What are our main energy sources?
Industrialised countries need largeamounts of energy
Most of this energy comes formfossil fuels which are burnt in
power stations, factories, homesand vehicles
These fossil fuels formed millionsof years ago, and are non-
renewableOnce the fossil fuels have beenused up there will be no more toreplace them

Oil is useful for other things tooOil is a mixture of differentcompounds
We can separate thesesubstances by a processcalled fractional distillation
These fractions includefuels like petrol, diesel and
aviation fuelParts of oil are also used tomake plastics, medicines, paints, dyes and even waxcandles

Problems with burning fossil
fuelsHuge amounts of carbon dioxide are
given off into theatmosphere
Carbon dioxide causesglobal warming or thegreenhouse effect
coal-burning powerstations also give off sulphur dioxide gaswhich leads to acid
rain

What is the greenhouse effect?Carbon dioxide gas actslike the glass in agreenhouse
Infrared radiation fromthe Sun is usuallyreflected back intospace
Greenhouse gases stopthis, and heat isreflected back to theEarth again

What are the problems with global warming?
The averagetemperature of theEarth will rise
This can lead todroughts

Extremes of weather will occurhurricanes and
storms

The increase intemperature will
speed up themelting of thepolar ice caps

Global warmingwill therefore
lead to floods

So all this burning of
fossil fuels leadingto an Earth that issuffering form many
environmentalproblems

Other problems from the pollution from
burning fossil fuels:
Lead poisoning has been shown to affect thedevelopment and progress of children living near
motorwaysDust and gases in the air can lead to smog above largeindustrialised cities
A hole is developing in the ozone layer which thereforewill not filter out harmful ultra-violet rays from the Sun

We need to conserve our fossil fuels
The electricity we produce from burning fossilfuels could also be made using renewable
energy resourcesIt makes sense to save the oil we have leftfor making fuel for transport and for making
plasticsWe could try to save wasting energy fromfossil fuels during domestic use in our homesand from waste transport consumption of fuel

Alternative energy sources
Wind energy
Hydroelectric energy
Solar energy
Tidal energy
Nuclear energy
Geothermal energy
Biomass energy

Problems with nuclear fuelsNuclear power stations can producelarge amounts of energy from smallamounts of nuclear fuel. (Radioactive
materials naturally release heat)Nuclear radiation is extremelydangerous
High safety standards are needed
Waste materials stay radioactive forthousands of years
There have been some disastrousaccidents at nuclear power stationswhich have affected all living things in
the area

Write an article for a newspaper or
a magazine, outlining the need forenergy conservation
Plan:
Fossils fuels: uses
Fossil fuels : why we need to conserve them
Fossil fuels: problems of pollution
Alternative energy sources (advantages & disadvantages)
Problems with nuclear fuels
