Foreword In 1992, CEN/BT decided to subrnit International Standard ISO 9692 : 1992 Metal-arc welding with covered electrode, gas-shielded rnetal-arc welding and gas welding; joint prepara-

to the Unique Acceptance Procedure in accordance with resolution BTS 2 C 48/1992.

The result was positive. This European Standard shall be given the Status of a national Standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsernent, and conflicting national Standards withdrawn, by August 1994 at the latest.

In accordance with the CENKENELEC Internat Regulations, the following countries are bound to irnplernent this European Standard: Austria, Belgiurn, Denrnark, Finland, France, Gerrnany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.

tions for steel

Endorsement notice The text of the International Standard ISO 9692 : 1992 was approved by CEN as a European Standard without any rnodification.

NOTE: Normative references to international publications are listed in annex ZA (normative).

lntroduction

This International Standard defines the Parameters characterizing the joint preparation and the collection of well-experienced values and shapes representing more design limits than manufacturing limits.

The requirements given in this International Standard have been com- piled on the basis of experience, and contain dimensions for types of joint preparation that are generally found to provide suitable welding conditions. However, the extended field of application makes it necess- ary to give a range of dimensions. The dimension ranges specified rep- resent design limits and are not tolerances for manufacturing purposes. Manufacturitlg limits depend, for instance, on welding process, parent metal, welding Position, quality level, etc. Therefore, the requirements given are more a recommendation than a specification. Because of the conimon character of this International Standard, the examples given cannot be regarded as the only Solution for the selection of a joint type.

Specific fields of application and manufacturing requiretnents (e.g. Pipeline construction) may be covered by selected ranges specified in other Standards adapted from this basic International Standard.

1 Scope

This International Standard pertains to types of joint preparation for metal-arc welding with covered electrode. gas-shielded metal-arc weldiny and gas welding on steel (See clauses 3 and 4).

It applies lo joint preparation for fully-penetrated butt welds, except in the case of some rec- ornrnended types of joint preparation (reference numbers 3 10A. 3.106 and 4.10.10Cj: if a butt weld is not possible or necessary. Special arrangenients need to be made. For not-fully-penetraled butt welds. types of joint preparation and dimensions differing from those specified in this Iniernational Standard may be stipulated.

The r o d yaps referred to in this International Stan- dard are thcxx gaps presented after tack welding. i f used.

Consideration should be given to alterlng the joint preparation details (where appropriate) to facilitate ternporary backing, "one-sided welding", etc.

2 Normative referenccs

The following Standards contain Provisions which, through reference in this text. constitute Provisions of this International Standard. At the time of publi- cation, the editions indicated were valid. All stan- dards are subjecl to revision, and parties to agreements based on this International Standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of ap- plying the most recent editions of the Standards in- dicated below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers of currently valid International Standards

3 Materials

Joint preparations recomrnentfed in this Inter- national Standard are suitable for all kinds of steel.

Page 3 EN 29 692 : 1994

4 Welding processes

Joint preparations recommended in this Inter- national Standard are slritable for welding carried out in accordance with the following prooesses as specified in tables 1 to 4; combinations of different processes are possible:

a) (3) gas welding; fuel gas welding.

b) (111) metal-arc welding with covered electrode; (manual rnetal-arc welding); shielded metal-arc welding.

C) (13) gas-shielded metal-arc welding; gas metal- arc welding:

- (131) melal-arc inert gas welding: MIG weld- ing;

--- (135) metal-arc active gas welding; MAG welding.

d) (141) tungsten inert gas welding; TIG welding; gas turlgsten arc welding.

NOTE I The numbers in parentheses refer to the refer- ence nulnber of the welding process specified in ISO 4063.

5 Finish

The longitudinal edges of the root face should be de-burred and may be chamfered (up to 2 mm).

6 Type of joint preparation

The reconimended types of joint preparation and dimensions are specified in tables 1 t o 4.

NOTE 2 The reference nunrbers have been deterrnined in accordance with the following scheme:

The first digit corresponds to the number of the table, the second digit or numerical group corresponds to the num- ber in ISO 2553, the thircl indication, expressed by a letter, considers variants of joint preparation.
