TECHNOLOGY REVIEW

• While designing the cold storages we

should optimize the heat load.

• Selection of Proper Equipments

• More Knowledge & useful experience will

be needed about emerging technologies to

raise the level of best practice.

EQUIPMENT RUNNING TIME

In Refrigeration applications the total coolingload is usually calculated for a 24-hourperiod. Because of the necessity ofdefrosting the evaporator at frequentintervals, it is not practical to design therefrigerating system in such a way that theequipment must operate continuously inorder to handle the load. In most cases, theair passing over the cooling coil is chilled toa temperature below its dew point, andmoisture is condensed out of the air onto thesurface of the cooling coil.

Page 14: ENERGY SAVINGS IN COLD STORAGE INSTALLATIONSashraeindia.org/pdf/Energy_Savings.pdf · WHY WE NEED TO CONSERVE ENERGY •Increasing cost of energy •Shortage of Electrical Energy

When the temperature of the coil surface is above the freezing temperature water, the moisture condensed out of temperature of water, the moisture condensed out of the air drains off the coil into the condensate pan and leaves the space through the condensate drain. When the moisture condensed onto the surface of the cooling coil, causing frost on the cooling surface tends to insulate the coil and reduce the capacity of the cooling coil. The frost must be melted off by defrosting the coil, it requires a certain amount of time during which the refrigerating effect must be stopped in the coil being defrosted.

CONCLUSIONTo save energy the following practices must be

implemented.

1. Reducing Heat Loads

2. Uses of latest energy saving equipments

3. Proper Insulation

4. Efficient maintenance practices

5. Automation & Integration

6. Good Training

7. R&D

8. Energy Audit should be mandatory for cold

storages
