The existing school currently has more pre-fabricated temporary classrooms than permanent classrooms. Client Brief: The brief was to provide three permanent classrooms for 75 students and staff to a high energy efficient standard with low maintenance requirements. Outcome: Young Design Build adopted the Passiv Haus standard for the project and successfully delivered a state of the art building which centred on providing a conducive learning environment for the schools students. This was achieved by surpassing current building standards using proven green building practices and the following building principles: • External Envelope: Highly insulated floor slab, external walls & roof providing u-values less than 0.15 (current building standards require a u-value of 0.27). • Window System: Triple glazed aluminium clad timber windows with an overall u-value less than 0.90 (current systems have u-values in the region of 1.1 to 1.4). • Air Tightness: Often overlooked in new buildings, but air tightness is curcial to keeping the warmth inside and the cold outside maximising the benefits of solar gain. This is achieved using high quality air tightness products which are carefully installed to ensure their effectiveness. • Mechanical Ventilation: As the building envelope is completely air tight the air inside the classrooms needs to be changed using Heat Recovery Ventilation. Stale air is extracted using low voltage fans within a complex unit which recovers the latent heat and transfers it to the fresh filtered air being delivered into the classrooms. • Flooring: A Polished concrete floor has been used to provide a maintanence free flooring solution within the classroom.
