Become a CatechistJoe Paprocki

At this time of the year, many Catholics nd themselves considering an invitation to become a catechist in their parish. Directors/Coordinators of

Religious Education/Faith Formation, Pastoral Associates, Priests, and Deacons are all “on the prowl” seeking out those who have the potential to serve in this role. Perhaps you’ve been invited to be a catechist. Perhaps you know someone who is thinking about becoming a catechist. Or perhaps you are the one doing

the inviting. Whatever the case may be, I oer the following reasons for becoming a catechist.

Top Reasons to Become a Catechist

You will grow in your own faith, learn the teachings of the Church, and deepen your relationship with Jesus.

Your Baptism calls you to share in Jesus’ ministry.

Children, teens, and adults in today’s world, more than ever, need to hear the Good News of Jesus.

Children, teens, and adults in today’s world, more than ever, need to encounter good role models of faith.

You have much to share with those you’ll teach, and you’ll have opportunities to share faith with other catechists.

Today’s catecheticaltextbooks/resources oer outstanding support.

You’ll be challenged, you’ll have fun, and you’ll make new friends.

You’ll be helping people deepen their relationship with Jesus. (You’ll be evangelising!)

You’ll be handing on a 2000-year-old Tradition that changes lives.

It’s our job: Jesus sent us to “go and teach all nations.”

What other reasons would you include?

If you are considering the invitation to serve as a catechist, or if you have any questions, please call Maureen Wooldridge on

9997 4694 or Yvonne van den Berg on 9157 0999 ext 13, or the Parish Oce on 9157 0999

There are lots of great catechists out there who would love to share their thoughts with you about this wonderful

opportunity!

Welcome! Our doors are open and the light is on.The Light is ON

“Light is a wonderful symbol of faith and the love of God, who breaks into our darkness to bring healing and peace. This light of God’s mercy is always available, in particular through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This Lent, you are invited to come to experience the healing that being forgiven brings.” - Bishop Peter Comensoli

The Light is On is an exciting initiative this year for Lent that seeks to welcome people to our churches for quiet time, prayer and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Churches around the Diocese will be open on Friday evenings in Lent, 8,15,22,29 March, 5 and 12 April from 7:00pm – 8:00pm.Lent commences on Ash Wednesday.

Want to make things right? Now is the time.

Experience God's light and peace in your life this Lent.Lent is the season where we prepare ourselves to renew and restore our relationship with Jesus and the Church as we prepare to celebrate Easter. You are warmly invited to join in prayer at our parishes during Lent.

When ready, you may consider participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. To help prepare yourself to receive the joy of God’s mercy, explore information at: www. thelightisonforyou.org.au to help you feel more condent and ready, including a Guide to Reconciliation.

For many of us the Sacrament of Reconciliation can be scary and even embarrassing. We may be too nervous or consider ourselves unforgivable. Yet with condence Pope Francis reminds us:

"How many times in my pastoral ministry have I heard it said, ‘Father, I have many sins,’ and I have always pleaded, ‘Don’t be afraid; go to him; he is waiting for you; he will take care of everything.’ We hear many oers from the world around us, but let us take up God’s oer instead: his is a caress of love." - Pope Francis, Homily, Basilica of St. John Lateran, Divine Mercy Sunday, April 7, 2013.

DO YOU WANT TO FAST FOR LENT?

Fast from hurting words and say kind words

Fast from sadness and be lled with gratitude

Fast from anger and be lled with patience

Fast from pessimism and be lled with hope

Fast from worries and trust in God

Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity

Fast from pressures and be prayerful

Fast from bitterness and ll your heart with joy

Fast from selshness and be compassionate

Fast from grudges and be reconciled

Fast from words and be silent so you can listen.

International Women’s Day will be celebrated on Friday 8 March. It is a day to celebrate women’s achievements, and both highlight and work to address barriers that continue to perpetuate gender inequality. The Australian theme this year is “More Powerful Together”. The Living Word First Reading Sir 27:4-7A reading from the book of EcclesiasticusDo not praise someone before they have spoken.

In a shaken sieve the rubbish is left behind,so too the defects of a man appear in his talk. The kiln tests the work of the potter, the test of a man is in his conversation. The orchard where the tree grows is judged on the quality of its fruit, similarly a man’s words betray what he feels.Do not praise a man before he has spoken, since this is the test of men.

The word of the Lord

Responsorial Psalm Ps 91:2-3. 13-16. R. See v.2

(R.) Lord, it is good to give thanks to you. It is good to give thanks to the Lordto make music to your name, O Most High,to proclaim your love in the morningand your truth in the watches of the night. (R)

The just will flourish like the palm-treeand grow like a Lebanon cedar. (R)

Planted in the house of the Lordthey will flourish in the courts of our God,still bearing fruit when they are old, still full of sap, still green,to proclaim that the Lord is just.In him, my rock, there is no wrong. (R)

Second Reading 1 Cor 15:54-58A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the CorinthiansVictory has been given to us through Jesus Christ.

When this perishable nature has put on imperishability, and when this mortal nature has put on immortality, then the words of scripture will come true: Death is swallowed up in victory. Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting? Now the sting of death is sin, and sin gets its power from the Law. So let us thank God for giving us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.Never give in then, my dear brothers, never admit defeat; keep on working at the Lord’s work always, knowing that, in the Lord, you cannot be labouring in vain.

The word of the Lord

Gospel Acclamation Phil 2:15-16

Alleluia, alleluia! Shine on the world like bright stars;you are offering it the word of life.Alleluia

Gospel Lk 6:39-45A reading from the holy Gospel according to LukeA person speaks from what is in his heart.

Jesus told a parable to his disciples, ‘Can one blind man guide another? Surely both will fall into a pit? The disciple is not superior to his teacher; the fully trained disciple will always be like his teacher. Why do you observe the splinter in your brother’s eye and never notice the plank in your own? How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,” when you cannot see the plank in your own? Hypocrite! Take the plank out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter that is in your brother’s eye.‘There is no sound tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces sound fruit. For every tree can be told by its own fruit: people do not pick figs from thorns, nor gather grapes from brambles. A good man draws what is good from the store of goodness in his heart; a bad man draws what is bad from the store of badness. For a man’s words flow out of what fills his heart.’

The Gospel of the Lord

Reflection

In our post-modern world, the lessonof the hypocrite seeking to remove thespeck from their neighbor’s eye beforeremoving the log from their own has attimes been taken too far and too literally. We are often confronted with a minimalist notion that nobody can be corrected or criticized because one person’s opinion is just as good as the next person’s. In this view, there is no room for universal truths; no room for authority; no room foran over-arching view of the world or a metanarrative—an underlying “big picture” storyfor life.On the surface, the idea that one person’sopinion is as valid as any other’s seemsvery democratic and sociable. However, it is fundamentally not true. Someone who has spent a lifetime studying and practicing in a particular field of endeavor cannot be lightly dismissed as “that’s just your opinion.” Yet, all too often, such learned knowledge and experience is given the same weight as ill-informed and sometimes mischievous opinion—frequently in the name of “balanced” discussion. For some people immersed in the postmodern culture this wash of opiniondressed up as fact is not only confusingbut sometimes dangerous. Social normsand even laws can be seen as just another opinion that differs from my own. The opinions of friends and complete strangers on the internet or social networks are held with the same level of legitimacy as established sources of social, moral, legal, and religious authority. Whilst it is proper to question established authority and require accountability and justification, the

absence of universal truths and metanarratives lead us back to the proverb that begins today’s gospel: the blind leading the blind.

A Guide to Prayer and Fasting

Why Fast?We are familiar with fasting as a Lenten practice, but it is in fact a practice that can be taken up at any time. Fasting is a spiritual discipline which draws us closer to God. In fasting we empty ourselves so that we can be filled with God. In doing without, we recognise our need for God, which leads us to prayer, and we become more grateful for what we have. It also allows us to identify with those who are in need, and to genuinely pray for them.Another aspect of fasting is that we follow in Jesus’ footsteps as Jesus offered himself for the benefit of others. We too offer something of ourselves for a purpose or intention. We join our small sacrifice to a greater purpose for the good of our society.

Some Ways to Fast as a Family

1. Do without a specific food treat• As an individual or as a family, do without a treat that you would normally eat, for example, potato chips or biscuits.• Pray as an individual or as a family after each evening meal.

2. Do without eating between meals• For each Friday do without eating between meals.

3. Make the evening meal a smaller meal• Once a week, eat less at the evening meal, for example, soup and bread.• At the start of the meal, offer a prayer.

4. Do without the television• Once a week, do without the television for an evening.• Use this quiet time to pray for the wellbeing of all people.
