You may not be studying this in your seminars, but there will be a lecture on this author, and her work is recommended for a fuller understanding of the Revolutionary context ofRomanticism, and the place of women's writing in the period. The set text for lectures andseminars will be Mary and the Wrongs of Woman and the recommended edition is the onepublished by Oxford World's Classics, 2009, ed. Gary Kelly. The Penguin and Nortoneditions are also reliable. Also worth consulting are Wollstonecraft's other writings such asA Vindication of the Rights of Woman (either the Penguin or Norton editions arerecommended), her Collected Letters or her Letters written during a short residence inSweden, Norway and Denmark. The memoirs written by her husband, William Godwin, area good starting point for understanding her biography, Memoirs of the author of AVindication of the Rights of Woman. As far as modern biographies are concerned, ClaireTomalin's The life and death of Mary Wollstonecraft is a good lively read, and Janet Todd's Mary Wollstonecraft: a Revolutionary Life also gives useful background and criticalinformation.

Dickens (42 items)
Seminars will focus on Oliver Twist and/or Great Expectations. Check seminar programeson Blackboard for details. Penguin, Oxford and Everyman are the best editions forpurchase. For biography, Peter Ackroyd's excellent Dickens (Sinclair-Stevenson, 1990) isrecommended, as is Fred Kaplan's more psychoanalytic approach in Dickens (John HopkinsUP, 1988). Dickens's correspondence has been reprinted in the monumental twelvevolume Pilgrim edition, The Letters of Charles Dickens, (Clarendon, 1965-2002). For awonderfully edited collection of Dickens's journalism see Michael Slater's four-volume Dentedition. To find out about recent critical work on Dickens, I highly recommend the new Palgrave Advances in Charles Dickens Studies, ed. John Bowen and Robert Patton(Palgrave, 2006);' and Dickens Refigured: Bodies, Desires and Other Histories, ed. JohnSchad (Manchester UP, 1996).
