Overview, Target Audience and Learner OutcomeELNEC-Pediatric Palliative Care (ELNEC-PPC) was adapted from the ELNEC-Core Curriculum in 2003. ELNEC-PPC was developed by 20 pediatric palliative care experts, who recognized the unique needs of children and their families. Since its inception in August 2003, more than fifteen national courses have been provided across the United States to date, along with six Association for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) collaborative courses. Over 1715 pediatric nurses and other healthcare providers have attended one of these national train-the-trainer courses. In 2009, the curriculum was up-dated to include enhanced perinatal and neonatal content.
Who should attend ELNEC-Pediatric Palliative Care?
• Undergraduate and graduate pediatric nursing faculty
• CE providers and staff development educators working in pediatric settings
• Hospice nurses
• Homecare nurses
• APRN/staff nurses working in pediatric acute care settings (i.e. oncology, medical/surgical, palliative care settings, NICU, PICU, clinics, etc.)
• Other members of the pediatric interdisciplinary team are welcome to attend, with the understanding that the curriculum is written by nurses for nurses.
This course was developed for healthcare professionals to provide a more thorough understanding of how the end of child’s life impacts families, friends and caregivers. The ten modules of this course will address different aspects of coping with a terminal illness and provide insights into the bereavement process. Attendees will be able to provide evidenced-based care for patients, as well as emotional and spiritual support to caregivers and survivors.
Course ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
• Describe the philosophy and principles of hospice and palliative care that can be integrated across settings to affect quality pediatric care.

• Identify barriers to adequate pain relief in palliative care and describe pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies used to relieve pain.
• State foundational ethical principles and legal considerations of pediatric palliative care.
• State details of the Colorado Access to Medical Aid in Dying Act and discuss implications for individual practice.
• Identify physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs and interventions for an imminently dying child and his/her family.
• Describe post-mortem care options and processes.
• Describe unique characteristics of neonatal palliative care and strategies to overcome.
• Summarize three aspects of excellent ongoing communication with the interdisciplinary team, the child and the family throughout the palliative care period.
• Recognize most common distressing symptoms at the end of life.
• Identify behaviors and actions involved at end-of-life that affect the dying experience for patients and families.
• Describe the concepts of grief and bereavement and identify tools that can be used to support families.
• Anticipate successes and pitfalls in program development.
Train-the-Trainer Session ObjectivesUpon completion of this half-day session, participants should be able to:
