = energy transferred by touching

The fork will conduct electricity when it touches the outlet.

Page 5: EnergyTransfer. MOVE Energy can MOVE from one place to another (like lightning)! TRANSFER This is called Energy TRANSFER.

2) Radiation = energy transferred without touching

The fire’s thermal energy is radiatingout to warm the room

Page 6: EnergyTransfer. MOVE Energy can MOVE from one place to another (like lightning)! TRANSFER This is called Energy TRANSFER.

3) Convection = energy transferred when heat rises, then cools in a circular motion.

You can burn your hand from puttinga metal stick in the candle flame.

Conduction because you wereactually touching it.

Page 9: EnergyTransfer. MOVE Energy can MOVE from one place to another (like lightning)! TRANSFER This is called Energy TRANSFER.

Getting an X-ray

Radiation, because it doesn’t touch you

Page 10: EnergyTransfer. MOVE Energy can MOVE from one place to another (like lightning)! TRANSFER This is called Energy TRANSFER.

It is hotter in your attic and upstairsthan it is downstairs.

Convection because the heat is rising, while the cool falls.

Page 11: EnergyTransfer. MOVE Energy can MOVE from one place to another (like lightning)! TRANSFER This is called Energy TRANSFER.

Lightning burning a tree

Conduction because it touches the tree

Page 12: EnergyTransfer. MOVE Energy can MOVE from one place to another (like lightning)! TRANSFER This is called Energy TRANSFER.

Getting cooked from the inside out by an atomic bomb

Radiation because you aren’t touching the bomb

Page 13: EnergyTransfer. MOVE Energy can MOVE from one place to another (like lightning)! TRANSFER This is called Energy TRANSFER.

Water boiling in a pot

Convection because the heat risesand cools in a circular motion.

Page 14: EnergyTransfer. MOVE Energy can MOVE from one place to another (like lightning)! TRANSFER This is called Energy TRANSFER.

Cooking in the microwave

Radiation because nothing actuallytouches your food.

Page 15: EnergyTransfer. MOVE Energy can MOVE from one place to another (like lightning)! TRANSFER This is called Energy TRANSFER.

Static shock from a doorknob

Conduction because you had to touch the doorknob

Page 16: EnergyTransfer. MOVE Energy can MOVE from one place to another (like lightning)! TRANSFER This is called Energy TRANSFER.

Toasting (not burning) a marshmellow

Radiation because no touching

Lava lamp bubbling

Convection, because the heat ofthe lightbulb makes the bubbles rise and fall in a circle.
