As I write to you I am in the process of preparing for our 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting dedication service tomorrow night. I am so very excited, yet deeply humbled by the spiritual task before us as a church family. The time has come for us to take a major spiritual step together as the body of believers known as First Baptist Church. Wednesday night we will gather to dedicate ourselves to holiness and purity, to unity and fellowship, to openness and new ministry endeavors. As I make my personal preparations for this journey I am confronted by my selfishness, my pride, my personal preferences, and my comfort zones. Am I willing to die to self so that Christ may reign in me? Am I willing to put aside my “Baptist” in order to be a true disciple of Christ? Is there anything that I am not willing to give to God so that He can be glorified in my life? In my church? Joshua 3:5, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.” To consecrate yourself means to set yourself apart for God and His purpose for you. If we set ourselves apart in holiness He will do amazing, wonderful and astounding things among us. Don’t you want to see Him do it? Don’t you want to see His amazing work in this incredible church? It’s certainly my hope and prayer. So, join us. Beginning this Saturday, May 14, commit to pray and fast during the next forty days. You’re not being asked to actually stop eating for over a month. You may choose to give up eating out, television, playing golf, or you may decide not to eat at all on a certain day of the week. As you give up something important to you, replace it with a time of prayer and study in God’s Word. Pray and fast for: Personal and family holiness Church-wide holiness and unity Direction and guidance for our leadership as we discern the heart of God I love you! Musical Notes The Senior Adult Choir meets for rehearsal on Tuesday at 1000 AM in the choir room We have another road trip planned for Sunday evening May 29th We have new
music to learn and prepare We are having a great time of fellowship as we labor together to proclaim the name of Jesus through song Join us this week and be a part of the blessing
Rehearsal for the Adult Choir is on Wednesday at 710 PM in the choir room Right now is a perfect time for you to join the choir Believe it or not we will begin preparing for our Christmas program in just a little over a month Singing Christmas songs has been scientifically proven to keep you cool through the hot summer months (Well maybe not ldquoprovenrdquo but it is a nice thought) There is no better way to invest time than with Godrsquos people singing Godrsquos praises Come and see for yourself One Final Note Psalm 1041‑4 Bless the Lord O my soul O Lord my God You are very great You are clothed with splendor and majesty [2] Covering Yourself with light as with a cloak Stretching out heaven like a tent curtain [3] He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters He makes the clouds His chariot He walks upon the wings of the wind [4] He makes the winds His messengers Flaming fire His ministers Psalm 104 is a poetrsquos version of the creation story The poet takes some liberty with the order of events but still manages to convey the main point Godrsquos greatness and sovereignty over His creation Did you notice in v 1amp2 Godrsquos ldquowork clothesrdquo Those also happen to be His ldquoSunday-go-to-meetinrsquo-clothesrdquo Thatrsquos because He never changes He is always working and His work never puts Him in a strain He does not sweat or tire like we do His work is creation and redemption Our work is construction and repair His resources appear by His unlimited and unchanging Word We can only build from that which He has created We are limited We will strain sweat and tire (and I hope we will change our clothes Labor in warm weather can produce an unpleasant aroma in some) Two weeks ago God sent ldquoHis messengerrdquo (v4) through the Southeast His voice was heard all over the country What was His message to you What is He saying to you now He reminded me not to cling to ldquothingsrdquo but to hold more tightly to His hand 2 Cor 418 we look not at the things which are seen but at the things which are not seen for the things which are seen are temporal but the things which are not seen are eternal

Osama bin Laden is dead This headline has dominated the news for over a week
now and rightfully somdashthe most wanted terrorist in the whole world has finally
been brought to justice Many of us remember that morning on September 11
when some 3000 American civilians lost their lives and the rest of us sat in gripping
fear watching our TVs to see what was going to happen next Itrsquos no wonder that upon receiving the
news of bin Ladenrsquos death so many Americans ran out into the streets to celebrate Then I got on
Facebook and saw all the status updates of Christian friends which said things like ldquoEat that
suckardquo and other sarcastic remarks about bin Ladenrsquos eternal torment In fact one prominent
pastorpolitician issued this statement to bin Laden ldquoWelcome to hellrdquo And I began to ask myself
ldquoWhy are we as Christians rejoicing that a man is in hellrdquo And then I realized something - we were
doing exactly what we American Christians are really good at we were putting being an American
above being a Christian What I - and so many others - were doing was really forgetting the
gospel Osama bin Laden was an evil man who deserved to die and to burn in hell for all eternitymdash
and so am I Maybe I havenrsquot blown up 3000 people but the same sinful nature that prompted him
to do that also exists in me Yes Irsquom in the same boat as Osama bin Laden - and so are you And if it
werenrsquot for the free sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the free gift of faith He gave us wersquod have a front
row seat next to bin Laden around the fire pit This is not to deny the goodness of celebrating
justice When a criminal is held accountable for his crime that is something worth celebrating But
to rejoice in the demise of a human being well that is another matter altogether - and something
fundamentally opposed to the Christian faith We have an opportunity to show how Christianity is
fundamentally different than Islam in general and radical Islam in particular We do not rejoice in
death - we are saddened by the reminder of a fallen world We do not seek revenge - we trust the
God who says ldquoVengeance is minerdquo We do not seek to kill - we seek to redeem and bring new
life Letrsquos be a light in the dark world Letrsquos bring a little salt to the conversation And letrsquos use this
time to point to Jesus - and not to wave our American flags and chant ldquoUSArdquo Thy kingdom come
Lord thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven
