The building was divided in three floors, roof and basement .Its bourgeois lounges are decorated with landscape paints or oriental scenes, floral and geometrics motifs in ceilings. The stained-glass windows, the grills and the tiles are outstanding. Nowadays is the public library and is used for cultural events. HOUSE OF CERVATO Also known as casa de los Rodriguez has been rehabilitated by a school work- shop. Its façade and viewpoints are a rep- resentative sample of the civil architecture of the 19 th century. Commanded build as family residence by the political and propertied Don Jose Rodriguez and Rodriguez, belonging to the so-called “clan of the fawns” (from the town of carballesa Villadecier- vos).It is a building that participates as a whole historicism nineteenth-century. GARDEN BRIDGE ARCH It formes part of the bridge that gave access to the magnificent Los Condes garden. From here there is one of the most beautiful views of the Castle and la Mota Gardens. MEDIAEVAL BRIDGE OVER THE ESLA RIVER Modernised on several occasions, it still has its medieval desing and part of its spands. FESTIVITIES THE “TORO ENMAROMADO” (BULL ON A ROPE) In Benavente’s festive panorama, the most famous and deeply rooted popular fiestas are undoubtedly those of the “Toro Enmaromado”. These usually last a week, though the “big” day is the Wednesday before the feast of Corpus Christi. They have been declared festivities of Regional Touristic Interest. On this day, the young men run holding onto a long rope tied to a bull’s horns. The peñas (clubs of friends), charangas (bands of costumed street musicians and dancers) and ver- benas (open-air dances) all contribute to creating a grand spectacle of music and colour. Date: The Wednesday before the feast of Corpus Christi. FIESTA DE LA VEGUILLA Monday of Pascuilla or Little Easter, eight days after Easter Sunday. Patronal festivals in honour virging of la Vega. There is the traditional “Petición del Toro Enmaromado” which will run through the streets 51 days later. CARNIVAL Before Lent. Colourful, lively processions. Fancy dress competitions. They finish with the burial of the Sardine. HOLY WEEK (EASTER) Sober processions with religious imagery of deep-rooted devotion and ancient traditions per- petuated by the Religious Brotherhoods. FAIRS THE SEPTEMBER FAIRS These fairs, which take place at the beginning of the month, have a more cultural and commer- cial focus, as well as being festive in nature. A ce- ramics, cattle, farm machinery and farm produce fair takes place during these days (FEMAG). Date: The beginning of September. PEPPER FESTIVAL (FAIR OF THE PEPPER) At the end of September. Exhibition, sale and tasting of this top quality product of the area. Date: End of September). THURSDAY MARKET The entire region goes there and there is a lot of buying and selling. GASTRONOMY In a region defined by its valleys and fertile riverside meadows. We can’t forget in our tables the magnificent products of its bountiful market gardens. The star of Benavente’s market gardens is the pepper, which is exalted in the regional fair of this product that takes place every year at the end of the month of September. Among the representative dishes of “los Valles” (the Valleys) are to be found by Tera trout, pichones (young pi- geons) done a la rápida or a la benaventana, salted cod done a lo tío or a la cazuela, cangrejos (cray- fish) and ancas de rana (frog’s legs). Not to forget the succulent meats roasted in wood-fired ovens, such as tostón (suckling pig) and cordero lechal (suckling lamb). Among the farm produce of re- nowned fame and quality are to be found cheeses, cured cold meats, honey and liqueurs. Among the wide variety of traditional cakes and pastries, the most renowned are the typical feos, rosquillas de trancalapuerta, bollos de coscarón and rosquillas del ramo. Special mention needs to be made, because of their quality, of the convent- it becomes the head of an extensive county under the demesne of the Pimentel family. During the War of Independence, the foundations of Benavente and its fortress were shaken by the attacks of the Napoleonic troops, which affected many of its principal buildings. In the 19th and beginnings of the 20th centuries, the local bour- geoisie played a notable political and economic role within the framework of the Restoration. In 1929, it was granted the title of City by Alfonso XIII. Due to its situation and dynamism, Benavente and its surrounding area is actually seen as one of the driv- ing forces of provincial and regional development. MAIN ARTISTICS MONUMENTS LA MOTA CASTLE In its time it was one of the most sumptuous palaces in Spain, according to writers and tra- vellers. It has the so-called Spiral Tower, a 16 th century work, which is a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance. It has a magnificent Moorish cof- fered ceiling originating from the former convent of San Román Del Valle. At the present time its the local National Parador. HOSPITAL OF THE PIEDAD Founded by the 5 th Earl of Benavente, Alonso Pimentel , as a hospital for pilgrims. The façade is a beautiful example of the first Spanish Renais- sance, when this new style stood out and Gothic influences are still maintained. In the interior the harmonious square-shaped patio with a series of arcades propped up on columns in outstand- ing. Galleries surround the top floor with different handrails on each side. CHURCH OF SANTA MARÍA DEL AZOGUE The church shows the different artistic styles that have passed by since the start of its construction in the 12 th century. The ground plant and the head- board are the Romanesque style. A clear Cistercian influence can be seen in the decoration motifs and in the distribution of its beautiful apses. The vaults were restored in the 16 th century. The most original aspect of this church is the play on volume as offered by the five apses of the main façade, as well as the decoration of its two doorways and the Gothic sculptures in its interior. CHURCH OF SAN JUAN DEL MERCADO Started in ashlar stone in 1182, it was com- pleted several years later after bricks were used as the structural element. The church of San Juan del Mercado presents a Romanesque style. The ground plant has three naves with a non-pro- nounced transept and three semicircular apses in the headboard. The temple preserve three porches, outstanding amongst which for its vast iconographic development the one situated at mid- day, which has the theme of the Epiphany. TOWN HALL BULDING (City Hall) It was built in the middle of the last century for the Town Hall in the neoclassic style. The severity of the architectural lines and the parallelism of the volumes make this a harmonic building with the set of the Major Square. This one is constructed, in good part, based on ashlars stone from the disentailed convent benaventano of San Francisco. It has two floors, the first in the Tuscan order and the main floor in the Doric order. QUEEN SOFIA THEATRE This is a building of the architect Antonio Garcia Sanchez-Blanco and dates from 1928. In 1984 the Benavente’s city hall obtains this building to recover a singular architecture for the city. In this way in 1991 the building was rehabilitated by the architect Francisco Somoza following the parameters of romantic theatres. The theatre has a seating capacity of 576 people between armchairs and theatre boxes, being re- inaugurated by H.M QUEEN SOFIA in 1991. HOUSE OF SOLITA This building is a representative mansion of the bourgeoisie of the nineteen hundreds; it was ordered build by the propertied and Senator Felipe González Gómez in 1904. This construc- LA CIUDAD La ciudad de Benavente se encuentra situa- da en una terraza de escasa elevación sobre di- latadas vegas de los ríos Órbigo y Esla que jun- tan aguas debajo de su casco urbano. Ubicada a unos 744 metros de altitud sobre el nivel del mar, es el centro de confluencia de dos zonas di- ferenciadas tanto física como económicamente, que son la comarca denominada de “Los Valles” (Tera, Polvorosa, Valverde, Vidriales) y las llanu- ras de la Tierra de Campos. Es cruce de importan- tes vías de comunicación que unen la zona centro de España con el noroeste peninsular. Junto a es- tas autovías y carreteras de primer orden, existen otras de carácter regional y comarcal que contri- buyen a hacer de la ciudad uno de los centros im- portantes del desarrollo regional. RESEÑA HISTÓRICA Su envidiable posición estratégica, atrajo ya desde tiempos remotos a diferentes pueblos que se asentaron en la zona. Antes del inicio de nues- tra Era, la comarca tenía ya entidad definida, es- tando habitada por la tribu o gentilidad astur de los brigecienses, cuyo centro Brigecio aparece ci- tado en el itinerario romano de Antonino. A me- diados del s.XII aparece con el nombre de Mal- grat y vinculada al proceso de repoblación del territorio emprendido por los monarcas leoneses. Fernando II, el gran benefactor de Benavente, le concede Carta Foral en 1167.En 1230 es esce- nario del llamado “Convenio de Benevente” me- diante el que se unen las coronas de los reinos de León y Castilla en la persona de Fernando III. Posteriormente recibirá numerosos privile- gios reales, apareciendo Benavente con frecuen- cia en las crónicas castellanas. Durante el reina- do de Enrique III en 1398, Benavente y su tierra es entregada a título de condado al caballero portugués Don Juan Alfonso Pimentel, quien se- ría tronco de dinastía nobiliaria que se manten- dría vinculada al lugar hasta el s.XIX, siendo así que la historia de la ciudad se confunde a me- nudo con la de sus señores. Durante la guerra de la Independencia, Benavente y su alcázar fue- ron sacudidos por los ataques de las tropas na- poleónicas, viéndose afectados muchos de sus edificios principales. En el siglo XIX y las prime- ras décadas del XX, la burguesía local juega un destacado papel político y económico dentro del entramado de la Restauración. En 1929 obtiene el título de Ciudad por concesión de Alfonso XII. En la actualidad Benavente y su comarca, por su situación y dinamismo se apuntan ya como uno de los centros motores del desarrollo pro- vincial y regional. En las últimas décadas el intenso desarrollo de la agricultura, la industria, el comercio y las comunicaciones, han hecho que la ciudad se ex- tienda y mejore constantemente a tono con su papel de centro urbano de una extensa comarca. ARTE Y CULTURA MONUMENTOS CASTILLO DE LA MOTA (Torreón del Caracol) Fue en tiempos uno de los alcázares más sun- tuosos de España, según testimoniaron escrito- res y viajeros. Conserva la llamada Torre del Ca- racol, que es obra del s. XVI, mezcla entre gótico y renacentista. El conjunto se encuentra cubierto por un magnífico artesonado morisco proceden- te del desaparecido convento de San Román del Valle. En la actualidad es el Parador Nacional de Turismo de esta localidad. HOSPITAL DE LA PIEDAD Fundado por el quinto Conde de Benaven- te, Don Alonso Pimentel como hospital de pere- grinos. La fachada es una bella muestra del pri- mer renacimiento español, cuando despunta este nuevo estilo y aún se mantienen influencias del gótico. En el interior destaca el armonioso patio de planta cuadrada con arquerías apeadas en co- lumnas. La planta superior se halla rodeada de galerías con antepechos diferentes en cada uno de los lados. IGLESIA DE SANTA MARÍA DEL AZOGUE La iglesia muestra los diversos estilos artísticos por los que ha pasado desde el inicio de su cons- trucción en el s. XII. La planta general y la cabecera responden al estilo románico. En los motivos de la decoración y en la distribución de sus hermosos ábsides se observa una clara influencia cistercien- se. Las bóvedas se restauraron en el siglo XVI. Lo más original de esta iglesia está en el juego de volú- menes que ofrecen los cinco ábsides de la cabece- ra, así como la decoración de sus dos puertas y las esculturas góticas del interior. IGLESIA DE SAN JUAN DEL MERCADO Iniciada en piedra de sillería en el año 1182, fue terminada muchos años des- pués utilizando ya el ladrillo como ele- mento constructivo. La iglesia de San Juan del Mercado presenta un estilo románico. La plan- ta de la iglesia tiene tres naves con un crucero no acusado y tres ábsides semi- circulares en la cabecera. El templo conserva tres portadas entre las que destaca por su amplio de- sarrollo iconográfico la situada al mediodía con el tema de la Epifania. EDIFICIO DEL AYUNTAMIENTO Levantado a me- diados del siglo XIX (1845) para Casa Consistorial, el edifi- cio se inscribe den- tro del estilo neoclá- sico tardío. La severidad de las líneas arquitec- tónicas y la hori- zontalidad de los volúmenes hacen del mismo un edi- ficio armónico con el conjunto de la Plaza Ma- yor. Éste se construye, en buena parte, a base de piedra de sillería procedente del desamortizado convento benaventano de San Francisco. Cons- ta de dos plantas de piedra de sillería, de orden toscano la primera y dórico la planta noble. TEATRO REINA SOFÍA Este edificio data de 1928 y es obra del arqui- tecto Antonio García Sánchez-Blanco. En 1984 el Ayuntamiento de Benavente decide la adquisición del edificio, con el ánimo de recu- perar para la ciudad una arquitectura singular. Así en 1991 el edificio fue rehabilitado por el arquitec- to Francisco Somoza siguiendo los parámetros de los teatros románticos. El Teatro tiene un aforo de 576 plazas entre butacas y palcos, siendo reinau- gurado por S.M. la Reina Doña Sofía en 1991. CASA DE SOLITA Este edificio es un representativo palacete de la burguesía del novecientos, fue mandado cons- truir por el hacendado y senador don Felipe Gon- zález Gómez en 1904. Obra del arquitecto Segun- do Viloria Escarda, es un ejemplo representativo de la arquitectura de calidad de principios del si- glo XX. El inmueble está dividido en tres plantas más sótano y azotea. Sus salones burgueses se hayan decorados con pinturas de paisajes o es- cenas orientales, motivos geométricos y florales en los techos, y destacan las vidrieras, la rejería y azulejos. En la actualidad se destina a usos cul- turales y alberga la Biblioteca Pública Municipal. CASA DEL CERVATO Conocida también como Casa de los Rodríguez ha sido rehabilitada por una escuela taller. Su fa- chada y miradores son una ejemplo representativo de la arquitectura civil del s. XIX. (1881) Mandado construir como residencia familiar por el político y hacendado Don José Rodríguez y Rodríguez, per- teneciente al llamado “clan de los cervatos” (origi- narios de la localidad carballesa de Villadeciervos). Se trata de un edificio que participa en su conjunto del historicismo decimonónico. ARCO DEL PUENTE DEL JARDÍN Formaba parte del puente que daba acceso al magnífico jardín de los Condes. Desde sus proximidades puede obtenerse una de las más bellas perspectivas del Castillo y de los jardines de la Mota. PUENTE MEDIEVAL SOBRE EL ESLA Remozado en numerosas ocasiones conserva la traza medieval y parte sus ojos. FIESTAS FIESTAS DEL “TORO ENMAROMADO” Suelen durar una semana, aunque el día gran- de es el miércoles anterior a la festividad de Cor- pus Christi. Son unas fiestas declaradas de Interés Turís- tico Regional. En este día, los mozos corren aga- rrados a una larga maroma sujeta a las astas del toro. Las peñas, las charangas y las verbenas contribuyen a crear un gran espectáculo de músi- ca y colorido. Fecha: Miércoles anterior al domin- go de Corpus Christi. FIESTA DE LA VEGUILLA Lunes de Pascuilla, ocho días después del Do- mingo de Resurrección. Fiestas Patronales en ho- nor de la Virgen de la Vega. Es tradicional la “Pe- tición del toro enmaromado” que recorrerá las calles cincuenta y un días después. FIESTAS DE CARNAVAL Preceden a la Cuaresma. Vistosos y animados desfiles. Concluyen con el “Entierro de la Sardina”. SEMANA SANTA Sobrios desfiles procesionales con imaginería de arraigada devoción y antiquísimas tradiciones perpetuadas a través de sus cofradías. FERIAS FERIAS DE SEPTIEMBRE Estas ferias, que ocupan los primeros días del mes, son, junto al carácter festivo, de orienta- ción más cultural y comercial. Tiene lugar duran- te estos días una feria de cerámica, de ganadería, maquinaria agrícola y productos de la tierra (FE- MAG). Fecha: Primeros días de Septiembre. FERIA DEL PIMIENTO Exposición y degustación de este producto de gran calidad en la comarca. Fecha: finales de sep- tiembre. MERCADO DE LOS JUEVES Concurre toda la comarca y hay gran activi- dad mercantil. GASTROMOMÍA En una comarca definida por sus valles y ve- gas, no puede faltar en sus mesas, una amplia y variada muestra de los productos de su genero- sa huerta. La estrella de la huerta benaventana es el pimiento, del cual se hace exaltación en la fe- ria comarcal de este producto que tiene lugar to- dos los años a finales del mes de septiembre. En- tre los platos representativos “de los Valles”, se encuentran las truchas del Tera, los pichones a la rápida o a la benaventana, el bacalao a lo tío o a la cazuela, los cangrejos y las ancas de rana. Sin olvidar los suculentos asados en horno de leña, como el tostón y el cordero lechal. Entre los productos agroalimentarios que go- zan fama y calidad se encuentran los quesos, los embutidos, la miel y los licores. Dentro de la am- plia repostería tradicional son de renombre los tí- picos feos pasando por las rosquillas de tranca- lapuerta, bollos de coscarón y las rosquillas del ramo. Mención destacada merecen por su calidad los dulces conventuales, como son las rosquillas de ángel y la tarta del Cister. En cuanto a los vinos existe toda una variada gama de calidades, des- de los claretes con gran cuerpo de Vidriales, en cuya elaboración interviene el fruto blanco y tin- to de las vides, pasando por los vinos de aguja y los tintos jóvenes y de crianza. Vinos que cuen- tan con la mención honorífica de “Vinos de la Tie- rra”. La tradición bodeguera tiene su ejemplo en la comarca en la multitud de bodegas familiares existentes en todos los municipios de la comar- ca, algunas de ellas abiertas al público, como en el caso de San Román del Valle THE TOWN The town of Benavente is situated on a pla- teau overlooking the extensive meadowlands of the Órbigo and Esla riverbasins, whose waters converge just outside the city limits. Situated at 744 metres above sea level, it is the centre of confluence of two areas differentiated both physi- cally as well as economically, namely the region known as Los Valles or “The Valleys” (Tera, Pol- vorosa, Valverne, Vidriales) and the plains of the Tierra de Campos or the “Land of Fields”. It is an important intersection of roads linking the cen- tre of Spain with the northwest of the peninsula. Together with these dual carriageways and main roads are to be found other regional and country roads that contribute to making the town an im- portant centre of regional development. HISTORICAL ACCOUNT Its enviable strategic position has always at- tracted different peoples to settle in the area. Signif- icant archaeological sites from the Chalcolithic age have been unearthed in the soil beneath Benavente. Before the beginning of our Era, the region was al- ready a defined entity, being inhabited by the hea- then tribe astur of the Brigecienses, whose centre, Brigecio, is mentioned in the Roman itinerary of An- toninus. In the middle of the 12th century, the Town received the name of Malgrat and appears linked to the process of resettlement undertaken by the mon- archs of León. Fernando II, King of León, grants the town its charter in 1167, with the Cortes (Courts) meeting there in 1202 in the period of Alfonso IX. In 1230, it is the scene of the definitive union of the Kingdoms of León and Castille in the agreement known as the “Convenio de Benavente”. The subsequent history of the town is linked with that of its lords and masters.
