Those who will merely skim through thematerial comprised in The
Encyclopediaof Noble Families of a Romanian Originin Maramure;
County, by AlexandruFilipaqcu, will certainly be surprised. Before
their eyes, there unfolds a surprisingfor some, and for others an
even uncom-fortable historical overview, offered by thesocial
panorama of the life of the natives, alife about which very little
was known, andeven that 'little' was almost totally differentfrom
reality.
Before we proceed to a short run overthe material of the present

principle is the oppositeof any form of chauvinism, especially the
one metwith in the lTth-21th centuries, whose
devastatingaggressiveness did not constitute something to beproud
offor those who maintained and practicedit, as it could honour
those who more or less pur-posefully supported it.

mental-ities, and, consequently, difficult to under-stand for the
times we live in.2
In the l4th-16th centuries - the period ofthe Diplomas the
objectivity of the present
undertaking avails itself of - in virtue of thefeudal system,
the territory of a country did
not belong to the respective state. On thecontrary, it
represented the sum ofthe pos-
sessions of the King, who was an absolutemonarch. These
territories were conqueredby him or on his behalf, and ofthem -
forspecial favours brought to the crown - hecould reward through
donations some of his
vassals, who, consequently, became "dona-
tive nobles". At their turn, the latter werealso true owners of
the received posses-sions, which also included the serfs livingon
them. The loca1 lord exercised very often
absolute powers upon these serfs.
This juridical reality, so much differentfrom contemporary law
systems in whichsovereignty belongs to the state, very clear-ly
appears in the text of the documents ofthe epoch. being even more
conspicuousin the formulas used in the wording ofall Diplomas given
by Kings. In virtueof the feudal principle of sovereignty, thenext
King to come to the throne renewedthe Diplomas given by his
predecessor bymeans of a novo donatio formula.
Nevertheless, there is one exception, that

being made - most of the ti-mes unintentionally - between the
'Hungarian'Apostolic Kingdom, a flef of the papacy (a formused in
the expansionist policy ofCathotic faithto Eastern Europe), and the
Hungarian State, which appeared as such much later.

beginning by the apostolicKings through their granting of the
samenovo donatio, which represented, throughthe confirmation of the
statute of theVoivodes and Princes, a recognition oftheexistence of
social organizations previousto the apostolic Kingdom. The
followingspecifications and the examples given aremeant to
emphasize and clarify these as-pects ofthe social organization
andhierar-chy in the North of Ardeal (Transylvania)in the late
Middle Ages.
The privileges given to Romanian no-blemen by the Queens in
their fiefs areno exception from this rule, either, as itcomes out
with clarity from them that theRomanian Voivodes and Princes,
electedby their commune (communitatis wolqco-rum)hadtherights of
owners and lords overtheir lands. One of these rights was that
ofbeing the lords of their own law-courts fortheir subjects. The
same can be said notonly for the county of Maramureq, but alsofor
other counties, like Bereg or Ung.

In the facsimile above, there are afew coats of arms of the
Vlad, Dragffy,Dunca, and MoiE families, copied fromthe "Siebmacher"
collection, the volumeentitled Der Ungarische Adel. The
resem-blance (to identity, even) of the arms is ob-
vious, especially when the families are ofthe same kin. For
example, all descendantsof Prince Dragoq, as well as of his
son,Prince Sas, have on their coats, as arms, the half-moon, the
arrow, and two stars:Sas I, Sas II, Dunca, Bacinski,
Husovschi,Ilnilchi, etc. The coat of the Draghffy (sonof Drag, in
Hungarian) family has twodragons which surround the shield,
but, other than that, it is identical with PrinceDragoq's one.
One must note the fact that the tenden-
cy to phagocytose the native Ethnics inthe beneflt of another
Ethnical group isobvious throughout the course ofhistory, especially
in the 17th-20th centuries, untilWorld War II, and even afterwards.
Onecan be really surprised when reading thestudy written by Mr.
