When it comes to the 20% saving of EU primary energy consump-tion, the EU Commission’s recently published Energy Efficiency Plan 2011 estimates that the EU will achieve only half of the 20% objective. The result is that the EU needs stricter decisions and tools to achieve its target. One of the measures is that the EU will recommend that Member States develop incentives for compa-nies to introduce an energy management system.

A study done by the German Federal Environmental Agency states that energy efficiency measures often allow the organization to achieve only short term reductions of their energy consumption. This is due to a lack of continual observation of the energy con-sumption, as well as not having any long term energy efficiency strategies. Basically said, there is no systematic approach to efficiently use the resource “Energy”. An energy management system provides the opportunity to tackle exactly those issues within an organization.

Quo vadis, energy management? The introduction of efficient energy management systems fulfills an important requirement, regardless of business sector. It also assists with systematically developing energy savings potential in any organization, and to implement suitable measures. In addition to demonstrable cost savings, this also results in a permanent reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. An energy man-agement system furthermore provides corporate management with surety for decision making and credibility of their efforts in the areas of economical, ecological, and social responsibility.

ISO 50001 and EN 16001Since the publication of ISO 50001 in June 2011, and the lately recognition of the ISO 50001 as a European Standard by the CEN, there are currently two standards available for the certifica-tion of an energy management system, the requirements of which are mainly the same. It is expected that ISO 50001 will replace EN 16001 in the medium term, following a suitable transition period. In so far, ISO 50001 can be seen as the next stage of EN 16001 and a further development of the energy management system approach.

Carbon Footprint – an overview of developments and standardsThe public conceives climate change to be the single most critical environmental problem today. Companies address this issue and develop climate protection strate-gies that include the issue of CO2; first, to avoid its emission and second, where this is not entirely possible, to reduce them as much as possible. Only then may the rest be compensated for. To do that, companies first need to conduct a detailed analysis of their entire GHG emissions, as well as any savings potential. They may follow ISO 14067 Carbon Footprints of Products in that, which is due for publication in spring 2012. Depending on the approach chosen, this analysis records not only the company’s own emissions, but also those of suppliers, processed materials, and semi-finished goods. Various models are available to choose from: The GHG Protocol Initiative has issued two new international standards for calculat-ing GHG emissions, either along a company’s value adding chain (Corporate ValueChain Standard) or along the product’s life cycle (Product Life Cycle Standard). Either standard provides a comprehensive approach to making transparent a company’s or product’s CO2 Footprint, to include all direct and indirect emissions.

BSI (British Standards Institution) has revised and updated PAS 2050 (Publicly Available Specification) in order to harmonize the approach, using the methods used in the GHG Protocol Product Standard and ISO 14067. It allows for the record-ing of GHG emissions throughout the life cycle of products and services.

ISO 14064 – GHG Emission Inventory Verification and Validation

Climate change is widely considered one of mankind’s great-est threats, which is why governments around the world and industry have set a target to achieve reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) missions. An essential aspect of this is data reliabil-ity in goal setting and emission reduction. ISO 14064 standard is committed to improving the credibility of GHG emissions reporting and assurance, to allow companies to turn good GHG emission values into competitive advantages. Anyone involved in emissions trading, voluntary emission reduction projects or organization can use these standards. ISO 14064 is applicable to all types of GHG, and not limited to carbon dioxide.

ISO 14064 consists of three standards: ISO 14064-1 Specification with guidance at the organiza-

tion level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals

ISO 14064-2 Specification with guidance at the project level for quantification, monitoring and reporting of green-house gas emission reductions or removal enhancements

ISO 14064-3 Specification with guidance for the validation and verification of greenhouse gas assertions

These standards can be used as stand-alone, or they can be integrated for different greenhouse gases (GHG) inventory verification/validation requirements.

The advantages of a certification to ISO 14064 are: demonstrate commitment foster internal improvement establish confidence ensure your future monitor implementation add credibility

Introducing ISO 26000

The latest International Standard ISO 26000:2010 – Guidance on Social Responsibility, was launched recently by SPRING Singapore at a seminar to introduce the new standard to the business community.

What is ISO 26000ISO 26000 provides social responsibility guidance for all types of organisations, such as MNCs and big corporations, SMEs, non-governmental organisations and government agencies.

As the world moves towards an age of radical transparency, or-ganisations and stakeholders become increasingly aware of the need for socially and environmentally responsible behaviour. ISO 26000 is thus a timely and relevant guide to help organisations understand what social responsibility is and what they need to do to operate in a socially responsible way.ISO 26000 is not for certification.

It is important to note that ISO 26000 contains voluntary guid-ance and is not for use as a certification standard like ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. It is stressed in the guidance that:

ISO 26000 is not a management system standard. It is not in-tended or appropriate for certification purposes or regulatory or contractual use. Any offer to certify, or claims to be certified, to ISO 26000 would be a misrepresentation of the intent and pur-pose and a misuse of this International Standard. As ISO 26000 does not contain requirements, any such certification would not be a demonstration of conformity with this International Standard.

However, one of the speakers at the seminar, Assistant Professor Eugene Tan, Member of the National Working Group on Social Responsibility and Lecturer in SMU’s School of Law, said that ISO 26000 could evolve into a de facto technical standard and or-ganisations may be required by business partners to demonstrate that they “endorse” or “support” ISO 26000. He pointed out that Denmark has introduced its own national standard – DS 26001 that is based on ISO 26000 and is certifiable.

ISO 26000 – the international guideline to CSRPublished in November 2010 after five years of development by specialists from 91 countries and 42 organizations, Guideline ISO 26000 summarizes the up-to-then current variety of standards for Social Responsibility and Sustainability into one, defining i.a. consumer issues, environmental protection and work practices as core subjects of social responsibility. Particular consideration was given to the ILO Guidelines (International Labour Organization), the UN Global Compact, and the Guidelines of OECD and GRI (Global Reporting Initiative). ISO 26000 is internationally applicable for the implementation and further development of management systems, but is not subject to certification itself. The basics of the guideline can be summed up in seven core subjects and seven principles:

Basics for certificationCurrently, organizations may choose between the following national standards as basis for their certification: ONR 192500 (Austria), RS 10 (Spain), or DS 26001 (Denmark).

ISO 26000. This international standard has been drawn up as a set of guidelines and is not certifiable. Consequently, DQS examined and inspected conformity with the core topics of ISO 26000 and issued the certification according to the Austrian ONR 192500 regulations, as well as the Spanish RS 10 specification, as both have implemented the contents and core topics of ISO 26000 as a certifiable manage-ment system.

From the beginning, all participants were aware of the particular challenge at the heart of this audit, which was to make the organization’s well-established and internalized processes transparent to inde-pendent third parties. Starting conditions couldn’t have been much better, since HARTING already employs high-perfor-mance management systems in the areas of workplace health and safety, quality, and environment. Now, as the auditors found out during three visits on-site this spring and summer, they also employ a management system that demonstrates their commitment to social responsibility. The assessment was in part accompanied by Dr. Karl Gruen, who, in his capacity as Director for Development at the Austrian Institute for Standardization, signed respon-sible for the development of ONR 192500.

CSR Management System of HARTING Group certified successfully

HARTING Technology Group recently had their management system for the aware-ness and assumption of societal responsibility certified by DQS. With this pilot pro-ject, the two companies continue their successful partnership, which started with the first IRIS certification in Germany in the year 2006.

By subjecting social responsibility to an audit process, DQS and HARTING once again set a new benchmark. The two DQS auditors Matthias Paersch and Fred Wenke com-menced their work in spring 2010 already and were given comprehensive insight into processes and strategies. In the end, they were able to confirm that four HARTING group companies already fulfill the requirements and recommendations for social responsibility. In assuming societal responsibility the HARTING Technology Group orients its position on

Cardboard Engineering at HARTING: the prototype of a workstation is modeled with cardboard boxes and improved until it is fully compatible with the worker’s natural flow of movement, as well as the qualitative requirements of the process.

It was particularly the constructive at-mosphere and openness of employees talking about their areas of responsibility that impressed the auditors. In the case of HARTING, both thought and action go far beyond purely economic aspects: work stations, for example, are first adjusted to the needs of staff members using cardboard engineering. In this, a proto-type of the work station is modeled using cardboard boxes and improved until all process requirements have been met. This approach of step-by-step improvement was also followed in the construction of the electroplating testing shop, in order to make use of actual applications for the optimization of processes. Other in-house measures, such as the HARTING Idea Management or awards for successful im-provement processes within the context of the HARTING Learning and Improvement System (HARTlis) augment and enhance the course of continuous improvement.

The auditors quickly agreed that both the consistent implementation of identified improvement potential, as well as the interlocking of internal measures is exem-plary and leads to a high level of identi-fication with the corporate strategy and objectives. Says Dietmar Harting, person-ally liable partner: “In our last staff survey, our employees once again expressed their pride in being able to work at HARTING. Such a degree of identification is very im-portant to us as a family-owned business, and we treat the trust we are given with utmost care. After all, the values at stake here are our credibility and attractiveness as a technological company.”

7

no.65

Credibility is the basis for trustful partner-ships with customers, employees, suppli-ers, and the public. In obtaining the certi-fication on societal responsibility HARTING is primarily concerned with taking account of increasing customer demands for ethi-cally correct behavior in the supply and value creation chain in the best possible manner. In view of the multitude of indi-vidual customer behavior codices and the high time and cost input required for the specific individual implementation, HART-ING regards the certification as an active step towards further improving customer care and focus. Dietmar Harting sum-marizes: “Most organizations make do with a self-declaration to demonstrate their awareness of societal responsibility. But that was not good enough for us; we regard auditing by an independent third party as an appropriate approach.“

With this project, both partners, HARTING and DQS, have entered new territory and taken an initial step in the direction of better transparency among all partners in terms of societal responsibility. Both part-ners are aware of the fact that this is the beginning of a long road. Like every other process, establishing socially responsible ways of acting successfully will only be possible through continuous improvement. Consequently, DQS will once again be a guest at HARTING in 2012 in order to audit the developments and progress at the HARTING Technology Group.

New offices in Belarus and Azerbaijan

With these two new offices, DQS-UL Group rapidly continues their path of expanding the international network. The new offices, which commenced operations at the end of August this year, particularly strengthen the group’s presence in the Near East and Eastern Europe.

The region between the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus moun-tains has been the recipient of the highest number of foreign direct investment for many years now – a factor that had also led to an increased demand for certified management system. Azerbaijan has grown into one of the European Union’s significant trading partners, both as a strategically important supplier of en-ergy and for their agricultural products. “We see a lot of interest in establishing quality, environmental, and workplace safety as-pects in one integrated management system, “characterizes the managing director of the new office, Boris Shetinkin, the market in Azerbaijan. Mr. Shetinkin has been working in the certification of management systems for many years before establishing DQS Azerbaijan LLC in the nation’s capital Baku, and he is an experi-enced auditor. After going through one crisis after the other, Belarus is looking to stabilize their economy by focusing on international standards for quality and the environment. Since the year 2009, when foreign trade between Belarus and Germany almost ceased to exist, eco-nomic relations have started to pick up again for both countries. For Alexander Nikititsch, managing director of the newly founded DEKUES Bel. Ltd. in Minsk, this development is reflected in an increasing interest of the domestic industry, as well as German investors, for management system certification. Most of the de-mand in Belarus focuses on certificates according to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and BS OHSAS 18001, as well as standards for the

During their visit to the DQS-UL Group headquarters in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, both Shetinkin and Nikititsch agree on the “deeply felt respect for German quality” in each of their respective countries – reason enough for both of them to become a partner and to represent DQS-UL Group in the former GUS member states.

At the control center, ensuring the safe operation of spaceflight enjoys the highest priority, because unscheduled measures not only result in extremely high costs, the also present a security risk. Particularly the matter of gap-free documentation of the evidence chain for all conducted actions presents a particular challenge, which will now be facilitated by the certified Informa-tion Security Management System (ISMS). Subject of this cer-tification is the establishment and implementation of the ISMS for the operations of earth observation satellites. This includes servers, networks, network components and workstations of the German Space Operations Center and all other relevant support processes.

The implementation of ISO 27001 compliant ISMS includes the rollout of technical protection measures, such as access control concepts, and the implementation of organizational and personnel measures in an integrated manner. Most outstanding is the full integration of the ISMS in the operational processes as well as of the existing ISO 9001 certified management processes right from the beginning.

Space Operations and Astronaut Training – made safer with ISO 27001 DQS certifies the German Space Operations Center of DLR

On 19 September 2011, the German Space Operations Center GSOC, part of the German Aerospace Center DLR, received their certificate according to ISO 27001. In June 2011, GSOC introduced a level of security in DLR which is unique in the branch of spaceflight control centers.

Since 1969 the Space Operation of the German Aerospace Center DLR has been successfully operating space flight missi-ons. During more than 60 missions with different applications DLR demonstrated its competence in operating spacecraft of all kinds. Scientific satellites, for example, which are used for earth observation, are being controlled and monitored in the flexible and reliable multi-mission environment of the satellite control center in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. From here, seve-ral satellites can be handled by one team working in one con-trol room. To this end, the management of DLR Space Opera-tions and Astronaut Training has prepared a so-called guideline. It specifically governs the aspects of “organizational security”, “personnel security”, and “technical security” as they relate to the areas of IT, physical security, and protection of secrecy and from sabotage. The aim is to achieve certain security goals: all

DLR is Germany‘s national research center for aero-nautics and space. Its extensive research and develop-ment work in aeronautics, space, transportation and energy is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures. As Germany‘s Space Agency, the German federal government has given DLR responsi-bility for the forward planning and implementation of the German space programme as well as international representation of Germany‘s interests. Approximately 6,900 people work for DLR; the center maintains 33 institutes as well as test and operating facilities, and has 13 sites.

DLR Space Operations (RB) is the central institution for spaceflight operations in Germany. This responsi-bility includes satellite missions for Earth observation, communication and reconnaissance missions as well as for the exploration of the solar system and human spaceflight missions. Furthermore, astronauts are trained, space experiments are prepared and sounding rockets are developed and launched from sites around the world.

Awareness” has been published, which includes important advice for the correct handling of infor-mation, and instructions for employees in space control operations. This results in an increased level of security awareness for each staff member.

Analysis and next stepsThe management of DLR space operations center and astronaut training sees a clear competitive ad-vantage in their ISMS certificate, and applies the management system as a tool for process optimi-zation. An increase in legal and process certainty turns risks into success factors. The ISMS will be

further developed and deepened during ongoing operations, for example by:

Structural, technical, and organizational implementation of a comprehensive, physical zone concept (new process and technically new and much enlarged system for access con-trol, as well as the alarm tracking of the intrusion detection system)

The conduct of measures for increasing awareness The optimization of costing and offers for new projects as

sensitive information, data, IT systems and IT resources shall be protected according to their pre-defined protection level, so that only the following activities are possible:

Authorized access and publication (security goal: confidentiality)

 Authorized modifications (security goal: integrity)

Authorized deletions or disruptions (security goal: availability)

These aims also include legal requirements and constraints. At the same time, the necessary framework is created to allow the employees concerned, as well as sub-contractors and other partners to know, understand, and adhere to the organization’s guideline for information security. ArcelorMittal Tubarão“We do not limit ourselves to just accomplish the ISO requirements. We try going further, in pursuit of excellence. The compliance certification is not an end itself, but proof of the efficiency of our Quality Management System”, says ArcelorMittal’s Project & Technical Vice President, Mr. Claudio Borges. The Quality Management System here implemented exceeds the ISO 9001 requirements and represents one of the pillars for the company’s good results.

One of the significant aspects in choosing DQS as their certification partner was the great amount of certified companies by DQS in the auto industry (ISO/ TS 16949) and the certifications in the other companies of the group, like ArcelorMittal Bremen (BS OHSAS 18001) and ArcelorMittal South Africa (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and BS OHSAS 18001). True confirmation of the partnership with DQS was found during the preliminary negotiation meetings, when both companies realized they share a common Quality Management System philosophy.

After the decision for partnership was made, a strict planning was arranged for the execution of an integrated audit of the three management systems (Quality, Environment and Health & Safety), which was then carried out in fifteen days with the participation of a team of six auditors from DQS do Brasil.

The strategy of ArcelorMittal is guided by sustainability in all respects, which is why more than 750 million US Dollars have been invested in equipment for environmental control systems. The company is proud to state that not only are their performance indicators for Health and Safety among the best in the world, but that they also achieve top performance in many environmental aspects. Their residues reusing index generated over the steelmaking process reached 99.4% in 2010, and their

freshwater industrial consumption rates is one of the lowest in Brazil, due to a high recirculation index. They have achieved total energy self-sufficiency by being able to produce 112% of the energy needed for production from process gas recovery with no combustible oil consumption.

Because ArcelorMittal Tubarão is aiming to increase their participation in the auto industry, they are currently implementing a management system to ISO/TS 16949. Certification is expected in August 2012. The company also holds certifications for the structural application of its products for the European community and for Marine Industry Applications.

ArcelorMittal Tubarão is a specialized company in semi-finished steel products (slabs and hot-rolled coils) for the national and international market. The company is located strategically in the Vitoria Metropolitan Area, State of Espirito Santo, in the Southeast of Brazil. With more than 4.000 direct employees, ArcelorMittal has a production capacity of 7.5 million tons of steel per year, being 3.5 million tons of slabs, 2.6 million tons of hot-rolled coils and 1.4 million tons of hot-rolled coils that are supplied to ArcelorMittal Vega, which produces cold-rolled coils and galvanized products. ArcelorMittal was the first world steel manufacturer to commercialize carbon credits according to the Kyoto agreement in 2009 and is still developing new ways to add value to its products.

DQS speaks at Social Responsibility Conference in El SalvadorGünter Schranz, managing director of DQS El Salvador, was invited to participate as main lecturer in the conference “Corporate Social Responsibility in Central America and the Caribbean”. The conference was hosted by the well-known business magazine “Mercados y Tendencias”, where Mr. Schranz is an occasional contributor in the area of quality, standards, and related matters. In his presentation entitled “CSR: crucial factor for the future of organizations”, the experienced SA 8000* auditor stressed the importance of this subject in big markets such as the United States and the European Union. The consumers there continue to seek exotic products that are manufactured in Central America, Africa and Asia, but also pay more and more attention to the conditions under which employees work in these countries.

Consequently, they will not buy from suppliers and importers who do not comply with these standards.” Mr. Schranz also referred to business continuity issues when he stated that “a company that is prepared for any external negative influence can handle a crisis and continue; the key is to have a good emergency plan and companies that do will not change management systems such as Social Responsibility.” DQS El Salvador has identified Corporate Social Responsibility as being of increasing importance in the entire Central American region and therefore targets these and other services also across country borders.

*SA 8000 is a global social accountability standard for decent working conditions, developed and overseen by Social Accountability International (SAI).

The event was attended by nearly two hundred and fifty leading enterprise representa-tives. In addition to the man-aging director of DQS Holding Company, DQS-UL Group, Mr. Stefan Heinloth, and represen-tatives of group offices in the region, there was also the Vice General Manager of UL-CCIC, UL, Mr. Shi Jun and Hou Lanxi, Director of the IQNet partner

CQM Shanghai sub-center. OEMs from Europe and America had sent their representatives in China, so that together with self-owned brand representatives, the world‘s ten largest automotive parts companies were in attendance. This was rounded off by representatives from the chemical, semiconductor electronics, rail transportation, aviation, medical equipment, and optical equipment, as well as environment, energy management, and corporate social responsibility management experts.

The conference was divided into two parts. The first part was key-note speeches held by representatives of companies and industry experts. Mr. Stefan Heinloth addressed the forum on the subject of “Quality wins - development strategy of management system certification”, where he described the future development trends of companies not only limited to the areas of quality manage-ment, but with an increased concern about environment, energy and sustainable development. He also introduced the concept of low-carbon emission reduction, which is an imperative business development direction for the next three to five years.

Mr. Zhu Zhaoyi, then went on to brief the participants on the cur-rent status following the transfer of the management system cer-tification business of UL-CCIC to DQS AP (Shanghai) on April 1, 2011. Now DQS-UL AP is in charge of realizing the full integration of DQS-UL management system certification business in China. Customer held management system certificate issued by UL-CCIC will maintain their validity. Mr. Zhu and the team of DQS-UL AP are confident that the newly integrated DQS-UL AP will result in improved customer service in China.

One of the key areas where DQS-UL AP sees an increasing need for solutions is that of so-cial responsibility, environmen-tal protection, and sustainable development. The growing lack of resources, combined with population growth, gave rise to a speech by Mr. Zhu on the pressing issue of “Corporate Social Responsibility”. DQS-UL, an IQNet global certification mutual alliance member, issued the world’s first CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) certificate to HARTING Holding on 2011 July 7th. DQS-UL AP will also provide certification services in this new field based on customer requirements.

Ryukichi Inoue, the managing director of DQS-UL Japan, also attended the meeting, and brought with him a presentation on “The new problems facing Japanese manufacturers after the earthquake”. Problems include enterprises that have ceased production, sluggish sales, supply chains out of line, etc. To solve these problems, Japanese companies must adjust their strategic direction, and among other things embark on overseas investment, increase foreign purchases of parts and raw materials, set up production sites in emerging countries, etc. This brings with it more opportunities for companies in neighboring China, as well as to provide more opportunities for business dealings with Japanese companies.

It was with great pleasure that DQS-UL AP was able to welcome the SAIC senior manager for SQE, Mr. Zhang Jianming, who gave a presentation on “SAIC Supplier Quality Standards” and described “The supply chain management idea and quality requirement to supplier of OEM”. The objective of stronger supplier management requirements is to establish self-owned brands and a good quality basic, as well as to improve process quality. It reflects the core competitiveness of self-owned brands and offers a display stage to suppliers where they can transfer from manufacture to creation, while at the same time improving their ability as self-owned brand suppliers.

DQS-UL AP hosts Supply Chain Management System Forum and Customer ConferenceThe aim of this conference was to provide a communication stage for old and new customers, to introduce latest technolo-gies and to strengthen business communication. Zhu Zhaoyi, Managing Director of DQS-UL Asia Pacific (AP) summarized the aim of this customer event when he says: “We want to get together with our customer at all times in order to accom-plish common development and improvement.”

“We obtained a lot in the DQS-UL customer meeting in 2011. As en-vironmental pollution was a serious issue at present, we hoped to join in and get to know about the know-ledge of low-carbon environmental protection, energy saving and reduc-tion emission, especially how to cal-culate the emission of CO2. Besides, we focused on how to improve busi-ness mode of development tendency about future automotive career.”GETRAG (Jiangxi) Transmission Co., Ltd.

“Our company took priority in deve-lopment strategy, corporate social responsibility and modern company sustainable development, so we knew and learned a lot. Besides, to face management cost and market changing requirement, company hoped to be offered simple and ef-fective quality management system. I also hope that annual audit could emphasize the principle of simple and effective management system in addition to finding improved opportunities.” Fujikura Zhuhai Co., Ltd.

“I was satisfied with every aspect from hardware to software and the meeting offered a platform to communicate with colleagues. The lectures were covered about some problems we were concerned, such as the development tendency of management system certification, chain management in automotive career and suppliers facing custo-mers’ characteristic requirement. I hoped there would be lots of oppor-tunities to share experience in the near future.”Dynacast (Shanghai) Ltd.

The Manager of GSMC, Mr. Ni Lida, shared their CSR practical experience with other rep-resentatives. GSMC is an advanced IC production enterprise that is devoted to improve quality of environment, safety and health. They invited experts to design environmental protection agency, air supply system and recycling resource that meet GSMC’s self-char-acteristic, thereby establishing energy saving, lean production control, “green enterprise” and a good example in the industry.

Doctor Ma Hongbo is a quality management expert, registered quality management system trainer, ASQ registered six sigma black band, and senior auditor in quality, environment and occupational health management system as well as VDA 6.1, and TS 16949) and gave a keynote speech on the “General requirement for management system certification“. Doctor Ma conducted a one-by-one analysis and explanation of the all that must be obeyed during the certification process, in order to reduce risk and achieve effectiveness. In addition Dr. Ma also highlighted the „Measure for the Administration of Certification Body“ that was officially implemented on September 1, 2011. This government measure contains even stricter requirements for certification bodies, comparing to the previous regulation, with more detailed requirements for certification activities as well. Certification bodies and the companies must understand and implement this new regulation, to ensure the legitimacy and effectiveness of certification activities.

In the afternoon, attendants were divided into three discussion groups, where each en-terprise representative invited communication and questions on the subject of 2nd party certification, sustainable development, or challenges for electronic industry. The confer-ence closed with an open round of discussions among the participants, which agreed that they had all harvested a lot in such as short day. Not only do they, the customers, know more about DQS-UL now, but good connections had been established among the participants of the face to face forum. Together, let’s look forward to the next convention. The members of the marketing department of DQS-UL AP were also happy to be part of the meeting, and to have the opportunity to further face-to-face communication. Learning about customer internal situations and requirements will certainly benefit and advance business. After the closing meeting, customers took advantage of the opportu-nity to continue to discuss with each other and share their experiences, and to talk with auditors over their problems and solutions. That in itself exemplifies the significance of holding such a customer meeting.

Welding: the focus moves towards ISO 3834

New certification requirements for ISO 20000-1 New IQNet Standard for Corporate Social Responsibility

The SR 10 is a specification created by IQNet, which defines the requirements that must be met in a Social Responsibility Management System whose aim is to satisfy stakeholders and fulfil social responsibility policies and objectives. It is currently one of the best and most complete tools for incorporating social responsibility in the value chain of organisations and for managing it systematically. The PDCA model, the fact that its structure is nearly identical to ISO 9001 and its compatibility with other management systems enable SR 10 to be implemented in a manner that is both comparable to other systems and fully integrated. The standard will be available free-of-charge in .pdf format at https://de.dqs-ul.com.

Jan-Ingo Boege leaves DQS GmbH management team

DQS GmbH regrets to announce that one of their managing directors, Mr. Jan-Ingo Boege, has resigned his management du-ties for health reasons. Michael Drechsel, now sole managing director of DQS GmbH (a member of DQS-UL Group), expressed his appreciation for Mr. Boege’s technical and personal competence and his com-mitment to DQS, in particular with respect to his cooperation during the last two years of managing DQS GmbH together. With the continued support of the division managers, Michael Drechsel will continue to manage DQS GmbH as sole MD, in ad-dition to his duties at DQS Holding GmbH.

Certification business news

For any manufacturers of welded products, e.g. for the construction of machines, cranes, agricultural or other welded equip-ment, ISO 3834 “Quality Requirements for Fusion Welding of Metallic Materials” will soon be the only available standard. DIN 18800 will disappear from the market and be replaced by EN 1090, which in its new version will only reference the construction sector itself. For any others, ISO 3834 is the easiest and most advantageous way to include the particular process of welding into an existing quality management system to ISO 9001, because of their many similarities.

The standard consists of four parts, with ISO 3834-1 containing the generic de-scriptions, while ISO 3834-2 through 4 address particular levels. Companies undergoing assessment to ISO 9001 by DQS may choose to include ISO 3834 in the assessment, as well. If your business includes welding, and quality assurance is your concern, ISO 3834 will be the road to design those processes more safely. For more information, please contact your local DQS-UL office.

By 2013 at the latest, all organizations offering professional service management must be certified to revised standard ISO 20000-1:2011. This requires good prepa-ration and training, in order to be able to evaluate the changed requirements exactly and to implement the necessary steps for their implementation, both for internal auditing and certification.

Until now, certification was conducted based on ISO 20000-1 from the year 2005, which in this form remains valid un-til 31 May, 2012. After that, organizations must transition to the new version ISO 20000-1:2011. The new ISO standard, entitled “Information technology -- Service management -- Part 1: Service manage-ment system requirements”, now opens its doors for all service management provid-ers, no longer focusing exclusively on IT service providers, as was the case till now.

Any organization wishing to be certified from now on will have to be familiar with the new requirements. To this end, a

working group was established to analyze the differences between the two versions exactly. The time table calls for this delta analysis to be completed by the end of October, 2011. By the end of this year, all assessments to be performed in 2012 should be initialized, and the organizations should be given a guideline addressing the changes. At the same time, the delta analysis is an excellent opportunity to look into the current service management system in a comprehensive manner.

The changes to the Change and Service Level Management process are already available. As soon as the delta analysis has been finalized, which should be the end of October 2011, DQS will notify their customers and be able to offer them a suitable, high-quality certification proce-dure. For organizations already certified, DQS currently estimates an extra expendi-ture of 1.5 audit days for the transition.
