Overview

Dear Pre-Major Advisors, Thankyouforofferingyourtimeandexpertisetosupportfirst-yearengineeringstudentsduringanimportantandpivotaljunctureintheiracademiccareers.Asyouknow,moststudentsarriveoncampusinthefallfilledwithexcitementandgreatanticipation,butformanythetransitionandnewlyacquiredindependenceisoverwhelmingandcreatesstressandanxiety.YourcommitmenttothesuccessofallstudentsandtotheiracademicexplorationandsocialdevelopmentenablesthemtonavigatethisnewenvironmenttoeventuallyfindtheirplaceatTufts.Eachyear,studentsleaveglowingremarksabouttheiradvisorsonthefirst-yearsurveythatrecognizeyouravailability,attentionandsolidadvice,andexpressappreciationforyourgenuineconcernandsupport.

Structure of Pre-Major Academic Advising AdvisingTeamEachfirst-yearengineeringstudentissupportedbyanAdvisingTeamconsistingofseveralprofessionals.Theyare:You(thePre-MajorAdvisor),theAdvisingDeanandaStudentSuccessAdvisorassignedalphabetically,andsomedepartments(i.e.MEandCS)haveanadditionaladvisortoworkwiththeirrespectivefacultyprovidingin-depthadvisingontheirrespectivemajorsandcareers.Tolearnmoreabouttheserolesandtocontacttheseindividuals,seebeloworclickTuftsAcademicAdvisingWhatisanAdvisingDean?TheAdvisingDeansforENandLAresideinDowlingHallaspartofAcademicAdvisingandUndergraduateStudiesexceptforLeahGaddwhoseofficeisattheSMFA.TheDeansworkwithallstudentsonacademicmattersandserveasthemainpointofcontactforfacultywhohaveconcernsaboutanystudent.Theyalsoarethepointofcontactforparents.JenniferStephan

Students Select Advising Options Overthesummer,first-yearstudentsarerequiredtoviewanAcademicEssentialsthatoutlinesbasicadvisinginformationanddegreerequirements.Oncetheyhavewatchedthevideo,studentscompleteanadvisingsurveytoaidintheadvisingassignmentprocess.Thesurveyallowsstudentstorankandexpresssomeoftheiracademicinterests.AstheirPre-majoradvisor,youwillreceivealistofyournewadviseesatthebeginningofAugust.Theincomingstudentswillalsoreceiveyourname,department,andemailaddresssoonthereafter.Youarewelcometocontactyourstudentsoverthesummer,tointroduceyourselfandbeginaconversationaboutfallcourseselection.Allpre-majoradvisorswillremainthestudent’sadvisoruntilthetimethestudentdeclarestheirmajoronMarch1.Youaretheirprimarycontactandanextremelyvaluableresource.Pre-majoradvisorsarewelcometoreachouttotheSSAsorAdvisingDeanwithadvisingquestionsandconcerns,and/orcanalsoreferstudentstoanSSAorDean.

DuringOrientation,pre-majoradvisorsmeettheirnewadviseesforthefirsttime.

Toaidyou,wehaveestablishedanewrole:EngineeringAmbassador!Therewillbetwoupper-classstudentsperdepartmentwhowererecommendedbyeachDepartmentChairtofillthisrole.Youwillreceivetheirnamesviae-mailafewweekspriortoOrientation.Theirresponsibilitiesare:

• ToarriveonTuesdaytomoveintotheirdorm/apartment.• OnWednesdaytheywillhelpfirst-yearsmoveintodormsinthemorning,andmeetwiththeEN

Advisingstaffforlunch&trainingintheafternoon.• Assistat/leadeventsonThursdayafternoonthroughevening:man/womantheirdepartment’s

tableattheAcademicFair,attendtheENdinner,participateinastudent-ledpaneltoeducatefirst-yearstudentsaboutENmajorsatTuftsandansweranyquestionstheymighthave.

• Facilitate/supportyouinyourdepartmentonFridayasdeterminedbyyou/yourdepartment.• Beon-handSaturdaymorningduringregistrationtoanswerlast-minutequestionsandtrouble-

shootproblems(Note,thisyearfirst-yearengineerswillregisteronSaturdayinsteadofFriday,althoughstillpriortoliberalartsstudents’enrollmenttime!)

Youshouldplantoreachouttoyourdepartment’sAmbassadorsforanyassistancethatyouneedtosupportyouradviseesduringOrientation.

PleaseconsiderjoiningusfordinneronThursdayevening–allthefirst-yearengineeringstudentsplustheEngineeringAmbassadorswillattend.Thiswouldbeagreatopportunitytomeetyouradviseesinformally.Times,locationandarequestforanRSVPwillbee-mailedtoyoupriortoOrientation.

ItwouldbeidealifyoucouldmeetwithyouradviseesonFridayasstudentshavenoconflictsbetween9AMand1PM.(IfFridaypresentsaschedulingproblem,meetingwiththemonThursdaymaybepossible.)YourEngineeringAmbassadorswillhelpyoutomakethesearrangements.

Credit-Hour System CredittoSHUconversionquestions:

InJune2018,theSchoolsofArtsandSciencesandEngineeringadoptedanewcredit-hoursystemusedbymostuniversitiesintheUnitedStates.Underthenewcreditsystem:

• MostTuftscourseswillbeassigned3"SHUs"(Semester-hourunits)• Manywillbeassigned4SHUs,andafewmaybeworth5ormoreSHUs.SHUvalueswere

assignedbyeachdepartmenttoreflectthetimecommitmentandworkloadofeachcourse.• Previous“halfcredit”courseswillbeassigned1or2SHUs

Inadditiontomeetingalldegreerequirements,studentswillberequiredtoearnaminimumof120SHUsfortheEngineeringBSdegrees(thoughmostdegreeprogramsrequiremorecredits).Ofthese120SHUs,studentspursuinganABETdegreemustalsoearn18SHUsofHASS,30SHUSofmathandnaturalscience,and45SHUsofengineeringcredit.Allundergraduatesmustalsocomplete8semestersoffull-timestudy(or10semestersforthoseinthecombined-degreeprograms)tofulfillTufts'ResidencyRequirement.

Advising First Year Engineering Students TipsforFirstYearAdvising:

1.Itisimportanttopromotehavingabalancedschedule.Studentswillwanttobecognizantofthetimeanddatesthatcoursesaretakingplaceandmakesuretheirschedulesarebalancedinawaythatdoesnotoverloadthematcertaintimesoroncertaindays.

2.Thefirstsemesterisagreatopportunitytoexploreinterests.Studentscangetinvolvedacrosscampuswithvariousgroupsandactivities.Formoreinformationonco-curricularlifeatTufts,youcanvisittheOfficeforCampusLifewebsitetolearnmoreaboutstudentclubsandorganizations:http://ocl.tufts.edu/

• ANaturalSciencescourse-eitherChemistry1,Chem11orPhysics11(5/6SHUs)

• Calculus,eitherthefirstintheseries,Math32,orlaterinthesequenceshouldthestudenthave

oneormorepre-matriculationcredits(seebelow).(3SHUs)

Pleasenote,theminimumfull-timeloadis12SHUs;studentswillneedtocompleteanaverageof15to18SHUspersemestertograduateontime.Full-timeengineeringstudentscanenrollinuptoandincluding21SHUsandneedtopetitiontheirAdvisingDeanatthebeginningofthesemesterforpermissiontoaddanyadditionalcredit.Studentsrarelygrantedpermissiontotakeadditionalcreditsintheirfirstsemester.
