F r i e n d s Roadshow i s a communal group o f p e o p l e brought t o g e t h e r w i h t one common i d e a - t o e n t e r ­t a i n . They have performed i n b a r s , i n t h e s t r e e t s c h u r c h e s , and r o c k f e s t i v a l s . They w i l l p e r f o r m anywhere t o r e a c h t h e p u b l i c . The company have brought q u i t e an a s s o r t m e n t of p e o p l e from around t h e w o r l d w i t h v a r i e d s k i l l s t o g e t h e r t o work as a team. M a g i c i a n s , c l o w n s , mimes, d a n c e r s , p u p p e t e e r s , a c r o b a t s and musi c i a n s who w i s h t o a p p e a l t o t h e p u b l i c not o n l y t o s p e c t a t e but a l s o t o p a r t i c i p a t e . The C r y s t a l T h e a t r e o f t h e S a i n t was founded i n B r i s t o l i n 1971. The company has a l ­ways been a c o - o p e r a t i v e , and r e l i e d e n t i r e l y on i t s own s o u r c e s t o produce c r e a t i v e m a t e r i a l and cope w i t h the p r a c t i c a l i t i e s o f e x i s t e n c e . In the l a s t f o u r y e a r s they have w r i t t e n 14 p l a y s and t h e s e have been g i v e n i n some 300 p e r f o r m a n c e s . E l e ­ments o f f a r c e , s u r r e a l i s t pantomime and modern t e c h n o ­l o g y a r e f u s e d i n t o the work, and t h e y haven been c a l l e d 'avant g a r d e ' , but a r e a c t u a l ­l y concerned w i t h d i s c o v e r i n g f o r t h e m s e l v e s t h e o l d e s t p r i n c i p l e s o f drama. E v e r y performance i s an e x p e r i m e n t and the a u d i e n c e i s one d i ­mension t h a t changes e v e r y n i g h t . MIMETROUPE i s a company o f mimes founded i n June, 1975. A f t e r a summer of i n t e n s i v e work, t h e Troupe p r e m i e r e d w i t h a mime a d a p t i o n of t h e m e d i e v a l m o r a l i t y p l a y Eve­ryman. The c r i t i c s c a l l e d t h e p r o d u c t i o n " c o m p e l l i n g " . A f t e r t h e run of Everyman, MIMETROUPE cha n n e l e d i t s e-n e r g i e s i n t o c o n c e n t r a t e d e x p l o r a t i o n o f o r i g i n a l and av a n t g a r d e mime forms as w e l l as i n n o v a t i v e s t y l e s of per f o r m a n c e . NOEL REDDING P u l s a t i n g , d r i v i n g , pounding, the Noel Redding Band has been t e a r i n g up t h e B r i t i s h I s l e s . Though t h e N o e l Redding Band has o n l y been t o g e t h e r s i n c e e a r l y 1975, t h e members o f t h e group a r e no newcomers t o t h e p e r f o r m i n g c i r c u i t . In 1966 Noel teamed up w i t h drummer H i t c h M i t c h e l l and an a t t h e time unknown s o u l s e a r c h i n g American g u i t a r i s t t o f o rm The J i m i H e n d r i x Ex­p e r i e n c e . Redding and M i t c h e l l gave t h e band a h i g h l y - s t y l i ­zed B r i t i s h f l a i r , and i t was i n t h e U n i t e d Kingdom t h a t t h e l e g a c y began. Redding p l a y e d a t hunderous bass t h a t echoed f e r o c i o u s ­l y w h i l e J i m i s o l o e d and d i d h i s magic t o the- g u i t a r . MONTE BANKS Begonnen onder z i j n eigen naam - Mario B i a n c h i - kreeg h i j pas echt een kans toen Warner B r o t h e r s b e s l o t e n ko-medies t e maken. Het waren weliswaar low-budgetcomedies, maar toch greep h i j de g e l e -genheid met beide handen aan. Reeds v&drdat h i j van B u l l s Eye Comedies o v e r s t a p t e naar Warner Bros had h i j z i j n naam veranderd i n Monte Banks. H i j speelde een en t h o u s i a s t e jongeman d i e b i j n a a l t i j d i n m o e i l i j k h e d e n zat door de p e r v e r s i t e i t e n des levens. Aangezien z i j n f i l m s s l e c h t g e d i s t r i b u e e r d werden, g i n g h i j van Warner Bros naar Fox en van Fox naar Grand-Asher, waar h i j v e r s c h i l l e n d e j a r e n z i j n eigen komedies sc h r e e f en r e g i s e e r d e . In deze f i l m s komt het echte k a r a k t e r van de Monte Banks d i e we ons heri n n e r e n , naar voren. De en t h o u s i a s t e en onstuimige jongen d i e e n i g z i n s i n toom gehouden werd door z i j n v e r -l e g e n h e i d , had v e e l over-wicht over z i j n verscheidene v r o u w e l i j k e t e g e n s p e l e r s . Z i j n handelsmerk was het triomferende s l o t van de f i l m , na een enorm groot aan­t a l k l e i n e m i s l u k k i n g e n .

NEAL BURNS Neal Burns begon i n 1914 voor de A l C h r i s t i e s t u d i o t e werken en heeft het g r o o t s t e g e d e e l t e van z i j n c a r r i e r e daar doorgebracht. De A l C h r i s t i e s t u d i o maak-te komedies d i e zeer v e r -s c h i l l e n d waren van de Mack Sennett komedies, d i e v e e l a l op e f f e c t e n werkten met mod-der, v e e l a c h t e r v o l g i n g e n en t a a r t e n s m i j t e n . A l C h r i s ­t i e daarentegen g e b r u i k t e een komische s i t u a t i e , met het d a g e l i j k s e leven a l s achtergrond. De C h r i s t i e komieken waren zeer t r o t s op hun produkten en de r e l a t i e s tussen hen leken v e e l meer op d i e van een grote f a m i l i e dan b i j andere s t u d i o ' s . In 1915 maakte Neal Burns §6n komedie per week, t e r w i j l h i j e x c e n t r i e k e types neer-z e t t e van W a l l s t r e e t k l e r k t o t een armoedige neger. Daarna begon h i j s c e n a r i o s t e s c h r i j v e n want daar was dringend behoefde aan. In 1916 ging h i j weer t o n e e l s p e l e n , omdat de f i n a n c i e l e s i t u a t i e b i j C h r i s t i e nogal p r e c a i r was. Maar aan het eind van het t o n e e l s e i z o e n keerde h i j weer naar C h r i s t i e t e r u g . H i j was 66n van de weinige echte t o n e e l s p e l e r s d i e n i e t u i t de v a r i ^ t e ' afkomstig wa­ren. In de t w i n t i g e r j a r e n

kreeg h i j een s e r i e aange-boden waarin h i j de s t e r zou z i j n . Hoewel h i j d i e n i e t z e l f r e g i s e e r d e , had h i j toch wel bepaalde eigen idee§n, d i e h i j er ook door-d r u k t e . De meest t r a g i s c h e gebeur-t e n i s u i t z i j c a r r i e r e was toen C h r i s t i e door Paramount werd overgenomen, d i e de f i l m s a l l e e n maar g e b r u i k t e om hun programma's op te v u l l e n . H i j kreeg de genadeslag toen het g e l u i d z i j n i n t r e e deed. Het f e i t , dat h i j een goede stem had en een goed t o n e e l -s p e l e r was, was vreemd genoeg n i e t van b e t e k e n i s voor Paramount. En zo ra a k t e h i j , a l s zovele van de s t e r r e n van de stomme f i l m , i n de v e r g e t e l h e i d .

En sommige f i l m s z i j n zeer s a d i s t i s c h , z o a l s b i j v o o r ­beeld de Tom & J e r r y teken­f i l m s , waar a l t i j d v e e l

klappen v a l l e n . Edoch, ze kunnen eenvoudig n i e t kapot, dus a l s ze een s t r i j k i j z e r , brandkast of piano van de 25-ste v e r d i e p i n g op hun hoofd k r i j g e n , worden ze e e r s t zo vl a k a l s v l o e i p a p i e r . w a a r n a ze gewoon weer opstaan. Ub Iwerks maakte minder wrede f i l m p j e s ; h i j i s dan ook b i j Walt Disney begonnen waar h i j o.a. de e e r s t e Mickey Mouse-films en - s t r i p s en de s e r i e A l i c e i n Cartoonland maakte (_*1927). Begin d e r t i g e r j a r e n begon h i j met F l i p the Frog en l a ­t e r met K i k o the Kangaroo. Reeds i n 1934 maakte h i j het k l e u r e n t e k e n f i l m p j e "Don Quichote" dat U v o r i g e week kon bewonderen. Wat zeer b e l a n g r i j k was (en i s ) b i j t e k e n f i l m s , was de muziek. F a n t a s t i s c h e muziek d i e de s f e e r i n 3 seconden kon veranderen van een w i l d e t o t een r u s t i g e , romantische s f e e r . Hetgeen nodig was, want het volgende moment was er een geheel andere s i t u a t i e op een geheel andere l o k a t i e . A l l e t e k e n f i l m s z i j n i n zwart-w i t .
