School Sport Festival goes from strength to strength

Preparations are now well under way for the 2016 Winter Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival, which will be held on March 1st & 2nd at Shrewsbury Sports Village.

Nearly 2,000 primary and secondary pupils will be competing across 25 different sporting events. The event, part of the School Games programme, is co-ordinated by the county sports partnership Energize.

Will anyone be able to stop the East Shropshire region from claiming both the primary and secondary school honours again in 2016?

Harry Cade, Youth Sport Manager at Energize, said: “Those competing will have already beaten the best teams and individuals other schools in their area have to offer at the School Games level two competitions, and will be determined to do their best when representing their areas at the Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival.”

School Sport Festival continued…

The School Games programme within Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin also has its very own Youth Forum that meets on a monthly basis to help shape, create and organise aspects of the Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival.

Harry said: “The idea is that these festivals are, where possible, organised for young people by young people. This year’s Youth Forum is made up of 22 pupils from schools across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.”

As well as sporting opportunities, the School Games programme in Shropshire has been developing other cross-curricular competitions to ensure as many young people can engage with the programme as possible.

For example, the ‘School Games Has Got Talent’ competition to find amazing local talent that can perform at the opening ceremonies has gone from strength to strength and showcased some truly great acts. The deadline for entering the latest event is January 8, 2016.

There have also been flag designing competitions, Young Leadership awards and at the end of November, winners of a School Games writing competition had the opportunity to meet and talk with British tennis coach Judy Murray when she visited the Aegon championships in Shrewsbury.

A new Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival Mascot designing competition is also underway for this year.

School Games Youth Forum On the 19th November we (the School Games Youth Forum) met at Oldbury Wells secondary school in Bridgnorth. We have been organising our next steps as a team to help organise and arrange elements of the 2016 Shropshire Homes School Sport Festivals.

Our Culture Team have been thinking about the mascot competition which is currently taking place and how the 6 area winning designs will be judged at the Winter Festival as well as how best to keep promoting the ‘School Games Has Got Talent’ competition to gain acts for the opening ceremonies.

Team Athlete are looking at whether they could gain sponsors for resources such as bottled water, healthy snacks etc… If you know of any local Shropshire based businesses that would be willing to help out or would like further information, please contact Team Athlete via Harry Cade ([email protected]).

Please turnover for more..

School Games Youth Forum continued… Then there is us – Team Promotion. We’ve been looking into organising social media campaigns and linking with Team Culture for information and the deadline dates of the different competitions so we can help promote them.

For information about the ‘School Games Has Got Talent’ competition (deadline 8th January) and the Mascot Competition please click here.

We had our third meeting last week on the 10th December and as well as spending time in the classroom we were also joined by Ilona Loewnau the founder of ‘Shropshire Handball Foundry’ who put us through our paces as we got to grips with playing Handball. It was a great session and we’re looking forward to having Ilona come along to the Winter Festival on the 1st & 2nd March to provide those in attendance the opportunity to have a go at Handball.

Tip of the Month from Shropshire Wild Teams!

Simon from Shropshire Wild Team shares his tips to ‘keep on tracking.’

“With muddy paths it’s a good time to go out and find some animal tracks. To start off it might help to know the difference between a fox and a dog. If you can trace a horizontal line between the two front toes and the back toes without it touching either, it’s a fox. The line will cut through the toes of a dog print. Badger prints should show 4-5 toes in line just in front of the rear pad. The claw marks are slightly ahead of the toes. Badgers leave a distinct path of flattened vegetation or smoothed earth. Badger sett entrances are wider than they are high and fox and rabbit entrances are higher than wide. Rabbit entrances are relatively big but quickly narrow. Look around hazel stumps to find nuts. Dormice will leave a very neat smooth round hole to get inside. Bank Voles will leave teeth marks on the very inner edge of the hole while mice leave teeth marks on the inner edge as well as around it. Birds and Squirrels will crack open the nut leaving more jagged

irregular shapes.”

Do parents know how much exercise children really need?

New research by a Leeds Beckett University academic has revealed that parents don’t know how much physical activity their children need and are wrongly assuming that the amount of exercise children get at school is sufficient. The study involved focus groups with parents of children aged four to 16 years old. Guidelines recommend that children and young people engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day and vigorous intensity activities at least three days per week.

Whilst the parents recognised benefits to being physically active in childhood, they were confused about the intensity of activity necessary to gain the associated health outcomes and were generally unaware of the physical activity recommendations for children. View the full news item

Energize launches new crowdfunding opportunity!

Energize has launched a new innovative funding scheme for the benefit of those playing and involved in sport in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin. In association with Podium Partners, Energize want to help local young and disabled people to develop their potential and to be able to support clubs looking for new equipment or facilities. Energize offer the opportunity for the local community sports organisations and athletes to promote their campaign on the crowdfunding website, enabling them to raise funds by bringing their project to the attention of the wider public and businesses. Energize are now welcoming applications to register campaigns on the site which will benefit children and young people aged up to 25, disabled people of any age, or projects looking to help either of these two groups. The site will go live with all campaigns in January when it officially launches to the public. Please turnover for more!

This could convert every £10 donated to as much as £12.50. Chris Child, Chief Executive of Energize says “It’s a great new initiative and we have already had a really positive response from people who want to register their campaigns on the site. We would like to have a wide variety of campaigns, from a wide range of sports, ready to go live on the site ready for the main public launch in January and would encourage people to apply to register now.” To apply now and for more information email [email protected] or call 07917 236619 To apply to create a campaign please visit http://energizestw.podiumpartners.org/

National Obesity Awareness Week 11th – 17th Jan 2016

Just like everyone else, children and young people need to be eating healthily and physically active.

We’ve brought together some of the UK’s leading experts to offer their advice on how children and young people can be more active and eat healthily – picking up habits that will last a lifetime.

Healthy eating, right from the start

The earlier children start thinking of healthy living, the better. View HENRY’s 15-minute guide for parents on developing healthy eating habits with their children from a young age. You can view active play ideas from HENRY’s book, Healthy Families: Right from the Start with HENRY, to get children active from a young age to help develop the habit and increase the enjoyment they gain from it.

Physical activity guidelines for children and young people

The Chief Medical Officers' expert group on physical activity has developed an infographic which aims to present the physical activity recommendations for children and young people in a visual and comprehensible way. The group is now seeking feedback on the design of the infographic and would be grateful if you could spare some time to complete a short evaluation. Click here to view the infographic.
